Marriage Fatima Gabriel

June 22nd, 2008

Fatima and Gabriel contacted me on the advice of Dati (faithful reader of the blog according to him :) ) To cover their wedding this Saturday, June 21, 08.

It has been a first time to determine everyone's expectations, an important step to the proper "feel" the people and their expectations: No kitsch, no selective desaturation (they're not alone I find it atrocious, some the color image and the other in black and white), photos full of life with a story approach maintaining aesthetic quality.

I always have a hard time with the wedding photos some photographers with images much typed with married head in a wooden frame inside the frame color and the rest in black and white, the couple extended in the grass with the bouquet in color and the rest b / w, shots that crush any flash, the white Cramer made the crappy, the sepia yellow piss ect ...

So I arrived Saturday morning at 8 hours in the morning hairdresser / makeup to achieve a full report of the day, I do not consider the coverage of a marriage otherwise, it tells a story here, the long time spent with bride and groom can "feel" the atmosphere to restore it faithfully we witness moments that we are trying to capture as accurately.

Equipment level I left the big camera bag (with the mac CompuTrekker in) that on my last wedding I was more embarrassed than anything else. I opted for my trusty slingshot which allows me quick access to equipment. In order to distribute the load better and increase the ability and practicality of all I bought the belt from Lowepro.

Level I totally abandoned clothing pants suit and molières well polished, I opted for the big fat pants pockets (very useful for losing objots caps and other small "stuff") and good shoes light and comfortable hiking.

If we're going to spend 16 hours a shooter all be dressed accordingly. The other advantage is that people do not take you for a guest and you can charge you more easily.

Well to be honest it was more like a paragraph on a mission but it has the merit of making people laugh (which is good for portraits and helps break the ice)

Hardware: the D3, the 16mm 2.8 (the new guy) on the 12/24 17/55 2.8, 50 1.4 and 85 1.4, a note that I could do the story with a single battery. The 17/55 I served for three images, 12/24 for group portraits, I may be too used the fish (of course I asked for permission to married before, everybody n ' not want to have good pictures though distorted) the fault has my excitement for the new toy. The 50 and 85 accounted for 80% of my images.

I took my flash that I used until 10:40 p.m., the D3 can really work in difficult conditions.

For memory cards I took a risk, I left with two cards of 4 gigas in the box (the D3 is used to insert two cards simultaneously) which allows me a maximum of 620 pictures in total. Finally the decision has paid off, I spent my day cream has to go is essential.

I imported the 620 images to remove only 15 (plus duplicates foirées as images, screen D3 allows a real skimming). As usual I worked in RAW, no cropping, I added a little contrast in Capture One and exported to JPEG.

I hear a lot of photographers who spend hours behind the screen, for this report I would have had 60 minutes to my settings and my machine has 30 minutes to export images in JPEG format. The white balance is very faithful to the D3's I hardly fit. Some pictures deserve some corrections but it will be done on request of the couple.

An example of before and after (so just a little more contrast)

I chose to share with you 135 images, it's too much, but it is representative of this report by 16 hours. Share 10 good pictures of a wedding is quite easy in my opinion, in the long term it is always possible to leave some good images. Here I wanted to emphasize the narrative aspect and constant work.

  1. Laurent Garnier Says:

    great story! and good report!

the fisheye photos are wonderful, I love it! (I also regularly abused), the portraits are always so full of life! vraimant a very beautiful story, a continuation of what you usually do!

    continuing it's great! : Eek:

  2. Dnicolas.FR Says:

Very nice series. It is not unpleasant to look at your pictures and I like the way story.

As for the coup against me you really perverted. I am eyeing more to a 85mm 1.4 and forcing a D3.

  3. David Says:

Yeah I like it, life colors, I find that your frames are treated compared to the last round (you were probably more room to move which is normal).

A nice story about a day, much more interesting to show more of the classics.

It is an exercise that I know very tiring to have already done two weddings and I must admit it's hard to stay focused at the end of the day, you're very well worry out bravo.

  4. benoitmuguet Says:

    yes
excellent work, really a reporter's eye! you've dropped the fish lol I love that the output of this kind of church where tt is the focal sense to me ... be careful not to abuse it, but I understand you lol
    Congratulations!

  5. 50mm Says:

As always with you, full of natural images and happiness. The portraits are beautifully lit.
What strikes me most and I like the highest point, the atmosphere is 'good boy' and relaxed predominates.
Still a great job, far from the usual cliches of marriage.

