Fatima married Gabriel
June 22nd, 2008
Fatima and Gabriel contacted me on the advice of Dati (faithful reader of the blog according to him
) To cover their wedding this Saturday, June 21, 08.
It has been a first time to determine everyone's expectations, important step to the proper "feel" people and their expectations: No kitsch, no selective desaturation (they're not alone I find it atrocious, some of the color image and the other in black and white), photos full of life with a reportage approach preserving an aesthetic quality.
I always have a hard time with the wedding photos of some photographers with images much typed with married head in a wooden frame inside the frame color and the rest in black and white, the couple extended in the grass with bouquet in color and the rest b / w, shots flash crush everything, whites cramés, made the crappy, the sepia yellow piss ect ...
So I arrived Saturday morning at 8 o'clock in the morning at the hairdresser / makeup to achieve a full report of the day, I do not see the cover of a marriage otherwise, it tells a story here, the long time spent with bride and groom can "feel" the atmosphere to restore it faithfully we witness moments that we try to capture as accurately.
Level equipment I dropped the big camera bag (with the mac CompuTrekker in) that during my last wedding I was more embarrassed than anything else. I opted for my trusty slingshot, which allows me quick access to equipment. To better distribute the load and increase the ability and practicality of all I bought the belt from Lowepro.
Level clothes I totally dropped the suit trousers and highly polished molières, I opted for a big fat pants pockets (very useful for losing objots caps and other little "tricks") and good shoes light and comfortable touring.
If we're going to spend 16 hours a shooter as being dressed appropriately. The other advantage is that people do not take you for a guest and you can charge you more easily.
Well to be honest it was more like a paragraph on a mission but it has the merit of making people laugh (which is good for portraits and can opener)

Hardware: the D3, 16mm 2.8 (the new guy), the 12/24 on 17/55 2.8, 50 1.4 and 85 1.4, a note that I could do all the reporting on a single battery. The 17/55 has served me for 3 images, 12/24 for group portraits, I may be too used the fish (of course I asked for permission to married before, everybody n ' not want to have good pictures though distorted) the lack of excitement in my new toy. The 50 and 85 accounted for 80% of my images.
I took my flash that I used that as of 22:40, the D3 can really work in difficult conditions.
For memory cards I took a risk, I left with two cards of 4 gigabytes in the housing (the D3 is used to insert two cards simultaneously) which allows me a maximum of 620 images total. Finally the decision has paid off, I spent my day to go skim the basics.
I imported 620 images to remove only 15 (plus duplicates Stripped as images, screen D3 enables true skimming). As usual I worked in RAW, no cropping, I added a little contrast in Capture One and exported in Jpeg.
I hear many photographers who spend hours behind the screen, for this report I have had 60 minutes to my settings and my machine has 30 minutes to export the images in jpeg format. The white balance is very faithful to the D3 I have almost not fit. Some pictures deserve some corrections but it will on request of the couple.
An example of pre-post (so just a little more contrast)

I chose to share with you 135 images, this is too much, but it is representative of this story of 16 hours. Share 10 good pictures of a wedding is quite easy in my opinion, over time it is always possible to leave some good pictures. Here I wanted to emphasize the narrative aspect and constant work.

great story! and good account!
fisheye photos are wonderful, I love it! (I also regularly abused), the portraits are always so full of life! vraimant a very beautiful story, a continuation of what you usually do!
continuing it's great!
June 23rd, 2008 at 1:06
Very nice series. It's not unpleasant to look at your pictures, and I like the way story.
By against me for once you really perverted. I increasingly eyeing to a 85mm 1.4 and forcing a D3.
June 23rd, 2008 at 1:49
Yeah I prefer it, of life, colors, I find your frames are treated compared to the last series (surely you had more room to move which is normal).
A nice story about a day, much more interesting to show more of the classics.
This is a very tiring exercise I know to have already done two weddings and I must admit it's hard to stay focused at the end of the day, you did very well in congratulations.
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:16
yes
great job, really an eye to postpone! you are a coward with the fish lol I love that the output of this kind of church where tt is the focal sense to me ... be careful not to abuse it, but I understand you lol
Bravo!
June 23rd, 2008 at 8:08
As always with you, full of pictures and natural happiness. The portraits are beautifully lit.
What strikes me most and I enjoy the highest degree, the atmosphere is 'good boy' and relaxed predominates.
Still a great job, far from the stereotypes of traditional marriages.
