Photos Skanifest 2009
February 8th, 2009
Some pictures taken for Skanifest with groups: REEL BIG FISH, JOSHUA, MALIBU STACY, CAMPING SAUVACH, SUBURBAN LEGENDS.
I went to the festival after a week in bed not yet fully recovered from flu good, say the conditions were not optimal and that I was not at my best form.
I realize that I pretty much changed my way of working together for photos. I used to work very often spot metering on the face of my subject: it sure had the advantage of good exposure of the face, but often the backlights behind the subject had to change my display.
With spot metering, I was also dependent on the position of my collimators (spot metering is done on the selected AF point) - of course there is the AE lock, but very often the lighting changes so fast that the manual mode is the most comfortable solutions.
On this festival, so I worked mainly in manual exposure (approximately 90% of images), it takes just a little more responsive: you have to constantly adjust its torque diaph speed while keeping an eye on the isos.
By working with a box equipped with a grip greatly facilitates the settings of shutter speed and aperture in vertical-trigger. The ISO button is positioned on the D3, it allows for all settings without leaving the viewfinder.
Speaking of isos, the light was quite generous it allowed me to work with values between 640 and 1600 iso.

As usual working with RAW adjustments (white balance, contrast, saturation) in Capture One, I had to play the clone tool in Photoshop to remove dust that had a guest on my sensor.

More information about the picture together, see the tutorial (I should update soon)

You always impress me.
How, in a concert situation, you have managed to, with an aperture of f2 and a sensitivity of 800 ISO speed higher than 1/100th even when the light is generous (it is still thin in concert!)?
it makes me a kind of fussoire!
Anyway, once again magnificent series, the 22 is one of the best for me.
Good luck Ben.

For this we must thank the engineer light, it is true that power level, they put potato

Magnifico
February 9th, 2009 at 24:51
Hi Ben! Could you explain how you came to photograph the festival concerts you've previously covered: free knowing the world and / or your reputation or by simply paying your place and with a combination to switch your gear without security pushes you to the entrance!?
Thank you in advance!
Essential question for me because I broke my nose several times last year on the organizers who gave so-called credentials as professionals (pressure from record companies) and found me, having paid my friend to pass take an earful of good heart, with dozens of SLR users (and I'm not talking about compact ...) around me, a little bummed
February 9th, 2009 at 6:23
Sorry for this technical question but ...
you speak at the beginning of the measurement of light in spot and then you spend expo manual mode ... but you retain the measure passes in spot or you see in central weighted matrix??
I see you work with a bad hand in a cell configuration "concert"
again sorry for bringing up a technical point that may seem daunting for some ... and hats off to your pictures.
February 9th, 2009 at 6:33
oh yes I say, the head of the light on stage had a ball there, suddenly it shows in what you give and you also made yourself happy
. is communicative
February 9th, 2009 at 10:02
Bravo! as usual!
.
Light, the light you never seems to miss is breathtaking and the colors still pure. I am amazed and frustrated (never like this is me!)
What you had as objectives?
Bravo
and live RSS feeds
February 9th, 2009 at 10:04
I forgot ... you use the flash or not?
And how do we access the EXIF of your photos?
thank you
February 9th, 2009 at 10:10
Expo manual it does!
February 9th, 2009 at 10:20
Delphine: Thank you
Roman Lhuissier: In this case it is the organizers who contacted me, so in terms of access in the room, no problems.
If I really want to cover a concert, I contacted well in advance the organizers or group directly by explaining what I want, sometimes it happens, sometimes not. I did not have a concert in the hope that this passes, I do not like surprises!
Anecdote to pass for the concert Lenny Kravitz, The organizers had called me and other photographers, all officials have been transferred after 2 songs and plublic it could continue to shoot to SLR throughout the evening. Frustrating indeed!
Neele: I work empirically with a spot, I always start a F2, 1 / 100, iso 800, I look at my curves and I work on this basis
Krysalia: Clear, I just regret not having more potato and to have worked with over the crowd
Stephen: For the purposes, 50 and 85 1.4, 12/24 DX and 16mm fisheye and never flash (if you use your flash in concert, you could you make quick out of the room)
February 9th, 2009 at 10:20
Some beads, good support of lights anyway, it is not always so spoiled
"On this festival, so I worked mainly in manual exposure (approximately 90% of images), it takes just a little more responsive: you have to constantly adjust its torque diaph speed while keeping an eye on the isos."
That's the kick (and difference)!
February 9th, 2009 at 2:01
as usual What's that kills!
)
funny to see my redneck picture taken by you, we traveled the same places without crossing, I was in last Saturday also barter stuff ...
and then from qq weeks I have to put myself in flash in my work as a photographer, so I had this object in tjs horror, I found really interesting and great things that made me super fast forward through you and your advice (sorry for the stupid pun here
February 9th, 2009 at 2:06
Just passing like that, are still a few small bombs in your pictures!
Personal technical aspect I Tappe, but these pictures are fucking great!
February 9th, 2009 at 5:09
As you said earlier we must thank the engineers light! These kinds of events are often very graphic. But after you still have to learn to fit, make the right words and find the look that fans will not find!
Bravo

Beautiful colors in these photos.

