This Saturday, May 17 gay pride took place in Brussels, a good event to see what gives the D3 position reporting.

I took the D3, a SB800 flash, the Tokina (DX) 12/24, 50 1.4, 85 1.4 and 80/200 2.8 in bag Slingshot 200. (To be honest the 80/200 returns but takes a little force anyway)

Fashion infomercial "the slinghsot is really not bad, he can go out and store their equipment without removing the bag, we simply slide back the front of the body"

I had a meeting with Thomas (who should also post a series on his site ) has several outputs pictures is always nice to ca enables chatting in the subway and motivate each other ancillary or annoy his friend with a D3 recently acquired.

Diffuse light was great (big post-storm clouds) great for portraits, more binding for pictures with wide angle (cramés skies, topics such as) speaking of the wide-angle 12/24 home Tokina "up" on the D3 has provided you do not go below 20 mm (unless you like good heavy vignetting way peephole).

D3 with the 50mm take into its own as a focal story (grin of argenteux), neither too long nor too short, so I used the 50mm for about 70% of my images for the remaining 30% I would say 20 % of 85 mm, 7% 12/24 and 3% of 80/200.

I had brought the 80/200 be thinking too short and finally I did almost never used, I'm really more fun to go to the contact 50, 80/200 is bulky, the subject is photographed intimidated (obviously a big zoom is pro ca / press should therefore not messing too much for the photo).

I expected the flash to fill-in work and avoid cramés skies but when the sky is white at the base was beautiful "overpowerer" sky light with the flash you end up with gray skies instead of a white sky ... the flash is gone to join the 80/200 warm in the slingshot.

When you work for the first time with a new case you lose a lot of automation, I know the D200 or are the buttons, so I can example to change or modify the iso instead of a collimator without looking my case, with the D3 I must relearn these automatisms which prevents the instinctive side and made me miss out on some pictures.

Collimators on the D3 is reminiscent ca has the eyes of flies and you wonder Why this is, all focused collimators 51 year viewfinder center ... super convenient (I'm told in the atrium that will be corrected for the D3x the fault of the remains of the APSC) direction the user manual that I will bring myself to read to see if we can limit the number.

Metering, I work all the time spot, which is based on the selected focus ... (The 51 in the center of the viewfinder ...) so I first worked with compensation matrix expo (with control on the histogram). The results are very satisfactory, the matrix is really effective for what little we know what to aim for, people on a white sky always gonna give faces and a former under overexposed sky. We must therefore constantly working his background to give light on it.

The AF of the D3 is better than the D200 lenses are faster to their development which is pretty comfortable, the AFC is bluffing efficiency even though I prefer the AFS for this type of reporting.

I shot in RAW, imported images in Capture One, added contrast and reduced saturation, some images in my opinion should have a little work with photoshop but I'm lazy ...

I end this little report with "the" question, could I achieve the same images with the D200? Yes for sure, certainly with less viewing comfort, less "shaped" and reduces blur background. The "real" test in D3 will light conditions much more difficult!

    Thomas not in the series!
    I am disappointed :)
No seriously the colors are fantastic, the poses are great (ask you to people or something special is what it is spontaneous?), And the composition is beautiful (see the one with the two buses).
In the processing still on C1? Are you going through a export settings or have you treated by a photo EVERY one?
    So many unanswered questions ...

  2. ksh Says:

Ok I just read the article drops the question of C1, the question of D200, yes you could have done as well see better knowing that you knew the D200 and D3 the least, but hats off ...

  3. David Says:

Very nice bokeh, very nice pictures for a first release, the shows are tip-top, nothing to say except congratulations.

  4. delphine Says:

    Great series!!
Beautiful colors, beautiful compositions, all beautiful! Indeed we see not too too too much quality difference with your previous series (which were fanstastiques), or maybe I look bad.

What I'm most jealous in history is not the D3 (though) is that you are a friend to accompany you / chat / share and motivate you (and taunt)! Ca, it has no price; =)

When the Slingshot, it is attractive ... I am determined to take a Crumpler instead ... but the girls in France asks me all the time if it's a baby bag or a freezer bag! Not the desired effect ...
Arrg, I should have taken the Slingshot!

  5. rqko Says:

    Nice as all this review.
For the slingshot, it's not bad but beware I find a bit fragile closures mine just dropped. But it's still a nice bag story.

