Playground Shooting
June 17th, 2009

Quite different in terms of image post from the previous, some pictures and a short video to introduce the work done for the evening "playground" .
The goal was to have bright energetic enough pictures of youths who broke into an apartment with a small trash side, from there, I had carte blanche.
The shoot was well prepared with different clothes and accessories available which allowed us to quickly and easily choose according to those present.
Photographic side, work on this type of scene breaks me more full of super cool people and open, accessories, a suitable place, in short, a big sandbox to make images!

Technical level, 12/24 DX Tokina mounted on the D3 - to 20mm to avoid vignetting of the big focal sensors adapted to APSC.
Lighting level, the goal was to have made very close to the direct flash, so I worked with a single source (a beauty dish on a flash w 400) for a hard, high contrast light.
For some views made in Mirano, I worked with Orbis ring flash which produces a rather harsh light and which made me seem particularly suited to this type of images.

I plan to do an article on Orbis to bring you more information on this product.
Level diaph torque / speed I used a screw lens F11 for most images at once to get a good dive and also because my flash does not have a generator that allows him to get a lot of power.
The advantage of working with a fairly powerful source is also able to ride in speed to freeze the motion which was helpful in most of these images.
To trigger the studio flash, I work primarily with cable: in this case, I worked on the basis of the output from my SB800 flash set to minimum, just enough to trigger without influence on the scene.
Image rendering is quite aggressive (it goes much better print) compared to what I usually do, but the goal was to let me go and do something very different.

The purpose of the images:
It is always good to work for interesting images, it's even better when they are used: in this case, a site that moves well ( http://www.myplay.be ), a series of flyers (with a super good impression and 3 liters of paint) a magazine and a poster campaign in the city.

I introduced since the last article a multiple choice poll for you to vote for the next article (available in the right column)
The article on the shooting play received the most votes among other topics, so I reintroduce a new multiple choice, you also have the option to enter your own topic, which is why I added "my post-treatment "in the poll following a request from a visitor on the subject.

Great job! I'm really a fan of this series
June 18th, 2009 at 12:14
The rendering is really nice
!
By cons I do not find the contrast if it lights. You sure your SB-800 does not fit at all into account in the light?
Last question, normally the shutter speed does not play in this style of photography, I have not really understood the phrase "can climb speed to freeze the movement." The flash of a torch studio is about 1/1000 sec. It was he who freezes the moment, not the shutter speed ...
Anyway, bravo!

all good as usual
June 18th, 2009 at 5:12
Personally, I love it!
Excellent work and then the video adds a really cool p'tit.
Respect ...
June 18th, 2009 at 6:51
I'm always much fan ....
The video is dynamic, it really gives a vision of your way to work. A good video is worth a thousand words!
Thank you for the post processing.
I must have missed something, I did not find where to vote.
Your photos are really great!
June 18th, 2009 at 6:54
Clap clap clap! It had to be a fun and realize the final product is very nice! keep doing!
June 18th, 2009 at 7:16
Excellent! Very nice series!
June 18th, 2009 at 7:25
Hat!
Beautiful, different, beautiful control, good management models.
On this one you score 1000 + points sir and you prove your good flexibility.
What a breath of fresh air in today's photographic landscape in Brussels ... motivating.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:06
Arf.
Yes, it is superb.
And it's a record that I like more. I will base my entire picture not work on direct flash but it's so "real" I think. No way to hide it "burns" (not in the sense overexposed) everything in its path.
And technically your show tears. Not to mention the famous making of which I concur, is also terrible!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:18
Excellent work ...
Good luck!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:36
Waaw (first word out of my mouth when I saw the first pictures lol)
Very different, yes, but you have provided!
Dynamic, a good atmosphere that emerges each spring personality! And lighting level, no need for more!
And as you said, the more they are used by the site + flyers (which unfortunately is not always the case)
Thank you for the videos and details that show us the back of your work
June 18th, 2009 at 8:40
Kudos to you, beautiful images, a perfect treatment, a real ambience, plus a poster campaign!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:47
Great series, famous compos! By cons I do not like the increased hyper side ... And oddly enough, the "myplay" site rendering is very different (well, more soft!) ...
Very nice the "Making Of" anyway!
June 18th, 2009 at 9:42
Wow! Pourier you tell us what brand of flash (400W) and the beauty dish you use?
It is very impressive!
June 18th, 2009 at 11:04
I love it! I feel very safe dave hill as to render your images!
June 18th, 2009 at 11:31
Your always interesting and explanatory notes making of!
Thank you very much for all the info!
By the way, a question: what is the music on your video?
Mercii!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:12
A bit like everyone: wow!
Really made the class, and actually super different from what you do usual!
At the record, I think we are in some ways rapporche a Dragan effect (in lighter anyway). You used some stages of this kind of post-processing?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:12
Ah yes! It is you could do a little "tutorial" how you do different effects portrait ... it will be superb!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:13
Sorry - I meant just a tutorial on the post-processing!
June 18th, 2009 at 6:52
Brilliant!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:57
My JAW is on the FLOOR!
Pure killer! What energy!
June 19th, 2009 at 24:19
CHOICE mate! (As told to share with us)
June 19th, 2009 at 1:42
Hey, I have a question ...
You had an "art director"? Or the concept and implementation is out of your head?
Cheers
June 19th, 2009 at 9:55
Great ben, as in the staging in rendering quality that fits perfectly to this type of event. The message is very good.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:14
I do not like everything, but there are still pearls. I do prefer the flash ring.
I will feel less comfortable in this type of picture.
Is it me or I saw "William Kayacan" in the video? There have helped you to shoot or he just asked?
Anyway nice to see you on different project and thank you for sharing all this with us

