Valerie Lawrence marriage
October 20th, 2008
Valerie and Laurent contacted me to cover their wedding on October 18 on the advice of Gabriel which I had covered the wedding in June .
Difficult to introduce this type of article without repeating what I said in the introduction section for the marriage of Fatima and Gabriel:
"We saw each other once to determine everyone's expectations, important step to the proper" feel "people and their expectations: No kitsch, no selective desaturation (they're not alone I find it atrocious, a part of the color image and the other in black and white), photos full of life with a reportage approach preserving an aesthetic quality.
I always have a hard time with the wedding photos of some photographers with images much typed with married head in a wooden frame inside the frame color and the rest in black and white, the couple extended in the grass with bouquet in color and the rest b / w, shots flash crush everything, whites cramés, rendering fair game, the sepia yellow piss ect ...
So I arrived Saturday morning at 8 o'clock in the morning at the hairdresser / makeup to achieve a full report of the day, I do not see the cover of a marriage otherwise, it tells a story here, the long time spent with bride and groom can "feel" the atmosphere to restore it faithfully we witness moments that we try to capture as accurately. "
To change and for comfort I took the Lowepro Rolling CompuTrekker from home, it goes a little against my previous choices; on a marriage, it usually moves up 4-5 places (at the bride and groom , town hall, church, park, and the place of receipt) rolls the bag which prevents a shoulder to resign and the material is fairly well protected from shock, you can also get more equipment.
Once in place I can just drop it close to me to have quick access to content.
Hardware I took the D3 (D200 with a backup) on 12/24 Tokina, Nikon 16mm fisheye, the 50mm, 85mm and the 80/200, two flashes (SB600 and SB800 a) and a reflector.
The reflector, it's great that modulates light at very little cost. The 80/200 I decided it's more wins, I'm using it on a wedding ever.

I used my flash only for studio and images of the evening, I never use flash during the day.
I proposed to Valerie to redo a pseudo photo studio as I had done on a recent cover with two external flash in light boxes ( see article on the subject ), the place did not present the same configuration ( not high ceilings, less space, less interesting background).
To remedy this I took a studio background to make shots in B / W rather mixed, the comic thing is that the bottom (2m70) does not fit in my car, so I had to cut (a very clever, see left side of the bottom ...) part of the bottom before you leave.

I used a flash to light about me and the other to clarify my background, I realize that working with three sources is not the luxury to think about for the next improvised studios

Family, friends are generous people, open it allowed me to go very quickly in the atmosphere to restore the marriage better, it can take images much at the heart of the event.
Achievement of good wedding photography is in my opinion 50% of relationships, if I do not feel in my place or I bothers people this will be reflected in the images. The goal is to approach the maximum while remaining professional, you have "just" the right balance.
My limit of 650 images was quickly sealed by the heavy demand for group photo knowing that I double my views systematically (eyes closed) I must have close to 80 additional images, I'm not very fond of this kind of images but on the other side is in great demand and that's part of marriage.

The studio was a resounding success, the "problem" with this kind of animation is precisely its success, we must manage people and make sure not to monopolize the evening. So I did two photo sessions with a break in the middle.
In the end I spent an exciting day with generous people and open an exhausting day I've given a lot and when I have received, it may seem "commercial" for saying this but I think the images are there to testify.