  6. pifgadget Says:

It is true that when I see your wedding photos and those made by the "pros" to marriage of my friends ... it makes one wonder though.
Maybe it's because you are new to you and you still have this cool, but I think mostly it's a state of mind.
Otherwise I see you are a man of taste the same since we sweat (laFraise ...) : Mrgreen:

  7. Coniglio Says:

Rambo Is in the place, but Goku is never far from the party (eating?) KITCH : Mrgreen:: Grin:: Razz:

    I say "Aaaaaah!"
Less convinced by the performance of the club, even if you leave out are great, here we find the emotion and the method Ben.
The horizontal reading of your vision lends itself very well to the side "I tell a story." 135 pictures in the end without fatigue because it is varied.
You spend the fisheye at 50mm, the 50mm fisheye by two U-turns and detours through your 85mm, stroke of the viewing angles are varied and have different dynamics.

On the technical side. It lightfull (co'd'hab) is full of emotions (the bride and groom will be happy), it's clean without being stored (135 images? I will say much less). Mission accomplished for our commando Bengohan

ps: nice house with white walls! Is lucky! Me and the last (first : Oops: ) Had walls covered with curtains worthy of combi ski 30 years.

  8. Fred Says:

    Hi,

Excellent work! :) Good results ... natural and expressive.

    Hats off :)

    A +

    Fred

  9. Klesk Says:

Once again fine Boulo. I still love him very much the pure color (you are using a particular curve or it is the normal rendering of D3?), And light. However there is just something for once hurts me : D . On some portrait (superb incidentally), I put a bit of a correction because it really is not flattering when you dive a lot. This is not to smooth the skin as the magazines, but only to transfer the few imperfections : D

  10. niktard Says:

yeeeep! really top this story and this blog after all, not found best online photo! a continuous LKV make me dream! : Mrgreen:

  11. Dati Says:

I confirm I am Nondidjuuu faithful reader! : Wink:

And I confirm also the clothes ... my little brothers whispered to me when we were still in the town, "he kidding your friend dressed as Rambo there!" : Mrgreen:
At the same time I better understood what you had said you go to bed on the floor when I see the picture under the "trampoline" with the children.

In any case it was said, 135 photographs we see not pass. Is not very good goal for me either ... : Smile:

But anyway great job once again and Fatima is pleased. But hey, that you should probably already be aware : Wink:

  12. Dati Says:

By the way, I see you've been in Yulbiz the next day after all.
Pretty vintage photographs of the Atomium : Wink:

I did not know going in the end.

In short, sorry to pollute the discussion with pictures which I hope will be another post.

    Good work

  13. benjamin ziegler Says:

    Superb series!
especially in the car's original ;)
But a little too much Fisheye for my taste.

A QTVR when a small caught in the crowd?

  14. Sophie Says:

Or less the same viewpoint as that of Coniglio.
Less absorbed by your series on the nightclub in the church, I found your most "paw" on these beautiful wedding photos.

Light, framing, seized the moment ... you have done more than just hard work.
    Some wedding photographers should build.

As for the choice of the fisheye, I regret into a single image: that of the bride under his helmet in the salon, if I find it perfect for the occasion.
My 15mm came, JEVAIS look for this week.

Congratulations Ben and thank you to you (and married) to share with us these photos.

As for the belt Lowepro, I eyed it for my slingshot beginning to weigh heavy and not always practical to run his bag to retrieve something. But I was hesitant to do with that fighter at the waist ... lol
May be a future purchase ...

Was daring combat clothing to cover a wedding but ultimately good choice of work, as more convenient and comfortable to move.

  15. Benjamin | Photobie Says:

Laurent Garnier: Hi Lawrence, thank you!

    Dnicolas.FR: Should wait for the D700 :)

David: Yep, the benefit is actually a marriage that you can move you to get your image, you can go to the people without screaming!

benoitmuguet: thank you Benoit finally on the overall work I do not really abused the Fish :) and then I fall too much in the next big nose, small eyes.

50mm: I tried to make the most of this day :)

pifgadget: To have met a few pros, it's much more a state of mind that fatigue in my opinion, I have seen pictures of pro and I saw absolutely superb stuff is crap. For the strawberry I remain a fan of their T'shirt ;)

Coniglio: For the evening, I am happy with my pictures, but I'm also well aware of the conditions ;) For the passage of focal lengths during the marriage, it is quite complicated to manage, spend 50 to 16 to return to the 85 is easy for the cocktail during the ceremony is much more tense! a second case as a small D700 would be welcome :)

    Fred: Thank you : Smile:

Klesk: No curves in the D3, I work in RAW ;) For corrections to be selective on request (and personally I can not find this to be necessary ;) )

    niktard: msieur Thank you!

