Playground Shooting
June 17th, 2009

A post quite different in terms of image compared to the previous few pictures and a short video to showcase the work done for the evening "playground" .
The goal was to have strong enough pictures, bright young people enjoying themselves in an apartment with a small trash style, from there, I had carte blanche.
The shooting was well prepared with different clothes and accessories available which allowed us to select easily and quickly according to those present.
Side photographic work on this type of scene'm having more and more full of awesome folks and open, accessories, a suitable place in short a big sandbox for making images!

Technical level, 12/24 Tokina DX mounted on the D3 - 20mm to avoid vignetting the bulk of the focal sensors adapted to APSC.
Lighting level, the goal was to have made a very close direct flash, so I worked with a single source (a bowl on a beauty flash 400W) for a hard light-contrasted.
For some images taken at the Mirano, I worked with Orbis ring flash produces a light and tough enough with rendering seemed particularly suited to this type of imagery.

I plan to do an article on the Orbis to bring you more information about this product.
Level diaph torque / speed I used a screw to F11 goal for most images at once to get a good dive and also because my flash does not have a generator that allows him to get much power.
The advantage of working with a sufficiently powerful source of power is also speed up to freeze the movement which was useful in most of these images.
The triggering of studio flash, I work with a cable: in this case, I worked on the basis of light emitted by my SB800 set to minimum, just enough to trigger no influence on the scene.
Rendering of images is fairly aggressive (it spends a lot better in print) compared to what I normally do, but the goal was to let me go and do something very different.

The purpose of images:
It's always good to work for interesting images, it's even better when they are used: in this case, a site that moves well ( http://www.myplay.be ), a series of flyers (with a really good impression and 3 liters of varnish) a magazine and a poster campaign in the city.

Vote!
I introduced since the last article, a multiple choice survey that allows you to vote for next issue (available in the right hand column)
The article on the shooting play has received the most votes among the other subjects, so I reintroduced a new multiple choice, you can also insert your own subject, which is why I added "my post-treatment "in the poll after a request from a visitor on the subject.

Great job! I'm really a fan of this series
June 18th, 2009 at 12:14
The rendering is really nice
!
By cons I found no lighting so that it contrasts. Are you sure your SB-800 does not enter at all into account in the light?
Last quick question, usually the shutter speed does not play in this style of photo, I did not really understand the phrase "can climb speed to freeze movement. The flash of a torch studio takes about 1 / 1000 sec. He that freezes the moment, not the shutter speed ...
Anyway, congratulations!
JR.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:36
all good as usual
June 18th, 2009 at 5:12
Perso, j'adore!
Great work and then the video adds a little more cool.
Respect ...
June 18th, 2009 at 6:51
I'm still as much a fan ....
The video is dynamic, it really gives a vision of the way you work. A good video is worth a thousand words!
Thank you for the post treatment.
I had to miss a thing, I do not find where to vote.
Your photos are really top!
June 18th, 2009 at 6:54
Slap Clap Clap! It had to be fun to achieve and the final product is very nice! keep doing!
June 18th, 2009 at 7:16
Excellent! Very beautiful series!
June 18th, 2009 at 7:25
Chapeau!
Beautiful, different, great control, good management models.
On this one you score 1000 points and mister you prove your good flexibility.
What a breath of fresh air in the current landscape photography in Brussels ... motivating.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:06
Arf.
Yes, that's great.
And it's a record that I like more. I will base my work not the whole picture direct flash but it's so "real" I think. No way to hide, it "burns" (not in the sense overex) everything in its path.
And technically your serial tears. Not to mention those famous making of which, I confirm, are also terrible!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:18
Excellent work ...
Good work!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:36
Waaw (first word out of my mouth when I saw the first picture lol)
Very different yes, but you covered!
Dynamics, a good atmosphere that surrounds it, each personality is apparent! And lighting level, not need more!
And as you said they are increasingly used by the site + flyers (which is unfortunately not always the case)
Thank you for the videos and details that show us the back of your work
June 18th, 2009 at 8:40
Bravo to you, great pictures, perfect processing, a real atmosphere, plus a poster campaign!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:47
Very good series, famous compositions! By cons I like less pronounced hyper side ... And oddly enough, on the site "MyPlay", rendering is very different (well, more soft!) ...
Very cool the "Making Of" in any case!
June 18th, 2009 at 9:42
Wow Pourier you tell us what brand of flash (400W) and the beautiful bowl you use?
It is very impressive!
June 18th, 2009 at 11:04
love! I feel very safe dave hill as to render your pictures!
June 18th, 2009 at 11:31
Always very interesting and explanatory notes your making of!
Thank you very much for all the info!
Incidentally, a question: what is the music on your video?
Mercii!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:12
Just like everyone: wow!
Really made the class, and actually super different from what you do inh!
At the record, I think we will bring closer in some ways an effect Dragan (in lighter anyway). You have used some steps of this kind of post-processing?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:12
Oh yes! That you could make a quick tutorial how you make different effects of portrait ... it will be superb!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:13
Sorry - I meant just a tutorial on the post-processing!
June 18th, 2009 at 6:52
Brilliant!