A question by the way, why the 12/24 Tokina? For the D200?
October 20th, 2008 at 7:55
Beautiful idea that this "portable studio" ...
It's really the type of images that I like. Especially in b & w.
For the rest, as always, it is natural and pro. An excellent job.
October 20th, 2008 at 8:46
Good series, with strong white cramés time (table) but it is a matter of taste. The best light is that of the evening with lots of bokeh
Question / Have you ever tried the flash remote for the evenings? Rendering may be a little too dark for a wedding but it gives a more eye-catching texture to photos bcp evening IMHO
October 20th, 2008 at 9:41
What I like about your pictures is that beyond the technical mastery is indisputable that you wanna meet the people you photograph, one feels a very human side, I rarely saw the wedding photos as vivid and expressive!
October 20th, 2008 at 9:52
This fantastic shoot!
It is believed almost out of the evening when you finish viewing the series.
Thank you!
October 20th, 2008 at 10:20
Hello Ben,
Once again, I am completely amazed by the quality of your pictures. What creativity!
a small matter, for studio portraits, do you direct models from scratch or is there an element of spontaneity? all ideas of poses do they come from you?
congratulations anyway!
October 20th, 2008 at 10:48
Ahahaha!
I also had to cut my backdrop, by the hard against less than you - you've abused
Great series, I like the rendering of photoboot, a third light? You would have set right? I like this rendering.
You énverve me with your pictures perfect, I go to bed!
October 20th, 2008 at 11:46
Another beautiful series Ben, I love the look of pictures lil studio.
October 20th, 2008 at 1:28
Oh and another question, everything has been developed in Capture One? You sharpen your rules how? Because it continued to show me the sharpness of your pictures ...
Anyway this is a most enjoyable series of wedding photos I've seen.
And I had not had the teps to clarify this morning, but the party "studio" Black and White is just excellent, especially the guy with a mustache (the father of the bride?) With that edge into the light and other in the shade ... all on a white background, I hook especially.
October 20th, 2008 at 2:01
Very good story ... You excel as usual.
Convenient location of glasses in the car for goals!
Portraits "photobooth" I think are essential to your wedding and made B & W is superb.
Background paper, cloth, ...?
Using a tripod for these photos?
October 20th, 2008 at 2:35
"Making good wedding photos is in my opinion 50% of relationships, if I do not feel in my place or I bothers people that will be felt in the images."
But it is!!!! totally agree ..
October 20th, 2008 at 2:48
One word Ben, "Beautiful" ...
The idea of portable studio is not new but you were able to adapt well and results are spectacular (I remember this one
)
I see you starting to get addicted to day also cons
Great art.
Bravo

Tell me benji photo: BEN_2576.jpg
it was made in the shade? flash?
October 20th, 2008 at 3:56
This small studio improvised and images that come out I think are a real plus for the newlyweds, which changes the story more "traditional"!
You are a well of ideas. Some say saturation / contrast etc. ... (forum toussah what ...) but I'm really a fan.
What a long way since the first images.
Your investment in your passion is really impressive and we really do share top
Well, this is a comment a little "boot licking"
, But I'm really into what you do
October 20th, 2008 at 3:57
AH and portrait toothpick really stand out I think! Very beautiful series
October 20th, 2008 at 5:05
Ouch, I think I'm bleeding.
October 20th, 2008 at 5:14
You not stop. (:
October 20th, 2008 at 5:17
Aaaah. The portable studio, it's all good! This brings the touch of "non-deja vu!" I love these b / w! I say, it's pretty daring ...

