Playground Shooting
June 17th, 2009

Post a quite different picture in terms of the previous, some pictures and a short video to present the work done for the evening "playground" .
The goal was to have images sufficiently energetic, bright young people who get a kick in an apartment with a small trash style, from there, I had carte blanche.
The shoot was well prepared with different clothes and accessories available which allowed us to select easily and quickly based on attendance.
Side photographic work on this type of scene'm having more and more full of awesome folks and open, accessories, a suitable place in short a big sandbox for making images!

Technical level, 12/24 DX Tokina mounted on the D3 - 20mm to avoid vignetting of the main focal adapted to the APSC sensor.
Lighting level, the primary goal was to have made a very close direct flash, so I worked with a single source (a bowl on a beauty flash 400 w) for a hard light and high contrast.
For some views conducted in Mirano, I worked with an Orbis ring flash light that produces a fairly hard and whose execution seemed particularly suited to this type of images.

I plan to do an article on Orbis to bring you more information about this product.
Diaph torque level / speed I used a threaded lens to F11 for most images at once to get a good dive and also because my flash does not have a generator that allows him to get much power.
The advantage of working with a source is also powerful enough to be able to upshift to freeze the movement which was helpful in most of these images.
To trigger the studio flash, I work with a cable: in this case, I worked on the basis of the flash emitted by my SB800 set to minimum, just enough to trigger no influence on the scene.
The image rendering is quite aggressive (it goes much better in print) from what I usually do, but the goal was to let go and do something very different.

The purpose of the images:
It's always good to work for interesting images, it's even better when they are used: in this case, a site that moves well ( http://www.myplay.be ), a series of flyers (with a great impression and 3 liters of paint) a magazine and a poster campaign in the city.
Thanks for their various contributions

I introduced since the last article a multiple choice poll allowing you to vote for the next article (available in the right column)
The article on the shooting play has received the most votes among the other subjects, so I reintroduce a new multiple choice, you can also introduce your own topic, why I added "my post-processing "in the poll after a request from a visitor on the subject.

Great job! I'm really a fan of this series
June 18th, 2009 at 12:14
The record is really nice
!
By cons I find the light if not contrasting it. You're on your SB-800 that would not fit at all into account in the light?
Quick question, normally the shutter speed is not playing in this style of picture, I do not really understand the phrase "you can upshift to freeze the movement." The flash of a torch studio is approximately 1/1000 sec. It was he who freezes the moment, not the shutter speed ...
Anyway, bravo!
JR.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:36
all good as usual
June 18th, 2009 at 5:12
Personally, I love it!
Great work and then the video adds a little extra cool.
Respect ...
June 18th, 2009 at 6:51
I'm still as much a fan ....
The video is dynamic, it really gives a vision of the way you work. A good video is worth a thousand words!
Thank you for the post processing.
I had to miss a trick, I did not find where to vote.
Your pictures are really great!
June 18th, 2009 at 6:54
Clap clap clap! It had to be fun to achieve, and the final product is very nice! keep doing!
June 18th, 2009 at 7:16
Excellent! Very nice set!
June 18th, 2009 at 7:25
Hat!
Beautiful, different, beautiful control, good management models.
On this one you score 1000 points mister and you prove your good flexibility.
What a breath of fresh air in the current landscape photography in Brussels ... motivating.
June 18th, 2009 at 8:06
Arf.
Yes, it is superb.
And that's a record that I love more. I will base my work not on the whole camera direct flash but it's so "real" I think. No way to hide, it "burns" (not in the way overexposed) everything in its path.
And technically set your tears. Not to mention those famous making-of that, I can confirm, are also terrible!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:18
Great job ...
Good luck!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:36
Waaw (the first word out of my mouth when I saw the first pictures lol)
Very different yes, but you covered!
Dynamic, a good atmosphere that comes out every spring personality! And lighting levels, not need more!
And as you said in addition they are well used by the site + flyers (which unfortunately is not always the case)
Thank you for the videos and details that make us look behind your work
June 18th, 2009 at 8:40
Kudos to you, beautiful images, a perfect treatment, a real atmosphere, and in addition a poster campaign!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:47
Very good series, famous compos! By cons I like less pronounced hyper side ... And oddly enough, on the site "myplay", the rendering is very different (well, more soft!) ...
Very nice "Making Of" anyway!
June 18th, 2009 at 9:42
Wow! Pourier you tell us what brand of flash (400W) beauty and bowl you use?
This is very impressive!
June 18th, 2009 at 11:04
I love it! I feel very strong at dave hill as to render your pictures!
June 18th, 2009 at 11:31
Always interesting and explanatory notes thy making of!
Thank you very much for all the info!
Incidentally, a question: what is the music on your video?
Mercii!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:12
A bit like everyone: wow!
Really made the class, and actually super different from what you do usual!
At the record, I think we are in some ways rapporche a Dragan effect (in lighter anyway). You used some steps of this kind of post-processing?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:12
Ah yes! It is you could do a little "tutorial" how you do different effects of portrait ... it will be superb!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:13
Sorry - I meant just a tutorial on the post-processing!
June 18th, 2009 at 6:52
Brilliant!
June 18th, 2009 at 8:57
My Jaw is on the FLOOR!
A pure killer! What energy!
June 19th, 2009 at 24:19
CHOICE mate! (As they say share with us)
June 19th, 2009 at 1:42
Hey, I have a question ...
You had an "art director"? Or the concept and implementation is out of your head?
Cheers
June 19th, 2009 at 9:55
Ben superb, both in staging and in the rendering quality that fits perfectly to this type of event. The message going very well.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:14
I do not like everything, but there are still pearls. I prefer the one made ring flash.
I feel less comfortable in this type of photo.
Is it me or I saw "William Kayacan" in the video? He will have helped to shoot and then just put it in?
Anyway nice to see you on various project and thank you again for sharing all this with us