Greg: thank you!
Jean-Romain: Yes I am, the fact is that I am a little off with the images in LR leading
For the shutter speed, you're right speed does not play, in this case, I was not in the dark and especially my flash even set at the lowest running around F8 to 1/250
Neele: thanks
Fred: thank you!
Launie59: Yep, I intend to do many other
Yannig: Oué player very far
thank you!
Roro: Thanks!
FredP: The Landscape photography is alive and well

Christophe: Yep, I'm starting to really love this harsh light
Pol, Jonathan Nairne, nicolasb Thank you!
Twane: I agree with you for the great side accentuated, in fact it is very readable sharpenisé little while and it goes well in large
Dom: One thing at lightcubepro and noname bowl mount bowens
dine: Without the modest nickname we are still far
Pat ': a track of boys noise, I edit the name as soon as I deliver it
Mr. G was not
Tim: No vraiement, treatment clearly lacks finesse and working in wholesale LR I added fill light and clarity in PS and a little unsharp mask
Dom: Knowing that 95% of my images I just adjust my white balance, contrast my and my saturation that is not likely to be exciting
antwerpenR: Thanks Roger!
SOFA: Thanks!
Delphine: Not really for AD which was setup and attitude, it's a group effort between Orgasms, people present, the short DJs well and good fun mess!
Dati: Thanks! to the side at home I discovered
June 19th, 2009 at 4:05
Chapi hat! Good series yet it is punchy. By cons I would love to live in Brussels to see a larger and therefore less contrasted hair. For treatment, you still have the good taste not to switch to the dark side
June 21st, 2009 at 9:09
Hello
Can you explain how you develop to get a comprehensive report saturated (including red clothes) with skins that are neutral (no red or mag excess).
June 21st, 2009 at 2:07
It is designed for Lighcubepro. Alien Bees rapporteurs at a much better value for money and all full of cheap accessories!. http://www.alienbees.com/b400.html
to lower the flash output, you could also use a gelatin ND FLASH. but hey, still an additional purchase