June 23rd, 2008 at 8:19
It is true that when I see your wedding photos and those made by the "pros" to marriage of my friends ... it is puzzling nonetheless.
Maybe it's because you again for you and you still have this cool, but I think mostly it's a mindset.
Otherwise I see you are a man of taste since it has the same sweater (laFraise ...)
June 23rd, 2008 at 8:40
Rambo is in the place, but Goku is never far from the feast (eat?) KITCH

I say "Aaaaaah!"
Less convinced by the performance of the nightclub, even if you're in great out there one finds emotion and Ben method.
The horizontal reading of your viewer lends itself very well to the side "I tell a story." 135 pictures in the end without fatigue as it is varied.
You spend the fisheye at 50mm, the 50mm fisheye by two U-turns and detours for your 85mm, stroke of the viewing angles are varied and have different dynamics.
On the technical side. This is lightfull (co'd'hab) is full of emotions (the bride and groom will be happy), it's clean without being stored (135 images? I have said much less). Mission accomplished for our commando Bengohan
ps: nice house with white walls! Is lucky! Me and the last (first
) I had walls covered with curtains worthy of the combi ski 30s.
June 23rd, 2008 at 9:19
Hello,
Great job!
Nice results ... natural and expressive.
Hats off
A +

June 23rd, 2008 at 9:36
Once again beautiful boulo. I still love him very much that of pure color (you are using a particular curve or it is the normal rendering of D3?), And light. However there is just one element for once hurts me
. On some portrait (superb incidentally), I'll put a bit of a correction because it really is not flattering when you have a lot of sharpness. This is not to smooth the skin as the magazines, but only to transfer the few imperfections
June 23rd, 2008 at 9:54
yeeeep! really top this story and this blog incidentally, not found best photo! continuing to make me dream LKV!
June 23rd, 2008 at 10:25
I confirm I am a regular reader Nondidjuuu!
And I confirm also clothes ... my little brothers to me whispered to when we were still in the town, "he kidding your man dressed as Rambo there!"
At the same time I better understood what you told me to tell you lie down when I see the picture under the "trampoline" with children.
In any case like that was said, 135 pictures we see them pass. Well it's not very objective either on my part ...
But anyway great job once again and Fatima is pleased. But hey, you should probably already be aware
June 23rd, 2008 at 10:36
Incidentally, I see you've been in the next Yulbiz finally.
Nice photos of vintage atomium
I did not know going in the end.
In short, sorry to pollute the discution with photos that I hope will be another post.
Good work
June 23rd, 2008 at 10:38
Great series!
especially in the car is original
But a little too much Fisheye has my taste.
When will a small QTVR caught in the crowd?
June 23rd, 2008 at 1:17
Somewhat the same view as that of Coniglio.
Less absorbed by your series on the nightclub in the church, I found your more "touch" on these beautiful wedding photos.
Light, framing, moments before, ... you did more than an excellent job.
Some wedding photographers should build.
As for the choice of fisheye, I regret a single image: that of the bride under his helmet in the salon, if I find it perfect for the occasion.
My 15mm came, the JEVAIS look this week.
Congratulations and thank you Ben (and married) to share with us these photos.
Regarding the Lowepro belt, I ogled over because my slingshot beginning to weigh heavily and not always practical to run his bag to retrieve something. But I was hesitant to do with that fighter at the waist ... lol
Perhaps a future purchase ...
Was daring combat clothing to cover a wedding but ultimately good choice of work, as more convenient and comfortable to move.

Laurent Garnier: Hi Lawrence, thank you!
Dnicolas.FR: Should we wait for the D700
David: Yep, the benefit is actually a marriage that you can move you to get your image, you can go to people without screaming!
benoitmuguet: Benoit thank you, finally on the overall work I have not really abused the Fish
and then I fall too much in the next big nose, small eyes.
50mm: I tried to make the most of this day
pifgadget: To have met a few pros, it's much more a state of mind that fatigue in my opinion, I have seen pictures of pro absoluments superb and I saw stuff was crap. For the strawberry I remain a fan of their T'shirts
Coniglio: For the evening, I'm happy with my pictures, but I'm also well aware of the conditions
For the passage of focal lengths during the marriage, it is quite complicated to manage, spend 50 to 16 to return to the 85 is easy for the cocktail, during the ceremony is much more tense! a second box as a small D700 would be welcome
Fred: Thank you
Klesk: No curves in the D3, I work in RAW
For corrections to be selective on request (and personally I can not find this to be necessary
)
niktard: Thank msieur!
