Pictures of Scotland

July 14th, 2008

scotland

Back from a short week restorative Scotland I offer a small series with predominantly bulk landscape menu.

The landscape is an area I have said too little explored until now. I took the hardware level with the D3 as optics: 16mm, 12/24 Dx, 50mm, 85mm and 80/200 all housed in a Lowepro CompuTrekker home.

avec de petites ouvertures. In the end I realize that a D80 with a 18/200 would have been much more appropriate, almost all the images were taken at 200 iso with small openings. Landscape Research is mainly the large depth of field and exposure time have seldom care (thanks to the tripod).

m'a donc permis d'embraser le plus grand champs possible avec la contrainte de bien respecter les lignes d'horizon pour éviter la déformation inhérente de l'objectif. In this case I did not have a true wide angle, the 12/24 is a DX lens and can be used that from 20mm fisheye has allowed me to engulf the largest possible fields with the constraint of complying with the horizon lines to avoid the inherent distortion of the lens.

I intend to complete this post in the coming days with some tips on the trip to Scotland with few images to illustrate this information.

Feel free to send me your comments and questions!

It's not bad at all, we actually feel a little less comfortable in this kind of exercise but for a start it's still very good.

  2. alain Says:

    : Twisted:

you're really good at all, you, it's frustrating : Evil:

Give me your eye : Grin:

  3. delphine Says:

When you have good taste, was of good taste and this is your case. In addition you're gifted, it bothers me - jealousy ;)
Nice shots! Some leave me with marble (and the two late or there's too much sky)
    But congratulations anyway!!

  4. MickymX Says:

Ha yeah great to see Ben in another register. And as David: you feel it (yet) in your element. A separate domain. But hey it's okay, you're doing well anyway, your pictures are beautiful colors (including the lighthouse).
Question: I've seen pictures in 25sec ... Exif filter gray or bug?
    Question subs: Edinburgh?

  5. stephane Says:

For my part: LONG LIVE THE N & B.

    Nice shots, again.
    Congratulations

  6. skal Says:

Finally some new pictures on one of my favorites! Thank you RSS feeds.
Another series that demonstrates your mastery of light, contrasts, colors and framing, short of the photo : Wink:
The one with the lighthouse and those with the bridge are the ones I like best after a "first reading". All those with whom you have rightly used the reflections are gorgeous too.
We feel your touch so special, especially in color, contrast, just enough saturation. Thou hast as usual imported raw in C1?
Another quick question: you do a lot of sorting? Faced with such beautiful landscapes with lights like we should have a hard time not too strafe?
It makes you want to go! Once again congratulations!

  7. Alain Says:

Very nice set, it makes you want to go!

  8. Andy Says:

    Hello Ben,

Finally, I decided to leave a comment, since the time I visit your site (D70 forum, that date).

I am always in awe of your series, and there, even for the landscape, which is not your specialty, the quality is impressive.

I have a few questions if I may:

    1) do you push your emphasis on the foreground (the textures are perfect vraiments)?

    2) for yarns on the water, do you use a neutral density filter ND8 kind, or do you trigger when the scene is not lit, or two?

    In any case, congratulations!

    @ + + +

  9. Benjamin | photob Says:

    David: Thank you!

Alain: I keep my eyes not myopic!

delphine: Yep, the series (which is not really a) may be a little uneven :)

MickymX: Actually what is frustrating about this kind of road trip is that you roll a max and you have little time to ask you and your framing work. There I often find beautiful scenery but usable light
And indeed it has some slow exposures (so no bug Exif)

    Stephanie: Thank you!

skal: Glad to read that people use the flow :) thank you for your comment.

For raw, it's C1 but this time with photoshop behind to lead certain areas and mixing layer for the Black and White :)

    Alain: :)

    Andy: Thanks for your questions:

1 - No, but considering all the openings of the images is very clear!

2 - I had a ND400 filter but I realized the images was dusk, the filter was no longer necessary!