Greg: thank you!
Jean-Romain: Yes I am on, the fact is I have a little Tappe in the images in LR leading
For shutter speed, you're right speed does not play, in this case, I was not in the dark and especially my flash even set to lowest is around the F8 1/250
Neele: thanks
Fred: thank you!
Launie59: Yep, I plan to do much other
Yannig: Yeah reader very far
thank you!
Roro: Thanks!
Fredp: The landscape photography is alive and well
but they bossent not play a post on a blog
Christophe: Yep, I begin to really love this light lasts
Pol, Jonathan Naime, nicolasb: Thank you!
Twane: I join you for the next super stressed, in fact it is very difficult to read in small sharpenisé everything goes well and that large
Dom: A trick in a bowl and lightcubepro noname frame in bowens
dine: Without the pseudo modest we are still far
Pat: a track of noise boys, I edit as soon as I shall provide the names above
Mr G was not
Tim: No Verily, the treatment is clearly lacking in finesse and work basically in LR, I added the fill light and clarity and in PS a little unsharp mask
Dom: Given that 95% of my images I just adjust my white balance, contrast, and my my saturation this would not be exciting
antwerpenR: Thanks Roger!
sofa: Thanks!
delphine: Not really in terms of AD was setup and attitude, it's a group effort between orgas, the crowd, the DJs well short brothel and well fun!
Dati: Thanks! to the side at home I discover
June 19th, 2009 at 4:05
Chapters hat! Good series that's still punchy. By cons I would love to live in Brussels to see them larger and therefore a bit less contrast. For treatment, you always have the good taste not to switch to the dark side
June 21st, 2009 at 9:09
Hello
Can you explain how you develop for a given total saturated (including red clothes) with skins that are neutral (not too red or mag).
June 21st, 2009 at 2:07
Too bad for Lighcubepro. Alien Bees to a much better price and quality rapporteurs all full of cheap accessories!. http://www.alienbees.com/b400.html
to lower the flash power, you could also use a ND FOR FLASH gelatin. but hey, even an additional purchase

