Marriage Fatima Gabriel
June 22nd, 2008
Fatima and Gabriel have contacted me on the advice of Dati (faithful reader of the blog according to him
) To cover their wedding this Saturday, June 21, 08.
We met for the first time to determine the needs of each milestone, which allows good "feel" people and their expectations: No kitsch, no selective desaturation (it's good I think it's atrocious, some the image in color and the other in black and white), full of life with a photo reportage maintaining aesthetic approach.
I always have trouble with the wedding photos some photographers with well-typed images with married head in a wooden frame with inside the frame color and the rest in black and white, extended married in the grass with the bouquet in color and the rest in b / w shots of flash that crush all, blown highlights, the crappy rendered sepia yellow piss ect ...
I arrived Saturday morning at 8 o'clock in the morning hairdresser / makeup to make a full report of the day, I do not see the cover of a marriage otherwise it long past time we tell a story here, with married can "feel" the atmosphere to restore it faithfully is witnessed special moments that we try to capture more than just.
Equipment level I left the big camera bag (CompuTrekker with mac in) that during my last wedding I was more embarrassed than anything else. I opted for my trusty slingshot that allows me quick access to the hardware. In order to better distribute the load and to increase the ability and practicality of all I bought the belt at lowepro.
Level clothes I totally dropped the suit pants and shined molières, I opted for the big fat pants pockets (very convenient to lose its objots small caps and other "stuff") and good shoes light and comfortable hiking.
If you will spend 16 hours a shooter all be dressed accordingly. Another advantage is that people do not take you for a guest and you can charge you more easily.
Well to be honest it was more like a para mission but it has the merit of making people laugh (which is good for portraits and helps break the ice)

Level material: D3, the 16mm 2.8 (the new kid), the 12/24 on 17/55 2.8, the 50 1.4 and 85 1.4, a note that I could do all the reporting on a single battery. The 17/55 has served me for 3 images, 12/24 for group portraits, I may be too used the fish (I of course asked for permission to married before everyone n ' not want to have a good many distorted images) the lack of excitement in my new toy. The 50 and 85 accounted for 80% of my images.
I took my flash that I have used that from 10:40 p.m., the D3 really can work in difficult conditions.
For memory cards I took a risk, I went with two cards with 4 gigabytes in the housing (D3 can insert two cards simultaneously) which allows me a maximum of 620 images in total. Finally the decision has paid off, I spent my day cream to go essentials.
I imported 620 images to remove only 15 (plus duplicates Stripped as images, screen D3 enables true skimming). As usual I worked in RAW, no cropping, I added a bit of contrast in Capture One and exported in JPEG.
I hear a lot of photographers who spend hours behind the screen for this report it will take me 60 minutes to make my settings and my machine has 30 minutes to export the images as jpeg format. The white balance is very faithful to the D3 I hardly had to adjust. Some images deserve some corrections but it will upon request of the couple.
An example of before and after (so just a little more contrast)

I chose to share with you 135 images, this is too much, but it is representative of this story 16 hours. Share 10 good pictures of a wedding is in my opinion quite easy in life it is always possible to get some good pictures. Here I want to emphasize the narrative and constant aspect of the work.

great report! and good report!
fisheye photos are wonderful, I love it! (I also regularly abuse), the portraits are always so full of life! vraimant a very beautiful story, a continuation of what you usually do!
DC is great!
June 23rd, 2008 at 1:06
Very nice series. It is not unpleasant to look at your pictures, and I like the way story.
By cons for once you really perverted me. I eyeing more towards a 85mm 1.4 and forcing a D3.
June 23rd, 2008 at 1:49
Yeah I prefer it, life, color, I think your frames are treated compared to the last series (you probably had more room to move around which is normal).
A nice story about a day, much more interesting to show more classics.
It is a very tiring exercise I know for already two marriages and I must admit it's hard to stay focused at the end of the day, didst well out bravo.
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:16
yes
excellent work, really see eye! you're laché you with fish lol I love that the church where such focal tt takes its meaning in my opinion ... careful not to abuse it out, but I understand you lol
Bravo!
June 23rd, 2008 at 8:08
As always with you, photographs of natural and full of happiness. The portraits are beautifully lit.
What strikes me the most and I like the highest point is the atmosphere 'good boy' and relaxed predominates.
Still a great job, away from the usual clichés weddings.
June 23rd, 2008 at 8:19
It is true that when I see your wedding photos and those made by the "pros" for my friends wedding ... it is puzzling though.
Maybe because you know what is new for you and you still have that cool, but mostly I think it's a state of mind.
If I see you're a man of taste since it has the same t (lafraise ...)
June 23rd, 2008 at 8:40
Rambo is in the place, but Goku is never far from the party (eating?) KITCHENSHAVE