  10. lomoseb Says:

Beautiful shots but I'll do a little boring.
the # 1: The colors are tops but it looks a tad.
the # 2: It looks really :) and I would add a bit of vignetting to close in the absence of the foreground.
the # 3,4,5: This is a little tight for my taste as framing.
    the # 6: it lacks a foreground.
    The # 7: Tip top!
The # 8: nice but not great
the # 9: Geniale! but some multiply on houses because they attract the eye too.
    the # 10: perfect
the # 11: I will make a crop on the bottom to stay strictly in the ratio 1/2 1/2 because it is really great.
the # 12: shades are real but it lacks horizonlatité I find.
the # 13: color texture but too top 1/2 1/2 components
    the # 14: well well.
the # 15: nice symmetry I retraiterai a hair on the top to bring out the stones.
    the # 16 & 17: nice symmetry too. I just vignetterai
the # 18 & 19: that of mutton is nice but I find the framing a bit tight.
the # 20: the colors are tops, a little dust on the way, a bit more prominent.
the # 21: ca nickel although looks a pet '
the # 22: rays give a lot of tension, trying to recover was to be a little matter of the highlights
the # 23: a little corner to bring out the maer behind (I guess)
    the # 24: a more panoramic crop.
    the # 25: perfect
the # 26: ditto thank you seagull ;)
    the # 27: a small crop down
the # 28: framing a little tight for my taste

That is my subjective review :) and as usual we recognize the vices of the Father for the sins he condemns!

  11. 50mm Says:

Fortunately you do not feel yourself comfortable with the landscape if not what would it be?!
Personally, I have nothing particular to add except that the pictures are great and the country is said to be beautiful!

  12. Benjamin | photob Says:

lomoseb: No. You just say it's still beautiful : Grin: !

I laugh, I share your observations quite well, the penchage on some images often comes from the fact that I was a 16mm fisheye and the D3 does not have cadrillage, the lesser degree of side is quite often fatal to fish, the com 50/50 ditto, if your horizon is not right in the center of deformation is very present.

Good will hop over to apologize to a 5cents passont comments comments

    the # 1: we agree.
the # 2: Personal has the second reading I find it a bit empty without interest.
the # 3,4,5: I value the texture of the rock with water that separates fairly well the volumes.
    the # 6: we agree.
The # 7: My masking is a bit rude
    The # 8: we agree.
    the # 9: we agree.
    the # 10: we agree.
the # 11: we agree but I do not like cropper in my images
the # 12: oh no it goes well for me like that!
the # 13: we agree (my limitation of fish on the horizon)
    the # 14: we agree.
    the # 15: we agree.
the # 16 & 17: a force everywhere see the vignetting (the foul LR) I tend to limit the above :)
    the # 18 & 19: question of taste :)
the # 20: the full version if I type a layer threshold and I push I realize it is high time that I clean my sensor!.
the # 21: we agree (my limitation of fish on the horizon)
    the # 22: we agree.
the # 23: no I like this little PDC that hints the background :)
the # 24: The first plan is a bit messy, but I do not like the crops!
    the # 25: we agree.
the # 26: I actually like the reminder of the seagull
the # 27: the lower part is actually more interesting
the # 28: I could not really do otherwise if I wanted to stay in the graph

50mm: Thank you! the country is beautiful :)

  13. G Says:

    things change eh :)
and it is not bad either, although I have seen either full color or in black and white ... if any ... All in color ;)

    Finally, it concerns only me!

    ez,
    G

  14. David Says:

I return to the problems of backgrounds who lean : Grin:

There is not an electronic level on the D3 it could be useful in this situation, right?

  15. Andy Says:

Ben thank you for these answers. : Smile:

  16. ph @ Zer Says:

Well I'm probably right audience or perhaps a less sophisticated eye, but I found this excellent series, it even gave me want to go ... so for me the goal is reached (even if n was not your goal) : Smile:

  17. Klesk Says:

Glad to read that I am not alone in disliking the crops! I finally feel alone in some forums : D .

Bravo for the rest. The series is indeed uneven but considering the quality of the best, the worst is none the less nice to watch.

  18. Pingui Says:

Still a very beautiful series that provides an escape :) Bravo

PS: could you tell me that plugin you are using to generate the display of serial long horizontal banner? I've seen the process on other sites but I can not find the info.

  19. kapoue Says:

how did you manage to have colors like that?

you have a polarity or is the post processing I AYou it's been several times that I have the same test that you made with nx but without me you can enlighten succet hoooooooo master

  20. Benjamin | photob Says:

ph @ Zer: Pictures are good but as pointed out certain points are perfectible lomoseb :)

Klesk: Personal everyone does what they want, personally I like my images to fit the shot to take advantage of a maxium resolution offered by housing :) , And then landscape it's not like I was trying to follow a chevreil flying, I have time to think and ask my framing :)

Pingui: Thanks for posting this series is a fairly simple script that someone has helped me realize it is not opensource although quite a few people have come to retrieve it from my site

kapoue: it's just the light, I have other pictures of Scotland scenery with equally interesting but decidedly flat light that ultimately does not work :) For the pola no way to get on the fisheye!