Congratulations for rendering is superb. What is your post-treatment above? you can answer me by mail.
and between flash and ring bowl beautiful rendering is quite similar right?
June 21st, 2009 at 2:52
Then I'm glued! What a great job, what great staging! BRVO and bottom caps.
Good luck
June 21st, 2009 at 8:10
Thank you very much for your response, I found the track on the band's MySpace, it is "Jeffer"
June 24th, 2009 at 1:24
You must fase courses Ben - I do not know how you do!
The thing that empresione me most is how you took pictures as NET! All the portraits, even in concert, are incroiablement NET - surtot portraits & people's eyes ... I try but they are never as clear as yours!
Congratulations again! I hope you continue your site.
June 25th, 2009 at 7:22
Hello Ben,
Congratulations for this series! I "Fan"!
One might think that you had a stroke Photomatix_Pro because rendering is very similar to HDR ....
I have a question! : How fast you shot the photos movements? (You must be a basic priority opening! That's it?)
Thank you for your answers and again Congratulations!
Yves
June 28th, 2009 at 12:24
Hi Yves,
it has nothing to do with franchment rendering HDR kitch ...
This report is the use of a flash without diffuser (like a softbox for example), a flash, whatever they may be, of sufficient power on which is placed a bowl, see possibly with cuts and so it flows rendering is hard extrêmemment is a flood light, extremely direct illumination ... This is how a report of this type is possible.
Looking at these pictures, we can perceive a movement is not completely fixed, it is not beyond the probabelemnt main 1/250eme.le interested you say well,
Synchroflash leveled to the max 250 th ... Beyond the flash trigger when the curtain is already close, which will cause large slices (vericales) black in the picture, unless you use the high-speed sync, and then it will be possible to obtain movements completely frozen.
June 28th, 2009 at 12:57
For this power problem is annoying, especially if sufficient distance from sources decline is not enough ...
Personally, what I do in my case, it is used as a kind of economic neon pilot lamp bulbs, halogen plutôte that ... It's still the flash gives the necessary illumination so if the neon lights a little less it has two advantages: the first, low power consumption, the second as it heats almost not you just cover the bowl of paper without the risk of fire ... it just reduces the power of the flash and it is very convenient ...
June 28th, 2009 at 6:20
@ M2
Hello,
Thank you very much for your answers and comments, I understood for speed, because only a few Cobra coupled with some boxes like NIKON eg; know manage over 1/250, thanks to the option that raises auto_FP a 1/320 memory ... by Nikon CLS ....
For rendering HDR oki ... but not flash effect ... thank you for the info's ....
Good WE

Indeed it changes what you do with usual but it's still at the top and super friendly atmosphere and technical level.
Which photo you have used the Orbis.
J really hesitate to buy this product because when you see on their website it looks like.

Hello,
We'll see you in different items with different type of gear.
You provided according to your orders and then you buy such a "beauty dish" and before you try it yourself?
What motivates a new purchase gear in short level?
See you

So there hat, I spend time on this site to see your new photos and I'm on the ass, so I am bound to leave a mark and say your pictures are stunning!
July 8th, 2009 at 7:31
Hello Ben,
It is this light that gives this rendering "bronze" (not tanned) on the skin?
It's crazy that! I still have work lighting issue! There's something to work again!
Thank you

July 13th, 2009 at 4:28
Again great job!
We feel the ring ... what a contrast!
Congratulations!
July 17th, 2009 at 2:22
it will do more than an hour I discovered your blog and I find it great. Personally I'm just getting started in photography and I love all your songs. I love your use of lighting.
Voilas you doing now left of my shortcuts.
I would regularly, I think.
Good evening and good night, it is already late-_-

August 7th, 2009 at 4:32
Hello,
First of all congratulations! Once again your work is stunning and this photo series could very well find a pub to illustrate fashion.
Otherwise, just a question that has nothing to do with this series but with the site: I love your new blog which is designed WORDPRESS I think. For the dressing you have recovered a theme or did you create from A to Z. I especially love the picture frames a round edge.
Finally, the last thing you indicate me your usual post processing is to edit the BDB and push the contrast. This is also true for this series?
Fab
Ps: Keep it up!
PS2: In fact the video tutorial you preach us with your mini camera?? -))
August 16th, 2009 at 9:47
Hi Ben!
Great job you just do it again! It's really great fun!
I saw you talking about the Orbis, I just wanted one of your impressions, because I'm on the verge of ordering one!
Great report!

I love all the "madness" that these pictures convey! *
November 8th, 2009 at 11:23
Hello,
Very nice series bravo!
For cons, I am against to sell to readers that there was no obvious work Prod post after the shooting, it's great working with the application of some preset in LRII or Tshop, regardless of the series is great! but do not say I made a shot and balance Bl 3 X anything in LR is necessary, there is a lot of work, it's great and we re_demande! but will post prod behind .... we do not want to swing on a blog its little secrets = normal! no worries! but should not say there is nothing done when there is a big job behind, which is a Photographer's honor!
Good to you and thank you for this great series!