I say "Aaaaaah!"
Less convinced by the exercise of the nightclub, even if you're super're well out, here we find the emotion and Ben method.
The horizontal reading your viewer lends itself very well to the side "I tell a story." The final 135 pictures without fatigue as it is varied.
You spend the fisheye at 50mm, 50mm fisheye by two turns and U-turns by your 85mm, suddenly the angles are varied and have different dynamics.
Technical side. This is lumieux (co'd'hab), it's full of emotions (married will be happy), it's clean without being stored (135 pictures? I have told much less). Mission accomplished for our commando Bengohan
ps: nice house with white walls! Guy go! Me and the last (first
) I had covered worthy curtains combi ski 30s walls.

Hi,
Excellent work!
Beautiful results ... natural and expressive.

Once again beautiful boulo. I still love that made very pure colors (you use a particular curve or what is the normal rendering of D3?) And light. However there is just one element that bothers me once
. On some portrait (superb incidentally), I'll put a little bit of correction because it really is not flattering when you have a lot of dive. It is not a question of either smooth skin like the magazines, but only fired a few imperfections
June 23rd, 2008 at 9:54
yeeeep! really top this story and this blog moreover, found no best picture! continuous LKV me to dream!
June 23rd, 2008 at 10:25
I confirm I am loyal reader Nondidjuuu!
And I also confirmed the clothes ... my little brothers slipped my ear when we were still in the town, "he kidding your friend dressed as Rambo there!"
At the same time I better understand what you have told me to lie down on the floor when I see the photo in the "trampoline" with children.
In any case like this has to be said, 135 pictures can not see through. Well it's not very objective either on my part ...
But in any case good job once again and Fati is delighted. But hey, that you should probably already be aware
June 23rd, 2008 at 10:36
Incidentally, I see that you were in the next Yulbiz finally.
Pretty pictures Vintage Atomium
I was not able to go to the final.
Anyway, sorry to pollute the discution with photos that I hope will be another post.
Good work
June 23rd, 2008 at 10:38
Great series!
especially in the car is original
But a little too much for my taste Fisheye.
A small QTVR when caught in the crowd?
June 23rd, 2008 at 1:17
Somewhat the same point of view than Coniglio.
Less absorbed by your series on the nightclub in the church, I find more your "paw" on these beautiful wedding photos.
Light, framing the moments before ... more than you did a great job.
Some wedding photographers should emulate.
As for the choice of the fisheye, I regret a single picture: the bride under his helmet in the salon, if I find it perfect for this occasion.
My 15mm arrived, JEVAIS look for this week.
Congratulations Ben and thank you (and married) for us to share these photos.
Regarding the belt lowepro, I ogled over for my slingshot beginning to weigh heavy and not always practical to run his bag to retrieve something. But I was a little afraid of the adventurer with that size ... lol
Perhaps a future purchase ...
Was daring combat clothing to cover a wedding but ultimately good choice of work, as more convenient and comfortable to move.
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:08
Laurent Garnier: Hi Lawrence, thank you!
Dnicolas.FR: Should wait for the D700
David: Yep, the advantage to a wedding is actually that you can move you to search for your image, you can go to people without screaming!
benoitmuguet: thank you Benoit finally on the overall work I do not have much abused Fish
and then I fall too much in the next big nose, small eyes.
50mm: I tried to make the most of this day
pifgadget: To have met a few pros, this is much more a state of mind that fatigue in my opinion, I have seen pictures of pro absoluments superb and I saw things a shit. For the strawberry I remain a huge fan of their t'shirts
Coniglio: For the evening, I am happy with my pictures, but I am also well aware of the conditions
For the passage of focal during the marriage, it is quite complicated to manage, spend 50 to 16 to the board 85 is easy for the cocktail during the ceremony is much tighter! a second case as a small D700 would be welcome
Fred: Thank you
Klesk: No curves in the D3, I work in RAW
For selective corrections will be on request (and I personally do not think it is necessary
)
niktard: Thank Msieur!
Dati: Yep! ca was a pleasure to meet you
For the photo under the trampoline I almost eat my camera, lie below with kids who jump over you and misjudge the attention of the area ca could hurt! Fati looked very happy air!