My Jaw Is On the FLOOR!
A pure killer! What energy!
June 19th, 2009 at 12:19
CHOICE mate! (As told to share with us)
June 19th, 2009 at 1:42
Hey, I have a question ...
You had an "art director"? Or the concept and implementation is out of your head?
Cheers
June 19th, 2009 at 9:55
Superb well, both in staging and in the rendering quality that fits perfectly to this kind of event. The message is very good.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:14
I do not like everything, but there are still pearls. I prefer the one made ring flash.
I feel less comfortable in this type of photo.
Is it me or I saw "William Kayacan" in the video? It helped to have you shoot or he just asked for?
Anyway nice to see you on different project and thank you for sharing all this with us

Greg: thank you!
Jean-Romain: Yes I am, the fact is that I just typed in the resulting images in LR
For shutter speed, you're right speed does not play, in this case, I was not in the dark and especially my flash even set to lowest is around for a F8 1 / 250
Neele: thanks
Fred: thank you!
Launie59: Yep, I too will be many other
Yannig: Yeah reader very far
thank you!
Roro: Thanks!
Fredp: The landscape photography is alive and well
but they bossent not play a post on a blog
Christophe: Yep, I'm starting to like this has hard light
Pol Jonathan Naime, nicolasb: Thanks!
Twan I'll join you for the next super stressed, in fact it is very difficult to read small sharpenisé all goes well and that large
Dom: A trick with a bowl and lightcubepro noname in Bowens mount
Deen: Not to the pseudo modest we are still far
Pat ': A boys track of noise, I edit as soon as I return the name on
Mr G was not
Tim: Not really, the treatment clearly lacks finesse and work in essentially LR, I added the fill light and clarity and in PS a little unsharp mask
Dom: Given that 95% of my pictures I am happy to adjust my white balance, contrast and my my saturation this would not be exciting
antwerpenR: Thanks Roger!
sofa: Thanks!
delphine: Not really in terms of AD was setup and attitude is a group effort between Orga, people present, although the DJ briefly brothel and much fun!
Dati: Thanks! to the side at home I discovered
June 19th, 2009 at 4:05
Chap hat! Good series is still well Péchu. By cons I will like to live in Brussels to see them larger and therefore a bit less contrast. For treatment, you always have the good taste not to switch from the dark side
June 21st, 2009 at 9:09
Hello
Can you explain how you develop an overall result for saturated (red including clothing) with skins that are neutral (not too red or mag).
June 21st, 2009 at 2:07
Too bad for Lighcubepro. Alien Bees to a much better rapporteurs money and lots of accessories Cheap!. http://www.alienbees.com/b400.html
to lower the flash power, you could also use a gelatin ND FOR FLASH. but hey, still an additional purchase