November 10th, 2009 at 5:23
Bonour everybody,
I posted two days ago thanks for the great job, and my comments on the post-processing "OBVIOUS" of this series!
I just noticed that my post has been deleted! and is this very attitude "small" pretending to readers that there is only one cutting Balance BL + a tad adjusted in contrast LRII!
I simply referred to the fact that at the opposite of what we say friend "BEN" there big job post processing behind this series with the application of several preset either LR or Photoshop and that it is not that simple is the contrast settings of clarity or contrast!
At the same time it is not serious to say! On the contrary, the series is great!
But do not swallow the reader that there is not a BIG job processing from behind!
Now you can erase my post again! and in which case if you do, it is that my words are true and that this affects you! if not you justifiriez!
pending the erasure of my post, there will be at least 10/20 that read my comments
Sincerely yours,
Tony
November 11th, 2009 at 9:40
tony: On the blog I publish all the comments, everyone is entitled to his opinion, the fact is that for reasons of spam comments I validate manually before publication, I am reporting to Bali with limited access to net, so no stress
For the rest, I'm pretty bad postprocessing (confirm some ...) I'm not really able to work behind the GROS
I have no huge problem to explain what I do behind my images, I find unfortunate is that many think that the job is done after, I personally prefer to be closer to my final result has the pdv
On my return, I'll post one or two pictures to explain what I do (basically, white balance, contrast, saturation, and some shadow / high light and increased contrast
November 16th, 2009 at 8:43
Hi, Well, first of all I congratulate you for this series demonstrates a mastery both artistically and technically.
I think tony judge your work a little easier. In fact, I do not see how the fact to adjust its development parameters (yes, this is called development and not editing) a RAW file is similar to "wholesale reworking ". In this case, the mere use of "picture styles" or other presets the camera would be editing.
Today, many photographers bossent with RAW and this requires an adjustment accordingly because the image that comes out of the sensor still lacks a bit of sharpness, contrast, and a "fine tuning" of the white balance. This is why software such as Lightroom, Capture one, dpp, etc.. have become essential for any photographer require. It is also catching up on that little "errors" of exposure or white balance, but I do not call that editing.
Free to everyone to think what he wants, but I think the "big job" was to ensure to have beautiful frames (despite the movement), adjust the flash to properly expose the subject, to play on the CDP ...
Keep up the good work
Ben G.
November 18th, 2009 at 7:27
Tony Criticism is easy but art is difficult!
If you followed Benjamin for a while this is not the first time he explains his work, the development of RAW is required as the file type is gross. And how you will develop your own style to create, what style is found in Benjamin found in these works.
Before you ignite and criticize everything goes ("I am against to sell to readers that there was no obvious work Prod post after the shooting") with a background of paranoid, try to know a little about.
November 18th, 2009 at 3:54
I also think that Tony did not touch one, and he does not even understand how he could "" one day to such a resulting output.
I read this blog for years, I can only thank Ben for us to share his knowledge. It makes me want to take photos.
November 18th, 2009 at 5:49
I think you're going a little fast Tony.
What I see in this series, more than the post treatment, it is a perfect mastery of light. Ben we long to show that the basis of his work is light, not hours behind photoshop.
In any case, given the amount of product image Ben, I do not see how he could go after PS for ages.
Congratulations again for this series
It's nice to hear from you Ben, I was just wondering if you gave up the blog ...
Waiting to see your next posts, bon voyage.

@ Ben
Thank you very much for your answer ...
Waiting for your return ...
@ Arnaud
You're a nice guy, but as a Redac_Chf Fashion mag, I think I know "partfaitement topic! So there is no paranoid! but some 20 years of experience! you can say the same? more I congratulated BEN for this series which is TOP and away from any cirtique month when the series was "The Same" or a mastery of lighting ... and everything else, the shooting is the best!
But I still say that there was a job post after Prod (and important)! and the shoot are not posted raw sensor ...
But I expect explanations when Ben has his process DVLP RAW ....
Wait & See ...
Regards,
Tony

I just reread me (there are ugly mistakes), I have no possibility to 2dition j'2cris from my iPhone ... you can fix please .... thank you .... Tony
November 24th, 2009 at 9:58
@ Tony:
"But I still say that there was a job post after Prod (and important)! and the shoot are not posted raw sensor ... "
Raw sensor, probably not (and even less about this series "pepsée" for style) but try a photo with a light Gerée (!), Contrast and saturation adjustments and you have your work post production '. . It does not need each time through photoshop either ...

Let's say 95% of my images is C1 and export for the web, in this case for the record that I was looking for I wanted to push a bit more, so basically in LR is a little DLSE, the fill light and retrieving HL.
Which basically take 20 seconds to do on an image and then paste it on the other I personally call it the RAW development and no editing each now has its vocabulary
January 7th, 2010 at 4:28
Hi!
Small question in passing, that I have never used or C1 or LR, what is the difference? one is it more suitable for some edits the other and vice versa?

Will there be one day see a raw and retouched picture difference?
Congratulations for the photos they are very nice .. It changes a little and it's still great!