I spent a Yulbiz but for 15 minutes I was too tired of marriage! The two pictures of the Atomium in the hallway are a little easier
benjamin ziegler: I just pushed the fish in this selection in the overall it is less present
Sophie: Thank you Sophie! good fun with your 15
The belt is ca top and distributes weight well, a good investment for me! For clothes is a real plus, it makes people laugh, ca commits the discussion (like the bowl of noodles) and ca can roll over without worry (a t-shirt is not a replacement mauvaiser idea for the evening)
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:33
For D700 I am skeptical because it's just a D3 without grip. So D3X: p: p
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:09
Yulbiz?
These are the pictures that you see on your home page?
They are superb.
You'll devote an article?
Ben goes for a ride on my blog from time to time to see the latest photos and series to give me your opinion.
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:09
At the risk of offending the "purists", I would just say it is good to see happy and friendly people .. Yeah what this superb story almost makes me want to get to know these people and I .. think this is one of the objectives to be achieved by a good photographer (of course the atmosphere is festive, but sometimes we are quite surprised at the choice of some ..) then no worries here, the atmosphere is great made and the memory is magnified by these cool pictures! Congratulations to you and bcp happiness to married who had reason to trust you ;-)
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:46
Impressive
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:55
Strongly agree with those who recognize you in this exercise rather than the nightclub.
I put myself in the place of the groom. P ... they should be happy to have such beautiful memories.
And say ... luckily you do not have to sign a document image rights as the Marathon Fnac because you could have put a printer in your shorts to Lara Croft
June 23rd, 2008 at 9:37
What more if the photos are sublime. It's a shame that I do not intend to get married because otherwise I would have thought about you for the pictures. I'll come to regret not want to get married.
June 23rd, 2008 at 11:13
Wow all this already how to read ...
So as Coniglio, the Popvert series ... left me a bit unsatisfied. This is not your taff I like better. I'm not saying if you do not know how else it would be very well ...
When I see this series, I said to myself: "HAaaaaaaa someone who has the same vision of a reportage wedding mine" .. I never covered or done anything of the kind, but I've thought about it by seeing the other do. And there it is far from 10,000 (in your series) poses where we see the last family. It takes but there is not that much. There are married but they will see all their lives (married: p), they want to remember the people who were there moments. In short I'm a fan, your light management is to go (grrr this inside all white humm), expressions, patterns, the bride all smiles. Nickel (slightly abused the fish for my taste but it was now or never ^ ^)
I remain a fan of your taff.
June 24th, 2008 at 1:39
Picture a little easier but it certainly always throws avecun wide angle in this type of staircase
Otherwise too delighted to have met you
June 24th, 2008 at 9:56
just as already reported by some.
I wasn a big fan of the last series that I found borrowed (taken in hand the new toy.?).
But found the approach and the quality of images that I love.
Congratulations! A beautiful story.
June 24th, 2008 at 10:44
I found the last great series and this one too!
Beautiful story, people are beautiful, happy everything right!
Hmmm ... these biscuits, yum, a real suplice for exhilés my way!
June 24th, 2008 at 6:32
Series is very clean.
As usual, "very Brolet" they will say.
Although I must admit that I do not adhere specifically to your description here, especially on the part of the work of "mass" because I think it's relatively limited.
I left that dream about owning a case such as the D3 and a premium lens that to have fun with it at all hours of day and night.
Anyway, still very nice here.
A older, they should cross at the occasion,
we both Brussels - although I admit I was a little dropped p'tit side events in Brussels this year because I'm super often in England -
s'capte on one of these four, facebook, flickr, ... We'll see.
A sprig

Hi Benjamin,
a beautiful series full of life ... it's good to see pictures if "dynamic"
. The groom had to be delighted ...
I hang at least some fish curiously, but at least it deserves to be diversified