    Super your blog ;)

  6. 50mm Says:

What strikes me first is the quality and sharpness of images. Indeed, on the net, you can not see a big difference with the D200. However, I'm curious to see these images at full size.
A very nice colorful story that you have done.
Compliance. 'm Going to see the photos of Tom. : Mrgreen:

  7. azoe Says:

It is true that the 50mm FF is a very good focal, since I was on the 5d I unscrewed the evil.
    Beautiful pictures, thank you.

    John.

  8. Wildebeest Says:

For your problem of collimator, you can spend 11-point numbers in the menu a8 : Wink:

  9. Mdkart Says:

The record is still different from the D200 I think. Won the diaphragm is visible in photographs taken at medium range.
Otherwise framing, moments captured, all this is that good!

  10. Mdkart Says:

Oh also, I forgot to ask you, the 80-200, what he gives on the D3? It returns the thumbnail as I've seen with the 70-200?

  11. Thomas Blariau | Photographer | Brussels Says:

[...] Ben and I, we went to the Gay Pride in Brussels. He can finally test its new [...]

  12. tom Says:

    Yop!

Photos of course very interesting and minutes of your new toy in line with what I thought.

This lack of collimators on the corners is enough ** ch and then you go from left to right, there is the click : Twisted:

Anyway, this is the only criticism I could make that case (Ha, yes! Its price! : Grin: )

Glad you busy in the subway! : Razz:

    : Grin:

    Tom

  13. Bertrand Says:

I saw Ben's brighter. Ok, the weather was not super good shape but it seems to me anyway and contrasting darker than usual. The question is: the price / result justifies Does the passage of D200 and D3? Because the difference in euros is huge. But I'm sure you'll show us the thing in the coming months! Otherwise, I love this series! Bravo!

  14. Shooter Says:

    Hello Ben,

Very interesting your grip, this is 6 months that I have the D3 for reporting pros, a large good quality!

When I see the quality of your pictures, it is high time that you began to think to live your passion ...

  15. Olivier (OliGenix) Says:

    Hi Ben,

Excellent story (like Thomas there ...). There preque style "Ben" that installs when you see your two sets : Wink:

Difficult to judge the contribution of D3 on this series, except as blurs seem still more progressive!

    Good luck ...

  16. cyril Says:

    Hello,

Bravo for this series and the new case, in fact, this is the "must of the time," I have myself a D300 and I am thrilled!

You allude to the collimators and spot metering, I think the D3 act identically to the D300, you can choose, 9, 11, 21, 51 + 51 collimators and collimators with 3D tracking to lock the subject without let go, putting good on FA "C" and not "S" = AF-C

Question! Why you used "as you mention above," the spot metering almost all the time? center-weighted metering does not suit you?
Very interested in your answer, because I also juggles between the matrix which gives innatendus sometimes result in exposure, and the weighted Spot .... rarely (but may ^ be given your answer I would change ... why not! ;-) ).

Thank you in all this for your site, and especially for your heading "technical" and I learned a lot ...

  17. Istratov Alexander Says:

Benjamin nice series, one would almost think it was fine ...

You would not have taken a picture in this pretty truck advertising it by chance? I made this photo but could not be there to capture ...

  18. Jeje the Road Says:

    Hello,
Another beautiful and LONG series, you feel that you wanted to test the beast and make up pictures in different styles : Wink:

Otherwise, I think it is less bright because Ben has worked in dot matrix instead of being in the spotlight as usual '
And for style Ben & Tom : Lol: I would say the style C1 offers this feature made it so, I use the same dématriceur and rendering my photos is pretty much the same (but my photos are not as good ...).

  19. MickymX Says:

    http://www.photob.be/series/pride/CustomName042.jpg <- Yum and
    http://www.photob.be/series/pride/CustomName093.jpg re yum.
There are others of course ...
But it is the device that does everything ;)

  20. ksh Says:

    Fantastic!

  21. Twan Says:

Eh eh I also went to the big sensor and ditto I rediscovered the joys of 50mm : Mrgreen:

  22. Karb Says:

Hi Ben .. for a first with the beast in you're out very well .. congratulations be a little bb compared to your previous series, (nothing in the purely artistic components choice of angles and pictures ..) and I'm not sure it comes to shooting elsewhere (although the gray sky was not the ideal ..), but rather the treatment that I find sometimes a little rough in contrast he lacks a bit this peps and that freshness that characterizes you ..

  23. Benjamin | photob Says:

ksh: Not Thomas :) , Poses for I go to the contact but I ask nothing of particular :)

    David: Thank you!

delphine: I personally see the difference in the sharpness, blur and modeling, but it is mostly present on the full size, for the crumpler is not a bad thing that happens to a freezer bag (less flight potential)

    rqko: thank you!

