Portraits, Moo, Updates!

November 26th, 2008

I started having a little trouble to introduce my articles, it usually starts with "foo asked me to" or "Machin contacted me" In this article I will first thank everyone who left comments on the previous article .

Thank you to: le_zla, Alex, Eddie, delphine, Shooter, Thierry S, Gam, Bertrand, Reynald, lomoseb, dine, seb, jean-luc, pixel, Fifteen, Manunu, Olivier, MickymX, Ju, Jonathan Naime, Dati, ARCADIS , skal, Antoine Magnier, lomoseb, Bertrand Benoit CEZARD, thrush, Andy

I advance in my thoughts, I multiply the meetings and I think a future project, I realize that people are really my favorite subject, through portraiture, reportage.

For portraits I feel like different types of images:

  • Work on a story of long-term in order to have something more successful over built.
  • Portraits very licked, more sophisticated, my portraits are far enough at the time, now I have no desire to "build" an image.
  • More cinematic images, work on the ambience, narration.

These projects will not happen right away, the important thing for me is to know which direction to move forward.

Meanwhile I continue to do a lot of pictures, I chose here to share some photos taken with Sylvija, Sylvija contacted me to do some portraits of her at the place where she met her companion. She was looking for black and white, with a rather mixed character in the image.

For reasons of time we have not had time to get together before the shooting.

I looked in these images include the place in a somewhat roundabout playing with reflections, nightmare for the autofocus, I had to often work in manual focus.

Session (yes it's a little like physio-term) lasted about 1 hour, I choose to be fairly selective in the images that I present.

As usual the images were derawatisées in Capture One and resized for the web.

Some of the images were drawn in large Achromatic (very good print quality but quite expensive).

Another photo that I like a lot and that did not work for me in black and white (too confusing plans) presents a series of flaws, but ultimately I found the attitude and expression very interesting.

Moo, the return of the revenge business cards

Another thing that always helps apparently everyone knows except me, now Moo business cards in the format "card" can now fully customize the front and back, for those who do not know, the advantage is to achieve a different photo card.
http://www.photob.be/images/2008/moo2.jpg

The print quality is always at the rendezvous, the price is 15 euros for 50 cards (small cards were at 13 euros for 100 cards), everything comes in a small cardboard box handy.

http://www.photob.be/images/2008/moo1.jpg

Small note in passing I strongly recommend to print on a black background, because in the presence of small white spots (in my opinion a limitation of digital printing) Moo has offered free to send me back the same set, the problem was less noticeable but always present.

MAI magazine cover

During the summer I made some pictures with Malgosia who needed pictures for a magazine advertisement for the AMI (Association International Meetings) purpose was to provide a dozen images to illustrate his interview.

I have not received the coverage in electronic format, I should get the magazine to share with you the other pictures in this series.

Articles in preparation

Two articles to come, one of the shooting of a Belgian DJ, or is to avoid the guy in front of his turntables concentrated air like "I will not hold a skeud crazy but I remain focused" a short video will also be available with the conditions of the shoot.

The other article about ringflash of the poor, with the before-after and how to build one for under a no (idea taken from home strobist )

    Cool! Great! Everything!
PS: all you have to say instead of session scéance is more hype ;)

  2. Michel Says:

Very nice set, as has become habit ...

Agree with you on the photo through the window. Reflections give a nice color effect, but damage in B / W, the reflection of the face is disturbing. Maybe have you in a photo series with reflections positioned differently, it can work ...

  3. ph @ Zer Says:

I love your portraits bcp Ben, I complain, moreover, that my partner does not want to be photographed for me to try this kind of portrait is ...!
I love the color photo Sylvija, very, very successful.
For me, the only criticism one could make is that this is framed too just up and down.

    Good luck.