June 24th, 2008 at 10:29
I think this is the first time I post on your site, though it's been almost two years that I have your work .. And yes, it was still the old design I also liked
It's funny, I bought 2 weeks ago the D3 also my first marriage (that of a friend) on Saturday, I was able to test this beautiful case and my optical (quite close to yours)
You draws something great! Technically really good!
I really like your way of working, simple and effective. Little post production - lots of spontaneity.
Clear that there is the button "Brolet"
I was wondering something ....
BUT HOW DO YOU TAKE FOR OPTICAL TTE THESE ON YOUR BELT? Pictured above you have still not all the optical so??
And continues, you really rocks!
David
June 25th, 2008 at 11:26
Very nice series
I always go to you or your request color
As much as I understand your pictures technical side DOF white balance, etc. ..
But the colors?
Rebuke you color curves in Photoshop?
Very nice rendering
Jo.

Sublime series again! What art and what mastery of light, it is a feast for the eyes.
If I hear around me someone who intends to marry photographer I know what the counselor!
This is a wonderful gift for the bride and groom, this series of beautifully out of the ordinary wedding albums that you can sometimes see that are often stereotyped with clichés and "poses too asked." You really have nothing to envy to what a lot of pros in stories of weddings, but often too difficult topic marked ...
Here one feels natural, it seems to be that wedding photos are taken at the right moment, framing leave dreamers and light sparkles in the eyes.
Personally I think the fisheye was used wisely, with talent, especially for photos trampoline and those of groups: well done! As for the 50mm and 85mm, thou art become throughout your series and your progress master "black belt" in absolute minimum, Nikon should pay you royalties
You really always great ideas, and so much talent! And especially the kindness to share your way of working and your tips and tricks (cf. belt, pants pocket, the monopod in the series on how to Belgium) not to mention the tutorials.
I allow myself a few questions:
- For color do you add (or remove) the saturation in Capture One?
- You add contrast in Capture One: nothing else?? (Sharpness example)
Thank you in advance and congratulations!
PS: I was a bit long but difficult to make it shorter so I'm a fan of your art.
June 26th, 2008 at 24:42
Nice job.
I'm not too hot on the fish.
I wonder if using a 14mm would not have been happier.
D3 this beautiful beast, I tested a Leica M8 with Noctilux which opened in f1, an interesting experience but I think I'll still to D3.
June 26th, 2008 at 2:42
It is true that there are LOTS of fish ... but otherwise, apart from that and work offered belies the D3 and its pilot, I take my ticket good wedding photographer for a few years ... like that between Lenny and Madonna ... if the feeling is good, you're a busy weekend ... more
June 26th, 2008 at 10:41
Dnicolas.FR: is the case that I expected, being impatient nature I fell for the D3
Sophie: Yulbiz, basically a web2.0 conference which featured new products and allow bloggers to meet, it happened to the Atomium in Brussels, so as not standard on the subject I just did two images a rose with fish hand, nothing very thoughtful as shooting
A first image