    50mm: thanks :)

azoe: yep the 50 really my preference

    Wildebeest: Thank you, hop changed!

Mdkart: thanks! Difficult to answer if you ca vignettte for the time I noticed anything

    Tom: Sure ;)

Bertrand: Less bright but more mixed, this may arise from my new screen and especially since I worked a lot in matrix for the difference I am already expressed in the above post, but if we take this logic the D40 will do just as well as the D200 for this type of reporting :)

Shooter: Yeah clearly, for the pro side, I think

Olivier: The blur are more "creamy"

cyril: All did, I just set it to limit the number of collimators, to the extent I usually spot a measure on the cheek with a correction of +0.7, the weighted I do not like because often the background is lighter or darker and far beyond the face on the bottom :)

Alexander: No I have not, but Tom sent you the file

Jeje: I might be of a more selective :) For Capture One style is made to restore the skin tones right : Smile:

MickymX: Just did, the case has done everything! : Eek:

    Twan: I discover I ... : Grin:

  24. cyril Says:

    @ Benjamin,

Thank you very much for your answer, ok I understand better for the "spot" with 0.7 saw ;-)

Last question (for your answer and I think for portraits) and the rest, crowd, group, always "spot"? or the matrix?

Thank you again for your great work .....

    A +

    Cyril

  25. alain Says:

beautiful this test session, even if the result does not seem fundamentally different from your work at D200: we feel that the mastery of the technique to the shot and treatment, and especially excellent goals are very good results

as you say yourself the real test of this kind of case is when the D200 is worth, ie especially when you board the ISO

it says your pictures are always at 85mm as grasping, personal is what has most caught my attention, even if the 50 are also very successful
I'll have to compare the evolution of the PDC with your transition to FF, for now it does not jump to my eyes (it's always good what)

Finally, for sensors not eccentric, you're not the only one to complain, it's canon in the same boat, it is for that reason alone I am not moved to 5D on ASP-C sensors cover approximately 57% of the width and FF (5D, the 1Ds), that is 42%! great for making compounds to third parties! and yet, externals are often not crossed (it changed from 1D3)!

I hope they eventually get along is one of the reviews I've seen over the web :/ and one of the nicest benefits of small sensors ...

right now you have to shoot the beast within its limits, we expect to see : D

  26. Sophie Says:

    Very good series.
D3 or D200, you manage, whatever.
The slingshot, I have for some time now and I can say it is perfect target on his back, and when the need, hop, we slid on its belly. Very convenient for me.
Gay Pride, this Saturday will be for me. I hope to bring as beautiful as you. :)

  27. Benjamin | photob Says:

cyril: For groups of people I tend to work with Matrix correction expo but it depends a lot of the scene being photographed

alain: For me the most important are the objots, to choose between a D70 with a 50 1.4 and a D3 with a 18/55 base I would take the D70 for this type of reporting. Given the type of image that I think you realize you know very well what I mean :)
For the PDC I see quite well, because I know very well render the D200 and I can see the difference with the rendering of D3 (more modeling, richest shadows ect ...) the difference is obvious on the image in full def.

For collimators, given the type of format you produce I understand completely your choice :) , For high-sensitivity test, I had a vent cover which should operate well :)

I invite visitors to visit to see your pictures that I greatly appreciate http://alaindavreux.com/

Sophie: Thank you! Good luck for the photos!

  28. cyril Says:

    @ Benjamin,

Thank you very much for your answer, Ok for the matrix ;-) I do the same ....

  29. Bertrand Says:

Well, I had not noticed the self portrait on it: http://www.photob.be/series/pride/CustomName042.jpg hehehe : Grin:

  30. ksh Says:

All black class ... : Mrgreen:

  31. alain Says:

    thank you Benjamin ;)

indeed the choice of stones is paramount, the newcomers often have their eyes on the box and go 18-55 with a very dark ... it is often much more profitable to take a lame entry level, or opportunity, and to afford some nice goals ...

for PDC I would follow your testing as you, that you feel a real difference confirms my choice, I just hope that the successor to the 5D sensor will focus less : D

Now I wait for your tests high iso : D

  32. David Says:

    I totally agree with Ben,

I personally have a Nikon D50 for over two years with good goals as the 50mm f1.8, 24-70 f2.8 and a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 sigma

