Celebrities Then, the Folies September 26
September 29th, 2008
Back from Vienna, after spending a week working non stop to make images "corporate" produce images festive and energetic is a breath of fresh air in a smoky room.
I usually travel very légé for this type of coverage, a wide-angle photos of the place and atmosphere and a 50mm to work with images more graphics and of course a flash.
This time, I boarded a little more material in the slinghsot; the D3, the 12/24 (the Tokina DX), the 16mm fisheye, the 50mm, the 85mm, an SB 800 and SU-Controller 800.
The D3 has no built-in flash and thus it can not control other external flashes. The SU-800 is a module that can easily manage two sets of flash (more flash may be part of the same group).
The SU-800 has advantages and disadvantages compared to another SB 800.
The goal tonight was to use the box in one hand and guide my flash with the other, I quickly realized that a major drawback of the SU-800 and it does not have a lazer to the Focus on one subject in the dark. (I made some images oriented "branding" as the first of this series with the remote flash)
Knowing that most of the time people are in the dark and you're looking to capture a moment, an expression, I rapidemment the board with the flash mounted on the housing to make sure I have a development fast and accurate. The SU-800 has other advantages, would stay again in a future article.
I realized a lot of pictures, lots of pictures "people" "groups of people smiling" (people are always in high demand), I also benefited to have goals that open to make some images more graphic, more atmosphere and some interesting portraits.
I have deliberately not included the pictures "people" that apart from the technical aspect is not very interesting photographically.
Exposure level, as usual for such images, matrix metering (for flash and subjects) and manual exposure for the background.
If you want more information for this type of images you can see the tutorial on the subject of the photo of the evening . Speaking of tutorial I just added a tutorial by Julien on long exposures and ND400 filter /

Another great series. I confess that you control, really about you on the fingertips. Even trying to follow your tutorials, I can not have pictures as bright as you.
Nice work.

it's really a nice set, it's very rare to have a little elegance in this kind of evening and the idea of masks was welcome, you knew how to take full advantage, it makes very good ...
more images are very clean with no effect of yogurt flash, here's a nice combination of skills and experience of the D3
only thing that saddens me, the almost systematic use of framing discussed, not that I do not appreciate your trademark, but the proportion is a little overwhelming I find

It's been a while since I am this blog and I'm always blown away by each new series.
Again the technical and artistic mastery is impressive. This is what is called master about it!
J'm'en'll go read the tutorial ...

Indeed, still a nice set, very colorful. There are just typical of your leg.
By cons I have the feeling of seeing two completely different evenings, level atmosphere, "people" and scenic, and I struggle to find the links between the two ..
September 29th, 2008 at 11:50
Congratulations beautiful cover, I think that the photos are "people" who give the best atmosphere in the evening, and especially do best out side the "libertine".
It is true that pictures of the scene in close-have difficulty finding their place in the middle of the series (although they are very nice).
It would be interesting could integrate into the background scene photos "people"!
anyway congratulations

Beautiful as usual!
I love your use of the fish with the flash, it gives some wonderful images as the 7753.
What fascinates me in your pictures is your control (increasing) the light: for example on the 7815 how do you do to stay at 800 iso?
When I see such a beautiful use of light makes me want to swing my D200 out the window ...
Personal favorite for 7888! Something special emerges: the eyes, the sweetness ouateuse fund.
The organizers of the evening were a nice use of Mirano: stage, lights ... They should be happy to have a beautiful cover of night.
I saw your background image via hfr: that enormous progress since your first posts, hat!
PS: the photo of the poster of the evening is not a photo of one of your series? Or resemblance?
Congratulations and thank you again for sharing your experience, your work and your talent!

As my classmates:'s all good! I must say that the series I was almost fired a tear of nostalgia: I left Belgium 16 years ago now, I can not believe the Mirano still standing! It was here that I was going crazy at the time ... It rejuvenates not all that!
Owl series Ben, congratulations!