Bravo for this rendering is superb. what is your post-processing on it? you can answer me by mail.
and between ring flash and bowl of beauty rendering is quite similar right?
June 21st, 2009 at 2:52
So there I taped! What a great job, what great staging! Brvo and hats off.
Good luck
June 21st, 2009 at 8:10
Thank you very much for your answer, I found the track on the band's MySpace, it's "Jefferson"
June 24th, 2009 at 1:24
You have to fase of course Ben - I do not know how you did!
The thing I empresione most is how you took pictures as NET! All portraits, even in concert, are incroiablement NET - surtot portraits & people's eyes ... I try but they are never as sharp as yours!
Bravo again! I hope you continue your site.
June 25th, 2009 at 7:22
Hello Ben,
Congratulations for this series! I am a "Fan"!
One might think that you spent a helping Photomatix_Pro because the rendering is very similar to HDR ....
I have a question! : A what speed you shot the pictures in motion? (You must be a priority basis in the opening! Is this?)
Thank you for your answers and again Bravo!
Yves
June 28th, 2009 at 12:24
Hi Yves,
it has nothing to do with franchment kitsch rendering of HDR ...
It is made of the use of a flash without diffuser (like a softbox for example), a flash, whatever they be, of sufficient power on which stands a bowl, possibly see with cuts and streams so that rendering is extrêmemment hard, it's a harsh light, an extremely direct light ... This is how a rendering of this type is possible.
Looking at these pictures, one can perceive a movement is not completely frozen, it is not beyond the probabelemnt 1/250eme.le main person will tell you well,
The maximum synchroflash leveled at 250 th ... Beyond the flash go off when the curtain is already close, which will cause large slices (vericales) black on the picture, unless you use the High-speed sync, and there it will be possible to obtain movements completely frozen.
June 28th, 2009 at 12:57
For this problem of power is boring, especially if a sufficient basis for the removal of sources is not enough ...
Personally, what I do in my case, is use of neon bulbs such as economic modeling lamp, halogen plutôte that ... It's still giving the flash illumination if necessary while the neon lights just under it has two advantages: the first, low power consumption, the second almost as it heats it, you just cover the bowl of paper without risk of fire ... it just reduces the flash output and is very convenient ...
June 28th, 2009 at 6:20
@ M2
Hello,
Thank you very much for your answers and comments, I understood for speed, in fact, only a few Cobra coupled with some boxes like the NIKON eg; know manage over 1/250 thanks to the option that raises auto_FP a 1/320 memory ... by Nikon CLS ....
For rendering HDR oki ... but not flash effect ... thank you for the info's ....
Good WE

Indeed it changes what you do with habit but it's still top and very friendly atmosphere and technical level.
On which photo you've used the Orbis.
J really hesitate to buy this product because when you see on their site makes me want it.

Hello,
We see you in different sections with different types of gear.
You provided according to your commands or else you buy for example a "beauty bowl" and before you try it?
What motivates a new purchase level stuff after all?!
See you

So there hat time I spend time on this site to see your new photos and I'm on your ass, suddenly I have to leave a mark and say your pictures are beautiful!
July 8th, 2009 at 7:31
Hello Ben,
It is this light that gives this rendering "bronze" (not brown) on the skin?
This is crazy! I have a job yet light matter! There's something to work again!
Thank you

July 13th, 2009 at 4:28
Again great work!
One feels the ring ... what a contrast!
Congratulations!

this will do more than an hour I discovered your blog and I find it great. Personally I'm just starting out in photography and I love all your songs. I love your lighting effects.
Voilas you doing now parties of my shortcuts.
I would come back regularly, I think.
Good evening and good night, it is already late-_-

August 7th, 2009 at 4:32
Hello,
First of all congratulations! Once again your work is stunning and this photo series could very well end up to illustrate a pub mode.
Otherwise, just a question that has nothing to do with this series but with the site: I love your new blog which is made in WORDPRESS I think. For the dressing you have a recuperative theme or did you create from A to Z. I love photo frames including a round edge.
Finally, last thing, you show me that your usual post processing is to edit the BDB and push the contrast. This is also true for this series?
Fab
Ps: Keep it up!
PS2: In fact the video tutorial you preach us with your mini camera?? -))
August 16th, 2009 at 9:47
Ben hello!
Great job you just do it again! It's really very nice!
I saw that you spoke of Orbis, I just wanted one of your impressions, because I'm on the verge of an ordered!
Looks great!