  4. Sby Says:

A lack of time that I almost interpret (wrongly?) As a moment of doubt. This is reassuring and generous to share perspectives that the photo makes you want to explore. Taking pictures tend to make me schizophrenic on the edges but it does not prevent me to have this insatiable need to keep practicing : Grin:

  5. Guido Says:

    Hi Benjamin,

For the "tricks" cinematic narrative constructed j'connais not more specialized than Monzani:

  6. Thomas Says:

    Beautiful portraits!
I'm more a fan of your work!
And future articles seem exciting! strongly on! : Eek:

  7. Bertrand Says:

Superb companion to the series (which is very lucky : Smile: ).
Moo service is really good, I also tested.
For the component, "do it yourself", I recommend a great site that explains how to perform his gear for little money. See my article: http://www.webab.be/wp/diy .
There is another site http://www.lighting-academy.com . This is a site germanophone but with pictures and videos so ...

  8. mko Says:

I tried the real Moo card and like you I found the quality to meet you!

  9. glencc Says:

I was eager to read you. Now that thou hast given us the mouth water ... can not wait for future articles

  10. The Zla Says:

I joined ph @ Zer, the picture color is very successful, and he has raised his two minor flaws do not make a failed photo loins away. This is the photo or the story is most felt.

Anyway glad you read it again, time passed ...

  11. Olivier Says:

I like your work - the photo of Maglogosia is simple, clean and successful ...

    a + + +

  12. Fred Says:

    Superb b & w!
    I'm in love ... : Wink:

  13. Electronick Says:

Stoked to hear from you, and see these beautiful new.

Come on, am eager to see other items in your preparation. And finally, as usual, a hat off, because the quality is always present, it is impressive.

  14. Benoit Says:

    Beautiful pictures again. Congratulations Ben!
I appreciate your comment about your search for different types of images. For it is true that your portraits of today are very similar to those of yesterday. They are too posed for my taste. You have a superb technique. It should now be more subjects taken from life, to Doisneau. Or may be more serious. Try yourself perhaps more social issues ..
Anyway congratulations, because beyond my criticism, I'd love to have your level! PQS and I'm the only one!

  15. MickymX Says:

Wow great to come across an article by Saturday morning so ugly.
Highly selective series actually ... nice model, beautiful black and white but once will not hurt I'd rather shoot your color (except I found the head too close to the upper part: p)
For the staging and storytelling by the photo, I suggest you just like Guido to go for a walk on the site Monzani, if you do not know yet.
It depicts several pictures on it ... you'd be more a picture right?
Thank you for your feedback anyway.

  16. Thomas C. Says:

    Benjamin Good evening,
Thank you for this interesting article as usual. I want to return to the photo Sylvija color (which does not in black and white). I wanted to make sure you were aware of the notion of "color perspective" (in painting, Cezanne used it much), which is among others to set the foreground and warm colors to suggest the background by cold.
This picture works so well for me that I was not able to prevent me from thinking about it!

Well this was the moment culturally.
    Still some wonderful shots anyway.

  17. Krysalia Says:

hahem, you were not alone in not knowing for moo : Razz:: Grin:

  18. Benjamin | photob Says:

    delphine: Great idea that!

Michael: Yep, it depends of the image, but I like the photo on the different vertical reflections, even if it created a "halo" in the face :)

ph @ zer: Thank you! Is not that your companion is starting to friends, friends of friends ect ...

Sby: Clear, I would ask the difficult case!

Guido: It's been a long time I visit his site, I love, although sometimes I find it somewhat gnagnan :)

    Thomas: thank you!

    Bertrand: Thanks for the link!

mko: Yep, the prices are quite affordable and more :)

    glencc: Thank you :)

    LeZla: Thank you!

Olivier: It was the goal, having something simple and natural

    Fred: Thank you :)

    Electronick: The rest comes :)

Benoit: I'll meet the side not to put too much, actually I was looking for both things calmer, more work and more parralèle image reporting, then pull in both directions.