Dati: Yep! It was nice to meet you :) For the photo under the trampoline I almost eat my case, be underneath with kids jumping on top of you and misjudge the attention of the surface it might hurt! Fati looked very happy!

I passed a Yulbiz but for 15 minutes, I was too flat for marriage! The two photos of the Atomium in the corridor are a little easier ;)

Benjamin Ziegler: I just pushed the fish in this selection, the total is less than this ;)

Sophie: Thank you Sophie! have fun with your 15 ;) The top belt is ca and distributes the weight well, a good investment for me! For clothes is a real plus, it makes people laugh, ca engages the discussion (like the bowl of noodles) and ca can roll over without worry (a t-shirt is not a bad alternative idea for the evening)

  16. Dnicolas.FR Says:

    For the D700 I am skeptical because it's just a D3 without grip. So D3X: p: p

  17. Sophie Says:

    Yulbiz?
These are the pictures you see on your homepage?
    They are superb.
You're going to spend an item?

Well, going for a ride on my blog from time to time to see the latest photo series and give me your opinion.

  18. Bafo Says:

At the risk of offending the "purists", I just say that it is good to see people happy and friendly .. Yeah what, this superb documentary almost makes me want to get to know these people .. and I think this is one of the objectives to be achieved by a good photographer (of course the atmosphere is festive, but sometimes we are quite surprised some choices ..) Finally, no worries here, the atmosphere is great made and the memory is magnified by the cool pictures! Congratulations to you and bcp married happiness to have been right to trust you ;-)

  19. pixel Says:

    Impressive ;)

  20. Bertrand Says:

Totally agree with those who recognize you in this exercise rather than a nightclub.

I put myself in the place of marriage. P ... they should be happy to have such beautiful memories.

And say ... fortunately you do not have to sign a document image rights as the Marathon Fnac because you could've put a printer in your shorts for Lara Croft : Lol:

  21. phazer Says:

What can I say except that the photos are sublime. Too bad I do not intend to get married because otherwise I would have thought of you for the pictures. I will come to regret not want to get married. ;-)

  22. MickymX Says:

Wow all this already how to read ...
So as Coniglio, the series POPVERT ... left me a little about my hunger. This is not your taff I like best. I'm not saying if you did not do anything that would be just fine ...
When I see this series, I thought, "HAaaaaaaa someone who has the same vision of a wedding story than mine" .. I never covered or done anything like that but I've already thought of seeing another do. And there it is far from 10,000 (in your series) poses where we see the family over. It takes but it's not just that. There are married but they will see all their lives (married to: p), they want to remember people who were there moments. In short I am a fan, your light management is to go (grrr this interior all white Hummer), expressions, templates, the bride smiling. Nickel (slightly abused the fish for my taste but it was now or never ^ ^)
I remain a fan of your taff.

  23. Dati Says:

Picture a little easier but it's certainly always throws avecun wide angle in this type of staircase : Wink:

If not too delighted to have met you : Smile:

  24. Mike Says:

just as already reported by some.
No I was not too fan of the series that I found last borrowed (taken into the hands of the new toy .??).
But the approach and found the image quality that I like.
    Bravo! A beautiful story.

  25. delphine Says:

I thought the last series and this super too!
Beautiful story, people are beautiful, happy everything right!
Humm ... these cakes, yum yum, a real Suplice for Exhile my way!

  26. G Says:

    Series is very clean.
As usual, "very BROLET" we'll say.

Although I must admit that I do not agree specifically to your description here, especially on the part of the work of "mass" because I think it's fairly limited.

I left that dream about owning a case such as the D3 and a premium lens that to have fun with it at any time of day and night.

In short, still very nice here.
A older, they should be crossed at times,
we are both from Brussels - although I admit I was a tiny bit dropped side events in Brussels this year because I am very often in England -

s'capte it one of these four, facebook, flickr, ... We'll see.
    A plush

    Ez,
    G

  27. Davidon Says:

    Hi Benjamin,

a nice series full of life ... it's good to see pictures if "dynamic" :) . The bride and groom had to be happy ...
I hang at least some fish curiously, but at least it has the merit of being diverse :)

    @ +

    D1

  28. Marescaux David Says:

I think this is the first time that I post on your site, yet it's been almost two years I have your work .. And yes, it was still the old design that I liked also :)

It's funny, I bought 2 weeks ago the D3 also my first marriage (that of a friend) this Saturday, I was able to test this sleek and my optical (fairly close to yours)

Draws you something great! Technically very well!
I really like the way you work, simple and effective. Little post prod - a lot of spontaneity.
Clear that there are key "BROLET" :)

    I was wondering something ....
BUT HOW DO YOU TAKE OUT THE OPTICAL TTE ON YOUR BELT? In the photo above you have taken still not all optical so??