Dati: Yep! AC was a pleasure to meet you
For the photo under the trampoline I almost eat my case, be underneath with kids who jump over you and misjudge the intention of the surface ca could hurt! Fati looked very happy!
I passed a Yulbiz but for 15 minutes, I was too tired of marriage! The two photos of the Atomium in the corridor are a little easier
Benjamin Ziegler: I pushed a little fish in this selection, in the aggregate is less present
Sophie: Thank you Sophie! have fun with your 15
The belt is ca top and distributes the weight well, a good investment for me! As for clothing is a real plus, it makes people laugh, ca undertakes the discussion (much like the bowl of noodles) and ca can roll over without worry (a t-shirt is not a replacement mauvaiser idea for the evening)
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:33
For the D700 I am skeptical because it's just a D3 without grip. So D3X: p: p
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:09
Yulbiz?
These are the pictures that you see on your homepage?
They are superb.
You're going to devote an article?
Ben goes for a ride on my blog from time to time to see the latest series of photos and give me your opinion.
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:09
To shock the "purists", I would just say it is good to see people happy and friendly .. Yeah what, this superb documentary almost makes me want to get to know these people .. and I think this is one of the objectives to be achieved by a good photographer (of course the atmosphere is festive, but sometimes we are quite surprised by some choices ..) then no worries here, the atmosphere is great made and the memory is enhanced by these nice pictures! Congratulations to you and bcp married happiness to have been right to trust you ;-)
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:46
Impressive
June 23rd, 2008 at 7:55
Totally agree with those who recognize you in this exercise rather than the nightclub.
I put myself in the place of marriage. P ... they should be happy to have such beautiful memories.
And say ... fortunately you do not have to sign a document image rights as the Marathon Fnac because you could've put a printer in your shorts for Lara Croft
June 23rd, 2008 at 9:37
What can I say except that the photos are sublime. Too bad I do not intend to get married because otherwise I would have thought of you for the photos. I will come to regret not want to get married.
June 23rd, 2008 at 11:13
Wow all this already of how to read ...
So as Coniglio, POPVERT series ... left me somewhat unsatisfied. This is not your taff I like best. I do not say, if you did not do anything that would be very well ...
When I see this series, I think: "HAaaaaaaa someone who has the same vision of a reportage wedding than mine" .. I never covered or done anything like that but I've already thought of seeing another make. And there it is far from 10,000 (in your series) poses where we see the family past. It takes but it's not just that. There are married but they will see all their lives (married to: p), they want to remember people who were there moments. In short I am a fan, your light management is to go (grrr this humm all white inside), expressions, templates, the bride smiling. Nickel (slightly abused the fish for my taste but it was now or never ^ ^)
I remain a fan of your taff.
June 24th, 2008 at 1:39
Picture a little easier but it's certainly always throws avecun wide angle in this type of staircase
Otherwise I too delighted to have met you
June 24th, 2008 at 9:56
like already mentioned by some.
No I was not a fan of the series that I found last borrowed (taken into the hands of the new toy.?).
But the approach and found the image quality that I love.
Bravo! A beautiful story.
June 24th, 2008 at 10:44
I found the last great series and this one too!
Beautiful story, people are beautiful, happy everything right!
Hmmm ... these cakes, yum yum, a real Suplice exhilés for my kind!
June 24th, 2008 at 6:32
Series actually very clean.
As usual, "very BROLET" we'll say.
Although I must admit I did not adhere specifically to your description here, especially on the part of the work of "mass" because I find it relatively limited.
I remain more than dream about owning a case such as the D3 and a premium lens that to have fun with it at any time of day and night.
In short, still very nice here.
A older, they should cross at the occasion,
we're both in Brussels - although I admit I was a little bit dropped side events in Brussels this year because I'm so often in England -
we s'capte one of these four, facebook, flickr, ... We'll see.
A sprig
Ez,
G
June 24th, 2008 at 8:48
Hi Benjamin,
a nice series full of life ... it's nice to see pictures if "dynamic"
. The newlyweds had to be delighted ...
I hang at least some fish curiously, but at least it deserves to be diversified
@ +
D1
June 24th, 2008 at 10:29
I think this is the first time I post on your site, yet it has been nearly two years that I have your work .. And yes, it was still the old design that I liked also
It's funny, I bought 2 weeks ago the D3 also, my first marriage (that of a friend) this Saturday, I was able to test this case and my superb optical (fairly close to yours)
You pull into something great! Technically really well!