Bravo for the rendering is superb. what is your post-processing on it? you can answer me by mail.
and between ring flash and bowl of beauty rendering is pretty similar right?
June 21st, 2009 at 2:52
So here I am stuck on! What a great job, what great staging! Brvo and hats off.
Bonne continuation
June 21st, 2009 at 8:10
Thank you very much for your answer, I found the track on the band's MySpace, it is "Jefferson"
June 24th, 2009 at 1:24
You must fase course Ben - I do not know how you did!
The thing that m'empresione most is how you took pictures NET also! All portraits, even in concert, are incredibly NET - surtot portraits & people's eyes ... I try but I never as clear as yours!
Well done! I hope you continue your site.
June 25th, 2009 at 7:22
Hello Ben
Congratulations on this series! I am a "Fan"!
One might think that you had a stroke because Photomatix_Pro rendering is really similar to HDR ....
I have a question! : At what speed you shot the photos in motion? (You must be a basic Priority opening! Is this?)
Thank you for your responses and again Congratulations!
Yves
June 28th, 2009 at 12:24
Hi Yves,
it has nothing to do with franchment kitsch rendering of HDR ...
This report is the use of a flash without diffusor (a softbox for example), a flash, whatever they be, with sufficient capacity on which sits a bowl, see possibly with cuts flows and therefore it gives a rendering extremely hard, it's a harsh light, a light extremely direct ... This is how a record of this type is possible.
Looking at these pictures, we can perceive a movement is not totally frozen, it is not beyond the probabelemnt 1/250eme.le main person will tell you well
The synchroflash leveled off at 250 th Max ... Beyond the flash trigger when the curtain is already closing, which will cause large slices (vericales) black on the picture, unless you use the high speed sync, and there it will be possible to obtain movements completely frozen.
June 28th, 2009 at 12:57
For this problem of power is boring, especially if a sufficient basis for the removal of sources is not enough ...
Personally, what I do in my case, use bulbs neon lamp as an economic driver rather than halogen ... It still gives the flash illumination so necessary if the neon lights up a little less it has two advantages: the first, low power consumption, the second as it heats almost not you just cover the bowl of paper without the risk of fire ... it reduces somewhat the power of flash and is very practical ...
June 28th, 2009 at 6:20
@ M2
Welcome
Thank you very much for your responses and comments, I understand the speed, in fact, only a few Cobra coupled with some boxes like NIKON eg; know manage over 1 / 250 thanks to the option that raises auto_FP was 1 / 320 memory by Nikon CLS ... ....
For the record ... not oki HDR flash effect ... but thank you for the info's ....
Good weekend

Yves if you're a fan of flashy shooting studio, and you probably know David LaChapelle, if you know it, you'll love surra!

In effect it changes what you do with habit but it's still nice and super top-level environment and technology.
On what camera did you use the Orbis.
I really hesitated to buy this product because when you see on their site makes me want it.

Hello,
We see you in different sections with different types of gear.
You provided according to your commands or when you buy such a "beauty bowl" before and you t'essaye above?
What motivates a new purchase gear at all? "
See you

So this hat, I spend time to time on this site to see your new photos and I'm on the ass of the sudden I'm leaving a trace and say that your pictures are superb!
July 8th, 2009 at 7:31
Hello Ben
It is this light that gives this rendering "Bronze" (not tanned) on the skin?
It's crazy that! I still question the work light! There's something to work again!
Thank you
Caromel
July 13th, 2009 at 4:28
Again great work!
We can see the ring ... what a contrast!
Congratulations
July 17th, 2009 at 2:22
it will be more than an hour I discovered your blog and I find great. Personally I'm just starting in photography and I love all your compositions. I love your lighting effects.
Here you do now left my shortcuts.
I would come back regularly, I think.
Good evening and good night, it is already late-_-

August 7th, 2009 at 4:32
Hello,
First of all congratulations! Once again your work is brilliant and this series of photo could very well end up to illustrate a pub fashion.
Otherwise, just a question that has nothing to do with this series but with the site: I love your new blog which is performed under WORDPRESS I think. For the dressing you have a recuperative theme or did you create from A to Z. I love picture frames including a round edge.
Lastly, the last thing you to tell me that your usual post processing is to alter the BDB and push the contrast medium. Is this also true for this series?
Fab
Ps: Keep it!
PS2: Actually the video tutorial that you told us with your mini camera??? -))
August 16th, 2009 at 9:47
Hi Ben!
Great job that you just do it again! It's really super nice!
I saw that you spoke of Orbis, I just wanted one of your impressions, because I'm about to ordered 1!
Super review!

I love all the "madness" that these photos convey! *
Nov. 8th, 2009 at 11:23
Hello,
Very nice series bravo!
For cons, I am against the idea to swallow the reader that there was not a clear post prod work after the shooting, it's great working with the application of some preset in LRII Tshop or may important the series is great! but do not say I made a sudden balance of BI and anything under 3 X RS, it is there for a job, this is good and we re_demande! But there behind the post production .... we do not want to swing on a Blog's little secrets = normal! no worries! but there must not say anything when there is a big job behind, which is has the honor of Photographer!
Sincerely yours and thank you for this wonderful series!