    Continues, you really rips!

    David

  29. Jo Says:

    Very nice series

I always wonder, or you go out of your colors
As I understand your pictures the technical side, DOF white balance etc. ..
    But the colors?

Take back you curves colors in photoshop?

    Very nice rendering
    Jo.

  30. Skal Says:

Sublime series again! What art and what mastery of light, it is a feast for the eyes.

If I hear around me someone who intends to marry photographer I know what the counselor!

This is a great gift for the bride and groom, the series comes out beautifully from the ordinary wedding albums that can sometimes see who are often stereotyped, with pictures and "poses questions too." You really have nothing to envy to what a lot of pros in the stories of weddings, but often too difficult topic marked ...

Here one feels a natural, it seems to be at this wedding, the pictures are taken at the right moments, the frames allow dreamers and the light sparkles in the eyes.

Personally I think the fisheye was used wisely, with talent, especially for pictures of trampoline and those of groups: well done! As for the 50mm and 85mm, you have become in the course of your series and your progress a master "black belt" to the absolute minimum, Nikon should pay you royalties : Wink:

You have always really great ideas, and so talented! And especially the kindness to share your way of working and your tips and tricks (cf. belt, pants pocket, the monopod in the series on the way for Belgium) not to mention the tutorials.

    Allow me a few questions:

    - For color do you add (or remove) the saturation in Capture One?
    - You add contrast in Capture One: anything else?? (Eg sharpness)

Thank you in advance and congratulations!
PS: I was a bit long but difficult to get shorter as I'm a fan of your art.

  31. Neele Says:

    Great job.

I'm not hot on the fish.

I wonder if using a 14mm would not have been happier.

D3 this beautiful animal, I tested a Leica M8 with Noctilux which opened in f1, an interesting experience but I think I'll still to the D3.

  32. Fred Says:

It is true that there bcp fish ... but otherwise, apart from that and work belies offered by D3 and its driver, I will take my ticket well as a photographer for wedding in a few years ... like this one between Lenny Madonna ... and if the feeling is good, you will be a busy weekend ... more :-D

  33. Benjamin | Photobie Says:

Dnicolas.FR: is the case I expected, being impatient nature I fell for the D3 :)

Sophie: Yulbiz basically a web2.0 conference that featured new products and allowed bloggers to meet, this was a the Atomium in Brussels, so not standard on the subject because I just did two pictures a show of hands with the fish, nothing very thoughtful as shooting :)

    A first image

    http://www.photob.be/HFR/2008/atoblueweb.jpg

    A second image

    http://www.photob.be/HFR/2008/atoredweb.jpg

Bafo: Thank Bafo, the important thing is also the satisfaction of married (apart from that of the photographer) and in this case the first mail of Fatima was very positive ;)

    pixel: Thank you!

Bertrand: Made chi ... Fnac for the marathon, I also wanted to participate : (

    phazer: ;)

MickymX: Already all this about how to comment ;) , I reassure you, having talked to several people who have or who will marry you is not bad to share this approach ;)

    Dati: But clearly! the fun!

    Mike: thank you!

delphine: I like the photos of details, it allows a little air out a series for the album and it can be used to place background images :)

G: Thanks! Yep when you want!

    Davidon: Thank you!

David Marescaux: So happy with the D3 :) ! for our friends the optical I used mostly 50 and 85 and the fish, the rest in the bag :)

Jo: The colors depending on the light and the construction of the image, if I have a light background or a dark background for example. For this series I just added a little contrast in my images in Capture One, take each image in photoshop is not feasible (620 photos, 2 minutes per image, you see the trick ;) )

Skal: Thank you, I tend to be very critical of my work, I know what I want and I'm still far, the technical side is now I must continue in creative relationship to advance :)

    To answer your questions:

    - I I add contrast and saturation decreases slightly (increase the contrast increases sat)
    - The clarity I do not in Capture One must sharpeniser depending on the purpose of the image, I export my images with C1 with the default settings, then I resize with IrfanView before putting on the web

    ps: with pleasure!

Neele: It was my view a matter of taste :) some like, others not :) 14, seems to me also very interesting!