I really like the way you work, simple and effective. Little post production - a lot of spontaneity.
Clear that there are key "BROLET"
I was wondering something ....
BUT HOW DO YOU TAKE OUT THESE OPTICAL TTE ON YOUR BELT? Pictured above you have still not all optical so??
Continues, you really rips!
David
June 25th, 2008 at 11:26
Very nice series
I always wonder where you go out of your color
As I understand your pictures of the technical side, DOF white balance, etc. ..
But the colors?
Rebuke you color curves in photoshop?
Very nice rendering
Jo.
June 25th, 2008 at 3:19
Sublime series again! What art and what mastery of light, it is a feast for the eyes.
If I hear around me someone who intends to marry the photographer know what I advise!
This is a great gift for the newlyweds, this series comes out beautifully from the ordinary wedding albums that can sometimes see who are often stereotyped, with pictures and "ask too many questions". You really have nothing to envy to what a lot of pros in the stories of weddings, but often too difficult topic marked ...
Here one feels a natural, it seems to be in this marriage, the photos are taken at the right moments, framing and dreamers leave the light sparkles in their eyes.
Personally I think the fisheye was used wisely, with talent, especially for pictures of trampoline and those of groups: well done! As for the 50mm and 85mm, thou art become over sets of your progress and your master "black belt" at the very minimum, you should Nikon pay royalties
You have always really great ideas, and so talented! And especially the kindness to share the way you work and your tips and tricks (cf. belt, pants pocket, the monopod in the series on the way to Belgium) not to mention the tutorials.
Allow me a few questions:
- For the colors do you add (or remove) the saturation in Capture One?
- You add contrast in Capture One: nothing else?? (Eg sharpness)
Thank you in advance and congratulations!
PS: I was a bit long but difficult to get shorter as I am fan of your art.
June 26th, 2008 at 24:42
Good job.
I'm not keen on the fish.
I wonder if using a 14mm would not have been happier.
D3 this beautiful beast, I tested a Leica M8 with Noctilux which opened in f1, an interesting experience but I think I will still to D3.
June 26th, 2008 at 2:42
It is true that there bcp fish ... but otherwise, apart from that and work belies the D3 and offered his driver, although I will take my ticket for wedding photographer in a few years ... like this one between Lenny Madonna ... and if the feeling is good, you'll be a busy weekend ... more
June 26th, 2008 at 10:41
Dnicolas.FR: the box is what I expected, being impatient nature I fell for the D3
Sophie: Yulbiz basically a Web2.0 conference which featured new products and allowed bloggers to meet, this was the Atomium in Brussels has, therefore, not standard on the subject because I just did two pictures a show of hands with the fish, nothing very thoughtful as shooting
A first image
http://www.photob.be/HFR/2008/atoblueweb.jpg
A second image
http://www.photob.be/HFR/2008/atoredweb.jpg
Bafo: Thank Bafo, the important thing is the satisfaction of married (besides that of the photographer) and in this case the first mail of Fatima was very positive
pixel: Thank you!
Bertrand: Made chi ... Fnac for the marathon, I also wanted to participate
phazer:
MickymX: Second of all this how to comment
, I reassure you, for having talked to several people who are, or are getting married there is a lot to share this approach
Dati: But clearly! the fun!
Mike: thank you!
delphine: I like the photos of details, this allows a little air out a series for the album and this may serve to place background images
G: Thanks! Yep whenever you want!
Davidone: Thank you!
David Marescaux: So glad that D3
! for our friends the optical; I used mainly the 50 and 85 and the fish, the rest in the bag
Jo: The colors it depends on the light and the construction of the image, if I have a light background or a dark background for example. For this series I just added a little contrast on my images in Capture One, take each image in Photoshop is impracticable (620 photos, 2 minutes per image, you see the trick
)
Skal: Thank you!, I tend to be very critical of my work, I know what I want and I'm really far, the technical side is now I must continue at the creative level, relationship to advance
To answer your questions:
- I added contrast and I reduce the saturation a bit (increase the contrast increases sat)
- The sharpness I do not in Capture One must sharpeniser depending on the purpose of the image, I export my images with C1 with the default settings, then I resize with irfanview before putting on the web
ps: with pleasure!
Neele: This is in my view a matter of taste
some like, others not
14, seems to me also very interesting!

