I was contacted by Lionel as part of a book project on the carnival Louviere, which will be published by the company Gilles traders, plus a photo book, a book that finally something composed of large images with a small line for the image caption.

We had 6 photographers working on the story, I was the only foreigner in folklore, one reason among others why I had been chosen: the advantage of being outside is that we have a "candid" look at folklore. In addition, in a city where almost everyone knows, it's my city I would have risked to spend more time talking with the people that make images: there was not the case. In my case, I know nobody has to spend more time with a box in hand a glass of beer (hey, that's an image I do not like beer).

The carnival Louviere is less well known than Binche (which makes it part of the heritage of UNESCO). In my head philistine, it was only the Gilles in Binche, La Louviere has its Gilles and folklore of its own, including the "brulage bump" which symbolizes the arrival of spring (cf. the picture of the gentleman straw burning).

If you want to know more about the folklore carnival Louviere

I was there on Monday and Tuesday, two days to follow Gilles, each photographer had his "mission statement" (aerial photo balloon, group photos, photo of a boat, etc.).
I was over there in freestyle with the goal of returning to the atmosphere and get the human contact, taking pictures of pretty simple stuff but get to the point, have images that tell something

I followed Gilles during collection. Basically, Gilles Gilles will seek other from house to house each with a champagne stop - quite an interesting experience, we enter the world of people, it spends its time refuse champagne at 9:00 in the morning to then move on to another house and so on ... It is very user friendly and even without alcohol, people are really open and welcoming!

Technical radius as usual as fixed, I would have liked the 24 1.4 but it was not available, so a Nikon D3, a 14mm2.8 a 35 F2, a 50mm1.4 and 85mm1
4 all in a small bag Domke F6.

For now, I made a selection of images "hot" right after the carnival, which will be refined to the book: I mean it's not necessarily that they appear, I still a lot more and I have to choose ...

Lionel kindly hosted me for the occasion which saved me go back at odd hours. I am now waiting to see the work of other photographers for the book is in the hands of those responsible for the editing, I'm curious to see the "finished product". There will also be a photo exhibition at the book's release.

The book " The Louvièrois Laetare "will be available in late October 2010 and is available for pre-order

    Great ...
And D3 did not suffer too much with all the shaving cream, confetti and more ...?

  10. Victor Says:

As usual, superb quality photos ...
Looks like you used more objo wide angle than usual, but hey it may be an impression.

I love how you followed the "Gilles", it really report. That said, I rather regret that there have not more photo service.

Ps: happy birthday (I saw that on your facebook page, but I'm not sure it's true!)

  11. Alexander Yagoubi Idrissi Says:

    Really super Super Clean Photos
    As usual nan? :)

  12. sab's Says:

superb, the atmosphere is made, the photos are beautiful. I take this opportunity to put in the spotlight too quickly disappeared exceptional photographer, who particularly fond of the carnival. Aurelie first carnival without you, too empty!

  13. alain Says:

it's been nice to see pictures! ;-)

plus c is the first time I see a Belgian "traditional" festival, and c is not for lack of in full view in Japan, I am surprised and impressed, ca al air very nice and c photography is well!

    at constructive feedback:
    - The color goes best synth subjects lend
    - Many pictures centric a shame imho
    - You often rest height man making certain not terrible background (heads of other people, crowd), or your best images (girl with umbrella etc.) are made by metant in diving, which can vary and unify the background, c is often what I do on festivals here (sometimes a little step stool 30cm completely change a series of photos on a parade)
    - Finally big favorite for the main image of the artcile, feet, quite the kind of evocative images that goes very well ;)

In any case, very nice report and the crossroads of vision 6 photographers should be very nice - beautiful project

    alain

  14. Pierre [Grapher & Co] Says:

Great photos, I love! : Razz:

Why are you past the color in NB?

I much prefer the photos of confetti and children. :-)

    Congratulations,

    Pierre

  15. MickymX Says:

    It's beautiful, it's clean, it's Ben ^ ^
Nice experience, I guess again. Thank you for sharing.
Informs us when the final support is over, that we are seen as the final porduit ^ ^ ^ (It's good a note)

  16. Alexandra Dupont Says:

Beautiful images that take us back in the Laetare 2010 was a great vintage! Thank you : Smile:

  17. Marc Says:

Superb images fully charged, good management of light, the images "tell" good event, a good emotion (special mention to Gille who closes his eyes!) For my part I do not find that the frames too focused are in most justified. That the kid looks at you with all the other looks that go up

  18. Lab-X Says:

An impressive brightness as usual. These photos are great and the plans very aesthetic feet.