I do think that the light engineers did a good job;
I covered an event this weekend where there was no light. The musicians were constantly in the dark ... Every now and then red. So no way to take advantage of anything.
When one comes across a scene like that with all the beautiful lights have fun.
For someone sick, you're well out worry.

Chapreau for this series!
Moreover, I find your photos of concerts in general are very successful. What strikes me most is the color rendering! The colors are saturated to do (but not too much!) And warm enough. A perfect combination, indeed!
Also doing from time to time pictures of the concert (I share your opinion regarding the obligation to work in manual but I am often able to spot!), I am very far from your réultat flamboyant!
Yours
Gilles

Always clean and well managed!
February 9th, 2009 at 10:02
Always on top, Ben!
February 10th, 2009 at 6:43
It kills the series Ben.
February 10th, 2009 at 8:38
Alala these colors, truly sublime
February 10th, 2009 at 2:12
Cat hat pôôôôooooo
Colorful and dynamic images.
I bow again.
February 10th, 2009 at 9:14
Congratulations Ben, still a great series!
February 11th, 2009 at 1:57
pity you were not at the top of your form ...
because it is simply beautiful! I'm sure it would have been better
Finally, great job, actually a shame that you are able to surround more photos!
still a good job, it's getting better! good framing and good use of lights above the background!
bravo
February 11th, 2009 at 4:54
Always good, always clean, I never get tired of seeing your photos ... some say that the style is repetitive but you have yours and that's a lot ... well done Ben, continues to make me love the picture like that
February 11th, 2009 at 5:45
Oh wonderful series, and colorful, congratulations, you'll enjoy with the lights!
February 12th, 2009 at 1:20
hello Ben,
I confirm what I already said in another post: the picture together, it's really an area you should invest fully, your pictures have that little something extra that makes the difference ....
good luck
February 14th, 2009 at 4:24
Beautiful series of colored light engineers, of course, but had to put that in there There's music and the implacable eye out who apologizes for the flu, well i want to have the flu every day moa, if it can give the same thing!
What to say, really nice all this strongly next time!
Cheers

February 19th, 2009 at 9:05
Again a great job ...

I hope one day I too can do this kind of images ...
For now I'm starting to turn towards a new style which is more like. (> Less and less natures of birds ...)
Strongly another article ...
February 20th, 2009 at 4:31
Again superb concert photos! In light of the dive, emotions ... In short, despite the flu a good mastery of the subject I think!
It's always a pleasure to be back on your pages!
keep going man ...
February 20th, 2009 at 4:33
Beautiful pictures! Was it helpful to note.
Otherwise, you forgot a dust on the brass of RBF.
I myself have covered the skanifest on previous editions (it was another room) and I could not come this year. At the same time, musically, it was less my cup of tea. One would have to meet by cons ...

Hello!
A small question, is this the series that you gave to the organizers (even reduced)? or a personal selection?
I'm not always choose which photos select, knowing that different viewpoints exist:
• the photographer's technique, which will not release a photo well composed, not cramée / bite ... well veiled
• that of the artist, who prefers, I think, be in action, even if it has either a photo blur, it pleases him more if he is driven to jump into the air for example is not it? (I may be wrong)
• that of the public who wants a photo that represents the concert he saw, felt, or the atmosphere of the concert should come out
I suspect a mix of the three is most appropriate, to see pictures that bring together all this .. but I can not at least
If you can take the time to answer me, I'll be very grateful

It's great, I even behind in my own blog ...
Fredp: Clearly the light was abundant
dine: There were actually many damn thing to barter
thank you!
Matthew, thanks!
Benjamin Ziegler: Beyond the technical aspect, it's really the look and attitude that I will get it!
Sophie: Yep, what I regret is not having worked more in the public or there VAIT good pictures to do
Gilles: Thanks also to engineer light
Makoto: Thanks!
Fred: Thank you
Merwen: I'm pretty happy with this series, in retrospect than in the series of Wolurock
matmoon:
Dati: Thanks! Should we be captured once
Vincent Ogloblinsky: Thank you
Nawacki: Yep as said before I complain a little to have been a little more in the public
Pouvrem: Thank msieur
Jonathan Naime: Nice light and good people cool
Andy: I agree but if you think it is rather a pragmatic low-paying but photographically speaking it is the foot!
Fred: I'm working
Olivier: thank you!
Damien: To each his own field, but anything that affects directly or indirectly to the portrait and it is the people that I'm having
Oli: Thanks!
Fred: Yep, dust everywhere, since I cleaned my sensor
Musically I have some of the same opinion as you
Olouf: Interesting your question in this case it's my personal selection, images that have an interest in my photography and settlement that are representative of the evening.
Technically my other pictures are of the same quality, I just do purely personal choice to view some of my blog, it is best for me to have a set of images which take your three criteria and the I approach this case.
Now it is clear that I have a lot of different expressions
March 5th, 2009 at 5:27
hello Ben,
actually pay the part is tricky to live only in the photo artists, but some photographers (as Jean-Marie Perier to take a French example) have managed a very successful career in this field. And I think, objectively, you have the technical and artistic for that.
It is, of course, IMHO.