November 10th, 2009 at 5:23
Bonour everybody,
I posted two days ago thanks for this great job, and my comments on the post processing "OBVIOUS" of this series!
I just noticed that my post has been deleted! and this attitude is very "small" by readers to believe that there is a balance of cutting BL + a tad of contrast adjusted under LRII!
I merely mentioned the fact that as the opposite of what we say friend "Ben" there great work of post processing behind this series with the application of several preset either LR or Photoshop and that it is not the only simple contrast settings of clarity and contrast!
At the same time it is okay to say it! the contrary, the series is great!
But do not swallow the reader that there is a BIG no treatment work behind!
Now you can erase my post again! and if so if you do, it is that my words are true and that it affects you! if not you are justified!
until the erasure of my post, there will be at least 10/20 who read my reviews
Sincerely yours,
Tony
November 11th, 2009 at 9:40
tony: I post on the blog all the comments, everyone has the right to his opinion, the point is that for reasons of spam I run the manual reviews before publication, I am on assignment in Bali with limited access to Net, so no stress
For the rest, I'm pretty bad in postprocessing (some confirm ...) I'm not too capable of doing work behind WHOLESALE
I was suffering any problem explaining what I do behind my images, what I find unfortunate is that many believe that after the job is done, personally I prefer to be closer to my end result was the pdv
On my return, I'll post one or two pictures to explain what I did (basically, white balance, contrast, saturation, and some shadow / light and high contrast enhancement
November 16th, 2009 at 8:43
Hello, Well, first of all I want to congratulate you for this series which shows a mastery both artistically and technically.
I think tony judge your work a little easier. In fact, I do not see how the fact adjust its parameters for development (and yes, it is called development, not editing) a RAW file is similar to "wholesale rework . In this case, the mere use of the "Picture Style" or other auto his camera would retouching.
Today, many photographers bossent with RAW and it requires an appropriate adjustment for the image that comes out of the sensor is still missing a bit of sharpness, contrast, and a "fine tuning" of the white balance. It is for this reason that software such as Lightroom, Capture One, dpp, etc.. have become essential for any photographer requires. It's also catching on that little "errors" of exposure or white balance, but I do not call it retouching.
Free for everyone to think what he wants, but I think the "big job" was to ensure having beautiful frames (despite the movement), adjust the flash to properly expose the topic of the pdc play ...
Keep up the good work
Ben G.
November 18th, 2009 at 7:27
Tony Criticism is easy but the art is hard!
If you followed her youngest for a while this is not the first time he explains his work, the development of RAW is mandatory as this type of file is gross. And the way you develop will create your own style, the style found among the youngest found in various works.
Before ignite and criticize everything goes ("I am against the idea to swallow the reader that there was not a clear post prod work after the shooting) with an underlying paranoid, trying to know something about the subject.
November 18th, 2009 at 3:54
I also think that Tony did not hit one, and he does not even understand how he could "happen one day such a resulting output.
I read this blog for years, I can only thank Ben for us to share his knowledge. It makes me want to take photos.
November 18th, 2009 5:49 Has
I think you're going a little fast Tony.
What I see in this series, more than the post treatment is a perfect mastery of light. Ben will be showing for years that the basis of his work is light, and not hours behind Photoshop.
Anyway, given the quantity of product image that Ben, I do not see how he could harp on for ages PS.
Congratulations again for this series
It's nice to hear from you Ben, I was wondering if you should abandon the blog ...
Waiting to see your next posts, bon voyage.

@ Ben
Thank you very much for your answer ...
While awaiting your return ...
@ Arnaud
You're nice, but as a Redac_Chf Fashion mag, I think I know "partfaitement topic! so there is no paranoid! but some 20 years of experience! you can say that? more I congratulated Ben for this series is far from TOP and any cirtique months when the series was "The Same" nor has the mastery of lighting ... and everything else, the shooting is great!
But I still say that there was a work of post prod after (and important)! and the shot are not posted gross sensor ...
But I'm waiting for explanations when Ben has his process DVLP RAW ....
Wait & See ...
Regards,
Tony

I've just read (there are some weird errors), I have no possibility of 2dition j'2cris from my iPhone ... can you please correct it. ... Thank you .... Tony
November 24th, 2009 at 9:58
@ Tony:
"But I still say that there was a post prod work after (and important)! and the shot are not posted gross sensor ... "
Gross sensor, probably not (and even less about this series pepsée "for style) but gives us a picture with a light run (!!), contrast and saturation adjustments and you have your working post production." . Do not go through every time photoshop either ...

November 24th, 2009 at 1:25
Let's say for 95% of my images is C1 and export for the web, in this case for the record that I wanted I wanted to push a bit more, so basically in LR is a bit of DLSE, the fill light and the recovery of HL.
What that basically take 20 seconds to do an image and then paste it on other personally call it RAW development and no editing has now everyone's vocabulary
January 7th, 2010 at 4:28
Hello!
Small question by the way, I who have never used either C1 or LR, what is the difference? Is one more suited to certain adjustments than the other and vice versa?

Can t you see a difference one day gross and retouched photo?
Bravo for the photos they are very nice .. It changes a little and it's still good!