A second image
http://www.photob.be/HFR/2008/atoredweb.jpg
Bafo: Thank Bafo, the important thing is the satisfaction of married (outside of the photographer) and in this case the first mail Fatima was very positive
pixel: Thank you!
Bertrand: Made chi ... Fnac for the marathon, I also wanted to participate
Phazer:
MickymX: Second all this how to comment
, I assure you, to have talked to several people who are, or will marry you is not bad to share this approach
Dati: But clear! the fun!
Mike: thank you!
Delphine: I like the pictures of details, ca allows a little air a series and the album it can be used to place background images
G: Thanks! Yep, when you want!
Davidone: Thank you!
David Marescaux: So glad that D3
! for our optical friends, I used mainly 50 and 85 and the fish, the rest in the bag
Jo: The colors that the expense of light and image building, if I have a light background or a dark background for example. For this series I just added a little contrast on my images in Capture One, take each image in Photoshop is impracticable (620 photos, 2 minutes per picture, you see the thing
)
Skal: Thank you, I tend to be very critical of my work, I know what I want and I'm far, the technical side is now I have to continue the creative level, relationship to advance
To answer your questions:
- I added contrast and I somewhat reduced saturation (increase the contrast increases sat)
- The sharpness I do not in Capture One must sharpeniser depending on the purpose of the image, I export my images with C1 with the default settings, then I resize with irfanview before putting on the web
ps: with pleasure!
Neele: This is in my opinion a matter of taste
some like it, others not
14 also seems very interesting!
Fred:
June 27th, 2008 at 2:25
Your story is really more than excellent! You do a lot better than many professional photographers. It's really a great job. Congratulations!
June 29th, 2008 at 4:37
Very nice story indeed!
and beautiful mastery of color!
I just found that there are "many portraits" and ultimately too little story really, but very good!
I was just waiting "to better" knowing a little your images!
It's already great!
June 30th, 2008 at 11:48
Hello Benjamin,
I see that everything has been said ... so I add just bravo! grooms to be really happy with their photos!
@ Soon
June 30th, 2008 at 9:54
nice set, but I have trouble with the fish eye is very suitable in my opinion this type of reporting, you took risks, it is laudable, but too large deformations break a little consistency report.
with DxO or another, you should correct here happen better I think ...
June 30th, 2008 at 9:55
for contrast, in lab mode or with an adjustment layer curves brightness mode, you do not touch the saturation!
June 30th, 2008 at 9:57
That said we leave the kitsch wedding photos you see in the shops of photographers ç'est on!
one feels the modern photographer with fresh ideas!
frankly correct these distortions and it will be spot on!
June 30th, 2008 at 10:06
Gabriel: thank you!
Chris: The selection actually understand a lot of portraits, but somehow it's kind of the point of wedding pictures
Olive: thank you
XLR8: I assume the fish, selection rebuke many, the complete series the fish is more discreet.
In contrast yes indeed hear but under open photoshop and this is clearly against productive, playing with layers of 10 photos why not on 620 images, I forget (even in batch
)
For deformations as described above, were married hot, if I use a fish that's just to get that coverage and deformation. Use a fish and then straighten as work directly to the wide
July 1st, 2008 at 4:16
What all these colors?
It's Christmas on the site?
July 1st, 2008 at 3:04
I play a little with the site
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:10
Hello!
I find it very nice that you answers to everyone.
So here's another question: what you used artificiele light on this series, or you worked with only the light that there was?
Thank you!
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:09
We would not have hoped for better as wedding photos. Benjamin has exceeded our expectations. It is now the official photographer of the family
Dati: Thank you for having advised!
July 3rd, 2008 at 12:42
Oooops I just note that the answer to my question already been written on your "post".
Thank you so
July 5th, 2008 at 24:17
Thank you for posting the full report it is always interesting to see the "available" full
July 6th, 2008 at 2:26
Still a good job Ben, expressions, compositions (even in a story you managed to get the idea) and exposure management, really beautiful, you continues to be one of the photographers who amazes me every new series ...
Good luck to you.
Romain
July 13th, 2008 at 4:50
Congratulations again for the photos,
I just saw the full set of 600 photos last night
Very goooodd work. I bow
July 22nd, 2008 at 11:37
I find your photos nickels I like them really well.
But on some (My personal opinion and nothing else), I would not have opened the same, but at the same time, I do not have a quarter of your talent.
Sailboat voilou and good luck to the married.
July 22nd, 2008 at 11:48
You do not use too much flash, do you have a specific reason? Certainly, natural light
July 23rd, 2008 at 1:45
When the light is good do nothing more.
However, it seems to me that the last are the flash, because Ben was in manual mode.
By the way Ben, always satisfied with your broadcaster?
July 24th, 2008 at 10:17
Antoine Magnier: Yep, it gives a good idea of all!
ksh: thank you!
Dati:
Manu: Yep, but as you say it is biased so a history of taste, for the flash as stated Gam when the light is good must not touch anything!
For the latest images (around the 23 hours I was actually flash)
Gam: Yep it is great! but I forgot it during this report ...
June 17th, 2010 at 24:08
Hello Benjamin,
As I count investire in fixed perspective, I am also looking for equipment to facilitate the objective chagement. For that I'm curious if you ever used your belt holder objective and, if appropriate, if you place the goals in with or without caps / hoods.
Greetings
Stéphane
June 17th, 2010 at 12:13
Yes I very often used for the purposes I'm not super careful, so sometimes yes sometimes no
June 17th, 2010 at 2:36
Thank you for the answer.
May 22nd, 2011 at 8:48
"Hardware Level: D3, the 16mm 2.8 (the new kid), the 12/24 on 17/55 2.8, the 50 1.4 and 85 1.4"
How do you use the 12/24 and 17/55 on a 2.8 D3 box? The D3 is a good full frame, is not it.
Thank you for the clarification.