The idea of the studio with seamless top is for a wedding and if more people like this is really great.
I looked through against € 83 fares roll ca I find very expensive (for paper), is that you have a good plan has any chance?
October 20th, 2008 at 7:54
This is where you see that you know how to renew and always looking for new ideas.
It's infuriating
October 21st, 2008 at 24:09
thank you again for these great photos!
guys, this guy is too gééééénial
Frankly everyone is on the ass
So in particular, continuing like that! Highly more ... (frankly we could well take you in with our luggage, but hey we will just our unit getable
...)
October 21st, 2008 at 5:47
Very nice series,
No need for third light for the studio, just a stroke of reflectors on the right to lead a little.
October 21st, 2008 at 10:44
Thank you for your many returns! I will answer questions in order:
Eddie: Just because I have not bought other wide angle
Fred: Thank you!
pixel: Bah whites burnt, it makes me come and I claps, the most important is the brightness of the face of my subject, remote flash for the evenings so this happens to me but it's quite compelling, the flash mounted on the case I also use it for development (through the projection of the red lasers) so it means I have to carry with a flash and a flash mounted on hand.
Shooter: thank you
Anthony: Yep, I like it's different and ca "breaks" the story a bit classic
Andy: This is an exchange, I offer tips and I listen but everything goes very fast
delphine: Third light on the right, next time I type a reflector!
Vincent: Thanks!
Eddy: The sharpen is by default in C1, I then applied a batch according to the purpose of the image (web, print)
The mustachioed man (father's brother) for the record does not like his picture, I had to fight for this expression and this is one of my favorite images.
Sophie: Do you take advantage of the scenery constantly
background paper, no tripod seen shutter speed
Ksh: Thank msieur! Yeah well i like cons days yet!
Masden: a shadow, the shadow paradoxically it is always brighter! I do group shots at 50 mm
ArnO_62: I try to apply things that I like, I draw everywhere and I try to evolve new tricks! Thank you for your comment
Dati:
Gee: No. On the contrary!
Bertrand: Should always push a little
Lomoseb: This is not excessive given that is reusable, you just cut the unusable parts and place
Jerome: But clearly!
Lawrence: I had a great time with you! (Frankly I'd be hiding in your suitcase
)
Jo: It did!
October 21st, 2008 at 11:04
I wondered. You are using one box? For the ceremony you have tofs at 50mm and 24mm at the other. You change your goals or you have another box?
Because I did not decide tjs c which is better, two boxes is a bit boring!
cheers
October 21st, 2008 at 11:19
I think he uses only one case
October 21st, 2008 at 11:21
like small question: did you work in 50mm at your mini studio?
October 22nd, 2008 at 24:18
Good evening delphine: Always one box, I tested and I'm doing with two
Laurentd: Yep the 50 is my favorite goal
October 22nd, 2008 at 1:01
Interesting your system with one box. We see most photographers with two devices (in marriage, but also in many other situations) today.
Besides, I note in passing that you do everything in fixed focus (except 12/24, but mounted on a D3, it is a zoom with a very small range), it is rare for a wedding.
Why not use a 24-70 for example?
October 22nd, 2008 at 3:05
Superb series (as usual), my favorite is that of "mustachioed guy" beautiful treatment ....
highly more ...
October 22nd, 2008 at 4:15
Beautiful images of as usual! Quick question: why did not you would take a wizard, which would help to get t the flashes, a sort of already do some photos, take a few tofs with your D200 for example, your objos out, hold the reflector, organizing people for Photo taken ca ... I say, I live not even in europe but I think it would please a lot of amateur photographers t help and see how you bump and roof, it allégerai t ...
Another issue with the D3 you're still forced to use the flash (like nightclubs for evenings or when the newlyweds dance), given the fantastic management of isos, or is it a deliberate choice to lighting effects such ?
voila, out in case if you go in China, let me know, I live over there and know plenty of good deals!
bye and good luck
October 22nd, 2008 at 2:04
Hi Ben,
What sucite my curiosity what are your pictures scrolling page of receptions:
The indoor pictures - the photo of architects and girls wore ...
In general I agree that you bcp ideas and energies, that is one of mons sense and probably not your qualities as a photographer ...
For the wedding, I feel that creativity, that said, I find my personal taste, that there are too image playing on the diagonal or it is not justified and are more likely to destabilize the frames, so that d other images on this apsect playing less reversed, paraissnet more balanced ... There are a few photos of the evening playing the diagonal works well, you will recognize many images or digaonale is not suitable for framing ...
Denouveau, your idea of a portable studio is excellent idea, and finally the use of electronic flash lights in the boxes are really a 3rd flash is not too much, that you will report to you in your forging own experience ...
People auraont probably a strong interest in this kind of image, I have no doubt aps, that said, I find the images a little hard, too hard, and some shadows digracieuses, but perhaps that most people to whom are the pictures do not notice, and are content like this ...
if not for the rest, I like to see your tjrs good ideas ...
a + + +
Olive
October 22nd, 2008 at 2:49
Eddy: For my part I handicap a second box and take up too much space but I can quite understand that we enjoy working with two cameras
For the objectives, primes outside their brightness and their dive, I like their side "simple" I view very well cover my goal before taking a look through the viewfinder, I can prepare my frame before bring the case to the face.
For the 12-24 you parfaitemet because it can be used between 20 and 24 mm
Matahi: The treatment is the same as the others, what is really interesting is the expression of the subject!