June 27th, 2008 at 2:25
Your story is really more than excellent! You're much better than many professional photographers. It's really a great job. Bravo!
June 29th, 2008 at 4:37
Very nice story indeed!
mastery and beautiful color!
I just find that there are "many portraits" and ultimately too little story really, but very good!
I was just waiting "to better" knowing a little your pictures!
It's already beautiful!
June 30th, 2008 at 11:48
Hello Benjamin,
I see that everything has been said ... I would add just so well done! grooms to be really happy with their photos!
@ Soon
June 30th, 2008 at 9:54
nice set but I struggle with the fish eye is not well suited in my opinion this type of reporting, you have taken risks, this is commendable, but the excessive deformations break some consistency reporting.
with DxO or other, you should correct, I think better happen here ...
June 30th, 2008 at 9:55
for contrast, or lab mode with a curves adjustment layer Brightness mode, you do not touch the saturation!
June 30th, 2008 at 9:57
That said it is beyond the kitsch wedding pictures you see in the shops of photographers, ç'est on!
we feel the modern photographer with fresh ideas!
corrects these distortions and frankly it will be spot on!
June 30th, 2008 at 10:06
Gabriel: thank you!
Chris: The selection actually understand a lot of portraits, but somehow it's kind of the point of wedding pictures
olivier: thank you
XLR8: I assume the fish, the selection by lot rebuke, the complete series on the fish is more discreet.
For contrast, but yes actually hear it in photoshop to open and it is clearly against productive, playing with layers of 10 photos why not, out of 620 pictures, I forget (even in batch
)
For deformations as explained above, the newlyweds were warm, if I use a fish it is precisely to get this coverage and this deformation. Use a fish and then recover not working directly in the wide angle
July 1st, 2008 at 4:16
What's with all these colors?
It's Christmas on the site?!
July 1st, 2008 at 3:04
I play around with the site
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:10
Hello!
I find it very nice that you answers to everyone.
So here is another question: Have you used artificiele light on this series, or you worked with only the light was there?
Thank you!
July 2nd, 2008 at 24:09
We would not have hoped for more as wedding photos. Benjamin has exceeded our expectations. It is now the official photographer of the family
Dati: Thanks for the counseling!
July 3rd, 2008 at 12:42
Oooops I just note that the answer to my question already been written on your "post".
Thank you so
July 5th, 2008 at 24:17
Thank you for posting the full story is always interesting to see the "available" full
July 6th, 2008 at 2:26
Still a good job Ben, the expressions, the compositions (even in a story you managed to get the idea!) And management of the exhibition, really superb, you continue to be one of the photographers who amazes me every new series ...
Very good luck to you.
Roman
July 13th, 2008 at 4:50
Congratulations again for the photos,
I just saw the full set of 600 pictures last night
Very goooodd work. I bow
July 22nd, 2008 at 11:37
I find your photos nickels I like them really well.
But on some (My personal opinion and nothing else), I would not open as much, but at the same time, I do not have a quarter of your talent.
Voili voilou and good luck to the newlyweds.
July 22nd, 2008 at 11:48
You do not use too much flash, do you have a specific reason? Certainly, the natural light
July 23rd, 2008 at 1:45
When the light is good do nothing more.
However, it seems to me that the latter are much flash, as Ben was in manual mode.
By the way Ben, always satisfied with your distributor?
July 24th, 2008 at 10:17
Antoine Magnier: Yep, it gives a good idea of all!
ksh: thank you!
Dati:
Manu: Yep but as you say it is biased so a history of taste! For the flash in the words Gam when the light is good must not touch anything!
For the latest images (around the 23 hours I was actually in flash)
Gam: Yep it's great! but I forgot it at this report ...
June 17th, 2010 at 24:08
Hello Benjamin,
As I count investire in optical fixed, I'm also looking for equipment to facilitate the chagement lens. For that I would be curious if you are using your belt always objective door, and if necessary, if you put in with the objectives or without plugs / caps.
Regards,
Stéphane
June 17th, 2010 at 12:13
Yes I use it very often, the goals I am not super careful, so sometimes yes sometimes no
June 17th, 2010 at 2:36
Thank you for the answer.
May 22nd, 2011 at 8:48
"Level Material: D3, 16mm 2.8 (the new guy), the 12/24 on 17/55 2.8, 50 1.4 and 85 1.4"
How do you use the 12/24 and 17/55 D3 2.8 on a box? The D3 is a full frame though, does not it.
Thank you for the clarification.