Hi all,
It's been a long time that I am your progress and I find your style increasingly sharpened .. We recognize immediately your paw and this series is no exception to the rule.
I wish more generally to thank you for the advice you give and that allowed us to advance the practice of photography ..
Just a quick question .. : What is the profile that you use most often on your device (Standard, Neutral, ...)? I saw that you develop most often on Capture a V4 and I do not think the software takes into account the settings box, but this is something that interests me as well .. tt
For my part, I discovered the curves that are perfectly suited to the D2X D300 for everything related to skin tones (your specialty ..).
And thank you again soon.

you're really strong.
Bravo!
I wish I had your technique

It is always clean with a beautiful light, but the fact that you put the pictures this time clearly shows that you tend to stay in your booties framing examined
.
Or ... you missed a few degrees of angle and you tended to look to expand?
I think it looks more and more dynamic to have some penchages in a series, to integrate more elements in the diagonal as well, but now it almost seems that a majority of the pictures are, almost as if you had worked on autopilot
anyway I think you're at your best when you get more danger on methods, more unusual stuff, then this aspect lacking in your shots

Superb. We believe it. This article has plunged me in your tutorial on the photo of the evening. It reminded me how you managed to get this effect of drunk guy

geal_nc: thank you! A good "trick" to have bright pictures and very noisy is always trying to expose to the right (in the limit of burnt).
delphine: thanks!
alain: You're right, it's often too focused, I think qu'inconsciement, I try to fill up my connection with people and light, if I offsets my subjects I find myself with other people on the picture, if I frame in a conventional manner I lose a bit of ambient light, it's definitely something I have to watch for my next blankets to avoid the systematic side
PBGalerie.ch: Thank you!
nawack: yep, I'll join you on your remark, the fact is that the scene was high vis a vis the track, so difficult to get all
skal: Thank you!, to keep a watch out 800 isos I have had enough light (and therefore remain at an acceptable speed) that allow me to. Light and decor were well worked, the organizers are still putting the package and it shows in the images. Otherwise yes the picture is of me
sofa: The mirano is a place to remember for many of us entrre
Matib: Level box I'm all the balloons (contrast, saturation, sharpness) it is useless because C1 does not retain the settings, but it gives me an idea of what I will do as C1
Thierry S: Thank you!
krysalia: Yep you're right for the frame bent (see note to Alain), no ACTUAL endangered, there is a certain expectation level images for the organizers, but I'm still pleased with the portraits has open without flash
Bertrand: Thanks!

Hello Benjamin,
I regularly visit your site for several months. You're all just HUGE! amateur photographer since 3 years I find more information, more inspiration on your site in the press! I am there every day!
However I have a question that torments me for several weeks ... How did you do to have such contrasting images and saturated? You are using a polarizing filter? It's THAT RESULT I'm looking for since I hack my SLR. Your pictures are recognizable at first glance, it looks like a "signature", especially in portraits. What is your secret??
Between your pictures and mine is a bit like the clowns of the pub for laundry. And I am the sad clown and washed!
Jibé a French fan.

Well, Ben is always full in the eyes. I hope you are well paid in your box because you are one of the best photographer in europe ... lol
Ok I do too much, whatever. By against big question, I want to go with a FF 5D Mark II and I saw that you had the Tokina 12-24mm supposed to be reserved for the APS-C should explain myself ...
The greater part of the portraits are done in 50 or 85mm? because you had to be damn near people? is that a 100mm 2.8 macro is possible for you for portraits?
October 8th, 2008 at 2:00
"Matib: Level box I'm all the balloons (contrast, saturation, sharpness) it is useless because C1 does not retain the settings, but it gives me an idea of what I will do in C1"
When you say the bottom ball is like 7/7 or 4-5/7? for contrast, saturation, sharpness?
October 10th, 2008 at 10:22
williboy: but clear!
jibe: Should I think about making more regular then maj
For the contrast I added just under Capture One, all is to have a light that lends itself! add contrast to a flat picture, the picture will remain "flat". The key is to carefully observe the light! the pleasure
Masden: We will not exaggerate eh
, The Tokina is actually a DX lens, it is still usable on the FF between 20 and 24 mm, I Projecte to invest in the wide angle nikon home very soon
For portraits, I like being near people, in terms of focus anything is possible but I prefer the 50 and 85 (just a matter of taste and proximity).
To preview images in the case I think is 100% everywhere, it's just to get an overview of the knowledge that my image C1 cancels all the settings box
October 10th, 2008 at 3:46
As jibe, it is very likely to ask the secret of Benjamin on the quality of his photos, contrast and color.
I just type all the comments of this genius of the image. Can not find a track.
a touch more contrast, a hint of saturation least 20 minutes for 200 photos on C1 and voila!
Nah, nah, nah ...
there is something else! to concentrate too much about ...
I have the answer:

benjamin BROLET does not exist!
PhaseOne editor (C1) and Nikon have teamed up to hire the best photographers of parties, portraits, interiors, reportage, landscape, ... then the best graphic designers, retouchers ... to give us these images.
Believe me, so much talent in one person, additionally young and self-taught, it does not exist.
Besides have you ever met? ...

hello Ben,
how is it possible to see your Exif on photos? (I'm running xp and internet explorer)
thank you to you