CEZARD Benoit: Yes it is an idea to dig! For photos of "dance" I am forced to use the flash, the subjects are in the dark and I have enough speed to freeze the
I note the invitation for China
Olivier: I'm in the make a new article on precisely this topic
Looked for framing, I abused during longemps either to fill my part is to "boost" my pdv now I try to calm the above and I think that in this series remains fairly anecdotal.
For the mini studio travallier with an additional source or reflector seems necessary. I do not like your way of insinuating that I'm doing something voluntarily lower quality s knowing that the customer does not notice it and are content. Very far from me that kind of attitude
October 22nd, 2008 at 3:27
That's what I remembered for the 12/24 (when I was tested on a Nikon film, I was surprised at how this situation .. and seeing your photos I now regret having sold: p)
I totally agree on your point of view concerning primes. But we must have time to change lenses quickly if need is the only thing that bothers me ... and push me one day to buy a zoom or two. Obviously you you Gerês perfectly
Regarding the criticism of Oliver on the frames, there is truth .. sometimes a little too diagonal. For cons, I do not agree at all about the history of mini studio. They (I could be wrong) have probably been a game "bonus" for guests and their treatment is very pleasant with real style.
In fact, for me, the couple have had three sessions in a picture. The wedding session (with the classics), the session studio portraits and portrait session in the evening / box (colored with flash, in short, as in the article of this blog on the same topic)
So for me, the guests is pampered and not usurped on the quality of work.
October 22nd, 2008 at 4:56
Hi Ben,
Very good site in passing.
What solution you are using to trigger your remote flash 2?
A +
Greg
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:25
Little off topic / For remote flash, you have the SB-29 cable that includes an AF illuminator on the part that attaches to the device. I think you have an SB-800 minimum for it to work properly but I'm not sure ... I'll try that
October 23rd, 2008 at 1:29
I never said and written that you were doing something voluntarily lower quality, because people who come to the photos would notice it.
The details that you are capable of improvement as photographers or for other photographers (for example you would submit a photo club, or agencies) probably are not a oiel uninformed, not having used to see everyday images, and therefore they would probably already very happy because this "eye" there simply has not the ability to perceive these insignificant details ...
You will notice very quickly that by showing your photos to warn eyes, agencies or other, that they cassereint you less happy in the direction of hair that untrained eye, not to break you or put you down, nor to bore you, but because they detect more detail improved at speeds your images ourraient be improved,
After you make it what you want their opinion ...
October 23rd, 2008 at 1:45
Eddy, I'm not saying the opposite, if you read me better, I never challenged the idea of the studio and the rest ...
Or are you looking for that idea, I never said that Ben was not neglecting ...
What I am saying is that the untrained eye will probably be faster and ultimately be satisfied probalement less difficult than a discerning eye ...
It is likely that he simply did not notice the details for improvement to the images, and therefore merely image that appear to sense how extraordinary, considering the character factor affecting dircetment the person, that these same customers customer trends to grow auraont images, since they tell their stories ...
whereas if we are content to see the purely technical side, if the picture is subject to other people in the field, the return will probably be too much different ...
I never questioned, nor will the rest of Ben kindly, loving the good work ...
Go on, A + + +
October 25th, 2008 at 11:04
Perfect perfectible, warned ... Too much technology in this speech.
Because frankly, the advice from the pros ...
Finally, the main thing is the sparkling eyes of happiness of the newlyweds and their families discovering these great pictures ("superb" for a normal human eye like me)
October 27th, 2008 at 4:21
What you call what art portraits photobooth? Photobooth for me is just one application on mac
October 27th, 2008 at 4:31
A photobooth is originally a photo booth, as they say in French. And Apple has taken the phrase to his program (which is pretty fun. I admit Avoi spent time with my kids with this software when I bought my mac
)
See, this site, eg: http://www.rentphotobooths.com/
October 27th, 2008 at 4:35
Thank you for the reply, meanwhile I searched on google is my understanding ^ ^.
It is true that the application is adictive, a band mate to the computer, photobooth and went to have fun for a good hour at least
October 27th, 2008 at 4:38
Indeed, it is better to have to put Ben in a photo booth box ...

Finally, it is my opinion
October 28th, 2008 at 10:46
Hi,
Issue for your pictures in general and the 6th in the series with monssieur that puts his shirt.
How do you do for a very bright white? Is this the objectives and limped used? or you push a little more brightness? Unless you use the flash?
October 31st, 2008 at 5:03
Eddy: We agree
greg: for now I use the shutter release of Nikon SU800
pixel: Thanks for the info, I note
olivier: Sure, but what is the interest to present images of a marriage agency? I understand perfectly for press images or the illusion of
, I do not see the interest of presenting this type of image agency, now if I had to make the image of illusion on the subject of marriage it is clear that I would be much more rigorous a lot of details and I also spend more time than a few seconds per image
Betrand: thank you
Dnicolas.FR: As explained by Bertrand is a photo booth
Shakib: No flash just a good measure of light shooting
December 30th, 2008 at 2:15

It is breathtaking N series & B. If you have time to do a little tutorial showing how to realize such a treatment, you might just be a bunch of happy