November 8th, 2009 at 11:23
Hello,
Very nice series bravo!
For cons, I am against to sell to readers that there was no obvious work Prod post after the shooting, it's great working with the application of some preset or under LRII Tshop, may matter what the series is great! but do not say, I made a sudden balance of Bl and X 3 nothing in RS, it is necessary, there is a job, too cool and we re_demande! but there the post prod behind .... we do not want to swing on a blog its little secrets = normal! no worries! but there should not say anything when there is a big job behind, which is has the honor of Photographer!
Best regards and thank you for this great series!
TN
November 10th, 2009 at 5:23
Bonour to all,
I posted two days ago thanks for this great job, and my comments on the post processing "OBVIOUS" of this series!
I just noticed that my post has been deleted! and this attitude is very "small" readers into believing that there is a balance of cutting BL + a tad of contrast adjusted under LRII!
I had just mentioned the fact that was the opposite of what we say to the friend "BEN", there is lot of work behind this series post processing with the application of several preset either LR or Photoshop and that it is not that of the simple contrast settings of clarity or contrast!
At the same time it's okay to say it! On the contrary, the series is great!
But do not swallow the reader that there is not a BIG job processing behind!
Now you can erase my post again! and in which case if you do, it is that my words are true and that it touches you! if not you justifiriez!
pending the erasure of my post, there will be at least 10/20 who read my comments
Sincerely yours,
TOny
November 11th, 2009 at 9:40
tony: On the blog I publish all comments, everyone is entitled to his opinion, the fact is that for reasons of spam I manually validate the comments before publication, I am on assignment in Bali with limited access to net, so no stress
For the rest, I'm pretty bad in postprocessing (confirm some ...) I'm not really able to work behind the BIG
I was suffering any problem explaining what I do behind my images, what I find unfortunate is that many believe that after the job is done, I personally prefer to be closer to my end result was the pdv
On my return, I'll post a couple pictures to explain what I do (basically, white balance, contrast, saturation, and some shadow / light and a high contrast enhancement
November 16th, 2009 at 8:43
Hi, Ben, first of all I want to congratulate you for this series which shows a perfect mastery both artistically and technically.
I think tony judge your work a little easier. Indeed, I do not see how the fact of adjusting its development parameters (and yes, it's called development and not editing) of a RAW file is like "heavy work editing ". In this case, the mere use of "image styles" or other presets his camera would be editing.
Nowadays, many photographers bossent with RAW and this requires an adjustment accordingly because the image out of the sensor is still lacking a little sharpness, contrast, and a "fine tuning" of the white balance. This is why software such as Lightroom, Capture one, dpp, etc.. have become essential for any photographer require. It is also catching up on that little "errors" of exposure or white balance, but I do not call it the editing.
Free for everyone to think what he wants, but I think the "big job" was to make sure to have nice frames (although the movement), adjust the flash to properly expose topic, to play on the pdc ...
Keep up the good work
Ben G.
November 18th, 2009 at 7:27
Tony Criticism is easy but art is difficult!
If you followed Benjamin for a while this is not the first time he explains his work, the development of RAW is mandatory as this file type is gross. And the way you develop your own style will create, the style found in Benjamin found in these works.
Before you inflame and criticize anything goes ("I am against to sell to readers that there was no obvious work Prod post after the shooting") with a background of paranoid, trying to know a little about.
November 18th, 2009 at 3:54
I also think that Tony did not touch one, and he does not even understand how he could "" one day to such a resulting output.
I read this blog for years, I can only thank Ben for us to share his knowledge. It makes me want to take photos.
November 18th, 2009 at 5:49
I think you're going a little fast Tony.
What I see in this series, more than the post processing is a perfect mastery of light. Ben showing us a long time that the basis of his work is light, and not the hours behind photoshop.
Anyway, given the amount of product image that Ben, I do not see how he could go after PS for ages.
Congratulations again for this series
What a pleasure to hear from you Ben, I was wondering if you abandoned the blog ...
Waiting to see your next posts, bon voyage.

@ Ben
Thank you very much for your answer ...
While awaiting your return ...
@ Arnaud,
You are nice, but as a Redac_Chf Fashion mag, I think I know "partfaitement topic! so there is no paranoid! but some 20 years experience! you can say the same? more I congratulated Ben for this series is far from TOP and any cirtique months when the series was "She Even" or to the control of the lighting ... and everything else, the shoot is great!
But I still say that there was a post prod work after (and important)! and the shoot are not posted raw sensor ...
But I await the explanations of when Ben has his process DVLP of RAW ....
Wait & See ...
Regards,
Tony

@ BEN
I just read (there are some nasty errors), I have no possibility of 2dition j'2cris since my Iphone ... you can fix please .... thank you .... Tony
November 24th, 2009 at 9:58
@ Tony:
"But I still say that there was a post prod work after (and important)! and the shoot are not posted raw sensor ... "
Raw sensor data, certainly not (and even less about this series "pepsée" for style) but try a picture with a light run (!), Contrast and saturation correction and you have your post production work '. . Do not go through every time photoshop either ...

Let's say for 95% of my images is C1 and export for the web, in this case for the record that I was looking for I wanted to push a bit more, so basically in LR is a little desat, the fill light and recovery of HL.
Which basically has to take 20 seconds on an image and then paste it on others personally I call it the RAW development and no editing has now everyone's vocabulary
January 7th, 2010 at 4:28
Hello!
Small issue in passing, that I've never used either C1 or LR, what's the difference? Is one more suited to certain alterations than the other and vice versa?

Will there be a difference one day raw and retouched picture?
Bravo for the pictures are very nice .. It changes a bit and it's still great!