MickymX: It's true that I have less desire to work on series, I want the strongest images, without necessarily spread throughout the session in camera :)

Thomas C: Thanks for that instant cultural, it's true that I tend to do that much pictured coporate, work with a light box with a filter to warm my subject and background to create a cooler! thank you for the clarification :)

    Krysalia: : Grin:

  19. lomoseb Says:

    Owls are expecting more.
Have you seen the "Modern Life" Depardon?
    Very inspiring story for long-term.

I'll probably put me to communicate better with Wordpress for a photoblog, your principle is a gallery plugin?

For the ringflash, I made one too and the results are good against all odds but it is cheap home cheap, Orbis has just come out has a "reasonable" price strobist see again and again :)

  20. Fred Says:

What's more, your work always gives as much desire to go beyond what I normally do, push the limits of my humdrum and put me a good kick in the rear train (train! !) "go ahead boy, to Ben's like, this can only be good, finally over super mega awesome" if there's the tata ginette but it's less funny and especially of light years of your sessions ( it's more hype, actually!)

Continued to show us the way (without too much to dazzle the .. oh and if is going ahead, everything is loose we do go for the big void : Twisted: This will make us as well!

    Regards : Smile:

    Fred

  21. s0fa Says:

Boudiou loooooongtemps it was that I was not gone! What about ... continues, it makes you want to see more! I love the last picture of the last series, I find that the ambient light is magnificent, almost worked for you in the studio!

KEEP talking studio (and your desire to make portraits more licked), I will do my first studio Saturday with a model ... I'm not sleeping longer ... the shoot begins to 13h but I'll be there at 9am (that is a necessary luxury when you start) to polish up the light and to experiment. I'll try to make a storyboard too, I have no idea how to do it for the day but I want to avoid leaving things to chance ...

Well I know why I write all this, no doubt to exorcise the nervousness! Short! Congratulations Ben, I wish you to continue to explore to what you flourish artistically. The technique is acquired, free rein to creativity!

    See you soon!

  22. Antoine Magnier ak Twan Says:

I started just to find my moo too small! : D

  23. williboy Says:

I just have one question is how you generally contrast and brightness in Capture One

  24. Benjamin | photob Says:

lomoseb: Yep, I saw very good :)

for the gallery, it's not someone who made me the plugin and is not super happy to find it anywhere :) , Yep I saw the orbis, for now I play with mine, it's about that stuff on pros, my box of quality street will not move the masses ;)

Fred: Thank msieur! I hope to still evolve!

sofa: Yep, in fact the studio to some extent it is often the stuff to recreate real life (it is not always in agreement) by mastering all!

I hope your studio went well anyway!

Antoine Magnier ak Twan: Tin Nick has this extension : Grin: ! In any case, they are well cool!

williboy: It depends, I have no default :)

  25. RudyB Says:

    Hello ben,

First post here, after a few months when I rode and I learn as much .. I am impressed with this series! Your B & W seems pure ... how did you process? C1? there is no real dominant ...

    Continue like this!

    has it all!

    ;)

    Rudy

  26. Lomoseb Says:

Ok I understand for the plugin, I will find an alternative. Good c is anecdotal but the galleries do not pass on the iPhone (no scroll).

  27. Eddy Says:

Those who have tested Moo, you can not find it "under-exposed" pictures slightly?
It will not see too much on the color, but black and white it shocks me a bit.

  28. Sophie Says:

Tell me it is where your preparation items listed here?
I look forward to reading them. The topics really interest me.
    : Wink:

  29. Chris Says:

    Hello,
Quick note to express my admiration for all your work. It's been 3-4 weeks since I discovered this site. And I go back regularly.
Lack of time, my camera still for several months in a cupboard. In view of your pictures, it gives me the urge to stand out and give me new challenges.

The above photo through the window is a very interesting portrait. Wonderful photo. Who has more interest in color and black and white.

Good luck. It's nice to see a true passion!