  19. philippe Says:

    Magnificent!

As stated above, a beautiful rendering of the carnival of La Louviere!

    Ph.

nb: bright fixed focal! : Lol:

  20. Denis Says:

High class pictures that tell the emotion and the technical side is forgotten in favor of images, class!

  21. Fred Says:

Beautiful colors for images on a human scale.
    Great job, Ben.

  22. krysalia Says:

I love how you managed to capture the attention :) . Super!

  23. Guyhom Says:

    Mashed beautiful!
The book will be available from when?

  24. Delphine Says:

    Great mate!
    That boom?

  25. Twane Says:

    Very well done!
Following me right in the region and has a horror of carnival, I almost want to go!
I have two favorite pictures: The "959", the little girl sitting in the middle of confetti! A very humanistic photo, I love it. And the one with your article is "artistiquomarketinguement" perfect!
By cons, quick question ... I do not see a lot of strain on photos taken at 14mm. They recovered in post-production?

I want good information on the show too! It might be nice to see it on paper!

    Nice work!

  26. Matt Says:

    Hello ;-)
    A great photographic work :) I love

    Good luck.
    Matt

  27. the fireman louviere Says:

  29. Ben | Photob Says:

The grisha, Julian, Sebastian Santarelli, Pingui, Eskay, Pascal, Fred Bertrand, Alexandre Yagoubi Idrissi, sab's Alexandra Dupont, Marc, Lab-X, Philippe Denis, Fred, krysalia, Matt, fireman's louviere / / / / thank you!

    I answer more specific questions:

Dexter: On the report of this type, I adjust the contrast, white balance and sat in Capture One and I export for the web

Victor: Yes, I like more and more wide angle, it's a hot deal, but it says more to me :) I have pictures of the audience, but I focused on the selection gilles

alain: For B / W or color side, I think it is justified, but it is very personal and I understand your opinion :)

    - Yeah for centering, for me there are some images that need and others where I wanted to avoid too deformed UGA

    - For perspective, it is assumed, I like this room brothel, and hit a stepladder during a carnval you not stay there long hooked ;)

To agree on the choice of the image you are, it's pretty illustrative :)

Pierre [Grapher & Co]: In some cases I think it is justified, it is difficult to explain but I see some images a shooting in B / W and I work in this direction

    MickymX: Yep, it's expected!

    Guyhom: end of October

Delphine: Yaa! ca rolls, full of cool stuff, not enough time to post as usual ...

Twane: Nah, I just avoid too tapper my subjects in the corners ;)

  30. fred Says:

Via a very dear friend, I discovered these beautiful pictures ...

For 28 years I have not set foot in the carnival of La Louviere, and when I feel that the story comes to return ... but this is the true folklore ... the other is drinking and fight, the last image that sticks in my memory is the right of a jerk who happens fist on my face ... and then nothing ...
But frankly, what beautiful photos ..; beautiful light, beautiful color,
    beautiful snapshots ... magnifique.Merveilleux

  31. Stephane Says:

We learn to observe your bcp images, their composition, Exif, your technique, your tricks ...
    Thank you for that!

A question about this story: you use a single box? For COs used to see, you have to spend your time to change, is not it?

  32. lomoseb Says:

As usual, it's beautiful! The costumes are really interesting, not kitsch, great respect for the image.
I am anxious that you tell us a little more pictures of your slider input. The latter are really interesting.

  33. Didier Says:

Very nice work! I love it!

But ... how many arms / hands you have to manage one case and four primes .... I do not count the confetti! They are people too!

  34. Chris Says:

Very nice work. ! The treatment works well with suits.
I'm afraid to see how to present the forthcoming book, mixing different styles of photographers.
I hope it will be done tastefully.

It would be so + class with a single set ...

Thank you for sharing these pictures

  35. nathalie bonjean Says:

    Ma-gni-fic!!
The next year, too, I go to Binche .... but I bet the photos are Benjamin + beautiful than reality.

  36. JMB Says:

Great photojournalism! In particular, I appreciate the photos taken at the end of the day and night! Congratulations! Did you use a flash?