  21. Phenri Says:

I discovered this site, along with this series. Site full of valuable tips, well organized and well written too, which does no harm, and in addition, thank you for being as transparent and let the Exif.

But above all, what mastery already! Hat, and the Scottish series, I will not be picky, it's just beautiful!

    Congratulations again.

  22. XLR8 Says:

    nice set as usual!
but the tone D3 sensor is full of dust!
looks at the sky in the photo just after the two animals ...
and more as you closed your f-stop of, is clearly visible here.
I met here with my D3 back to the Alps in April ...
I cleaned the sensor with Eclipse, and since it's going better ...

  23. Oli Says:

And here's another great series! I read a fair amount of comment on the fact that you're not comfortable with the landscape photos I found ... Ben "Ben Brand". Vignetting, sharpness, color and sharpness explosive ...

Again I am a fan and if you're not comfortable in the landscape but like to be as uncomfortable as you : Wink:

  24. gael_nc Says:

Very interesting series, I find the frames very successful. I remain, very admiration for your photo sets. Although I have not sufficiently practiced eye, I find this series as all the other beautiful. Keep it up. And if you have two minutes, take a walk on the site of a friend, http://www.patricemorin.com . The invitation is also valid for everyone. see you soon and good luck.

  25. ksh Says:

    Hi Ben,

As usual, you're doing well :) And, even in an area that you think "you've never practiced a lot" :)
I admire your talent and your ability to adapt very fast ... it makes you dream.
Development level, I have not read all the comments above but you're still under NX or C1? Are there any localized retouching?

    I love u Ben : D

    A +

  26. Benjamin | photob Says:

Phenri: Thank you! I like it when people leave their ca Exif can sometimes understand a decision :)

XLR8: Yep the sensor is obviously pretty dirty, I get very raremment above 5.6 so most of the time I did not realize it :) I would go for a walk in the SAV

Oli: When I say I am not at ease, I try not to play a modest 2Cents wrong, most of the time I work with low PDC and a fairly tight. In this case the challenge was for me to fulfill my part and work with such great depth, the beautiful light it starts to go :)

gael_nc: Thank you, I'd do a little tour on the website of your friend ;)

ksh: Never NX, too slow (but super good) then C1 complement with photoshop to "mount" my sky especially in B / W

  27. Benny Says:

    Congratulations Ben,
it makes you want to go.
Small question, how we make to see the EXIF?
    : Sad:

  28. BZH Matt Says:

Unfamiliar landscapes? And well, what would have been otherwise!? ! : Mrgreen:
Bravo, I gasped, I honestly want to check it out!

  29. Roman Lhuissier Says:

hello ben and bravo, great series, one with the lighthouse surpassing the others ... I must say I'm jealous : Twisted: I thought bringing back beautiful pictures of Scotland (I go from 26/07 to 02/08), you've pulled the rug out from under! I have pressure, there! bluffing :!:

  30. Phial Says:

    Beautiful pictures!
I just wanna know how you do for the river spun without being over-exposed?

  31. Dati Says:

"The landscape is an area I have said too little explored until now"

You're nice, you leave us a tit something where we can perhaps cartoning us too?
    : Neutral:

  32. bebop Says:

    Congratulations for your pictures!
I was wondering, since you often with your mops D3, you're not interrese the D700?

  33. Metabisulfide Says:

    : Mrgreen:
What beautiful discoveries on this site.
    Congratulations and good luck

: Evil: Well then, where are you Ben? That's what I'm looking forward to read more me! And I must not be the only one! : Mrgreen:

  37. Boisard Julien Says:

That the gentleman has not told you, is that it will soon be published in the next magazine "images & Nature" by one of his pictures of Scotland. Not bad for a beginner in landscape : Mrgreen:

  38. Guido Says:

    Especially the landscape continues! (Also)

There is a beautiful exhibition of Josef Hoflehner at the Young Gallery in Brussels. To see! http://www.josefhoflehner.com/portfolios.html
    http://www.younggalleryphoto.com/

There are also a lot of good landscape photographers on "Deviantart" per ex: http://lucias-tears.deviantart.com/art/Ancient-Pathways-49768474

  39. photob.be | Benjamin BROLET | Photographer Brussels »Blog Archive» Logic and backstage Says:

[...] Julien kindly sent me my image of the island of skye published in the magazine picture and [...]

  40. Cedric Says:

    Hello Benjamin.

Even if you write you little explored in this area, I take my hat off. Either this is the place that makes your photos are really beautiful, but I rather think it's the photographer who did a good job ;-)
    Congratulations Benjamin.