    Fred: ;)

  34. Gabriel Says:

Your story is really more than excellent! You do a lot better than many professional photographers. It's really a great job. Bravo!

  35. Chris Says:

    : Mrgreen:

    Very nice story indeed!
mastery and beautiful color! : Cool:

I just find that there are "many portraits" and ultimately too little story really, but very good!

I expected just "to better" know a little bit your pictures!
    It's already great! : Wink:

  36. olivier Says:

    Hi Benjamin,
I see that everything has been said ... I would add just so bravo! the bride and groom are really happy with their photos! ;)
    @ Soon

  37. XLR8 Says:

nice set, but I have trouble with the fish eye is very suitable in my opinion this type of reporting, you have taken risks, it is laudable, but too large deformations break some consistency reportage.
with DxO or other, you should correct, it goes best I think ...

  38. XLR8 Says:

for contrast, lab mode or with a curves adjustment layer in luminosity mode, you do not touch the saturation!

  39. XLR8 Says:

That said it is beyond the kitsch wedding pictures you see in the shops of photographers for sure!
we feel the modern photographer with fresh ideas!
corrects these distortions and frankly it will be spot on!

  40. Benjamin | Photobie Says:

    Gabriel: thank you!

Chris: The selection actually understand a lot of portraits, but somehow it just for the purpose of wedding pictures :)

    olivier: thank you :)

XLR8: I take the fish, the selection by lot resume, the full set of the fish is more discreet.

For contrast but yes actually hear in open photoshop and it is clearly against productive play with layers of 10 photos why not, out of 620 images, I forget (even in batch ;) )

For deformations as explained above, the couple were warm, if I use a fish is just to get this coverage and this deformation. Use a fish and then recover as much work directly at wide angle ;)

  41. Dati Says:

    What all these colors?

It's Christmas on the site?! : Smile:

  42. Benjamin | Photobie Says:

I play around with the site : Grin:

  43. bernalrevert Says:

    Hello!

I find you very nice replies to everyone.

So here is another question: do you use artificial light on this series, or you worked only with the light that there was?

    Thank you!

  44. The married Says:

We would not have hoped for better as wedding photos. Benjamin has exceeded our expectations. It is now the official photographer of the family :)

    Dati: Thanks for having recommended!

  45. bernalrevert Says:

Oooops I just note that the answer to my question already been written on your "post".

    Thank you so :)

  46. Antoine Magnier Says:

Thank you for having posted the full story is always interesting to see the "available" full : Mrgreen:

  47. ksh Says:

Still a good job Ben, the expressions, the compositions (even in a story you did get the idea!) And the management of the exhibition, really beautiful, you continue to be one of the photographers that surprises me every new series ...

    Very good luck to you.

    Roman

  48. Dati Says:

    Congratulations again for the photos,
I just saw the full set of 600 photos last night : Smile:

Very goooodd work. I bow : Wink:

  49. Manu Says:

I find your photos nickels I like them really well.

But on some (my personal opinion and nothing else), I would not open as much, but at the same time, I have not a quarter of your talent.

That voilou and good luck to the newlyweds.

  50. Manu Says:

You do not use too much flash, do you have a specific reason? Certainly, the natural light :?:

  51. Gam Says:

When the light is good, do nothing more.

However, it seems to me that the last are the flash, as Ben was in manual mode.

By the way Ben, always satisfied with your distributor?

  52. Benjamin | Photobie Says:

Antoine Magnier: Yep, this gives a good idea of all!

    ksh: thank you!

    Dati: :)

Manu: Yep, but as you say is biased, therefore a matter of taste! For the flash in the words Gam when the light is good must not touch anything!
For the latest images (around 23 hours I was actually in the flash)

Gam: Yep it's great! but I forgot it in this report ...

  53. Stéphane Says:

    Hi Benjamin,

As I look investire in optical fixed, I'm also looking for equipment to facilitate the drying of goal. For this I would be curious if you are using your belt is always objective, and if necessary, if you put the goals in with or without caps / caps.

    Regards,

    Stéphane

  54. Ben | Photobie Says:

Yes I use it very often, for the purposes I am not super careful, so sometimes yes sometimes no :)

  55. Stéphane Says:

    Thank you for the answer.

  56. Mathias Says:

    "Level material: the D3, the 16mm 2.8 (the new guy), the 12/24 on 17/55 2.8, 50 1.4 and 85 1.4"

How do you use the 12/24 and 17/55 2.8 on a box D3? The D3 is indeed a full frame, is not it.

    Thank you for the clarification.