Well I would not trade it all for a Nikon D3 with 18-55 f3.5-5.6

The objectives are what is most important, it is better than 6million pixel pretty ugly pixels 12millions : Lol:

  33. phazer Says:

I just discovered your photos of Gay Pride, there's nothing to say they are top!
I was there too with my 400D + Sigma 10-20 (and also my Slingshot 200) and was quite happy with the result ... but in full view of yours and those of Thomas, I think I still have a lot work to do. : Cry:

  34. olivier Says:

    Hello,
Congratulations on this series, I find indeed that for a first grip the result is really good ... it is true that this type of test for the gay pride is a great event because it moves all the time ... :) Personally I have a D300 which gives me full satisfaction ... but I'm glad to see that the 50mm is still doing wonders! ;)
    Good luck

  35. Benjamin | photob Says:

Bertrand: yep I'll post the good crop, quite impressive in terms of definition :)

    Alain: It's coming ;)

David: it is exactly that, I started investing in my objots before moving to another case, the reverse does not make sense :)

phazer: this is the hardware that does everything : Lol:

    Olive: Thank you!

  36. Bertrand Says:

chick. curious to see this crop : Wink:

  37. David Says:

Ditto, I'm curious to see what happens in terms of definition with a box like this.

  38. Benjamin | photob Says:

    crop

  39. ksh Says:

Cow ... you can barely see the pixels!
    What resolution there?

  40. Benjamin | photob Says:

Ksh, it's just a zoom 100%, the D200 is just as good : Smile:

  41. Dati Says:

It kills this crop is almost a com 'to be alone in the image itself :-)

The Queen's Gallery in front of panos by the way ... ;-)

  42. MickymX Says:

    What crop : Mrgreen: !
Very good that : Shock: bedridden, the spectacles of Mr. : Cool:

  43. Bertrand Says:

I love it! The crop itself is a great photo! It looks like a fisheye ... and detail, the hand of the "flagship" in the bottom right. Bravo!

  44. Bertrand Says:

And associated with the left eye, it would make a composite of hell!

  45. alain Says:

fine example of what not to do with 12 million pixels, there's still a good margin ;)

  46. Benjamin | photob Says:

    Dati: Yep just : Grin:

    MickymX: Glasses own good

Bertrand: Yes, but I croppe, very, very rarely my images, I like to exploit my small pixels : Grin:

alain: although clearly in my view, the D200 does the same :)

  47. Nice Wedding Photographer Says:

    Superb!

Again I think very highly saturated colors. What post processing do you do?

    SLTS,

    Wedding Photographer Nice

  48. Benjamin | photob Says:

PMN: I work in Capture One, I add some contrast and saturation decreases I nothing more in fact, I forbid any crop to exploit all the available pixels. On the next series on the parade zinneke you an example of before and after in C1 (Capture One)

    http://www.photob.be/2008/06/02/zinneke-parade-2008/

  49. Chris Weiner Says:

I also went to recement D3. (Exit the E-1).
And the digital, it's really a dream machine, equally at home on the street than studio!

In any case, when one has a look like yours, it's worth it to fall out with his banker! ;-)

    Good luck!

    Chris

  50. Chris Weiner Says:

To close, I still prefer my M6 ... more difficult to use, but fun to shoot is different! : Smile:

  51. Thom @ s Says:

Hello Benjamin, I find your blog. Really extra. : Cool:

I just offered me a D90 and a Sigma 30mm. Gives you details on how you take your tophs helps me a lot ...

Could you tell me what the CO Update that you use to make this type of framing? The 50 or 85? (I think that the D3 is FF where I think to do the math on my APS-C : Wink: )

    http://www.photob.be/series/pride/CustomName094.jpg

Anyway thank you for these beautiful images ...

  52. Benjamin | photob Says:

Thomas: Most of the time be it 50mm on the D3 or D200 :) It is small, lightweight and does not really impresses topic :)

  53. Thom @ s Says:

With the D3, you must be pretty close. You do not strain too scared : Roll: ?

  54. Benjamin | photob Says:

Nobody forces you to get closer, personally I like being close enough to my subject matter and deformation ca going very well at a distance "normal"

  55. Olivier Says:

The deformation depends more on the focal length, an 35 (human vision) or 50 does not deform the faces, :) the latter is suitable for wearing as the 80, 100 and 150 ... except it is becoming far ;-)

  56. Thomas Says:

Hello Mr. Benjamin, have you already had occasion to test the new AF-S 50mm?
