Polarized sea and boat

October 22nd, 2007

boat
Since the resale of my Sigma 18/50 2.8 (sold with its polarizing filter) I no longer has a polarizing filter adapted to a wide angle lens, I finally decided to invest in a polarizing adapted to the large diameter of the Tokina ( 77 mm).

The price of a polarizing filter varies with the diameter of it, with a diameter of 50mm is around the price of 50 euros for the 77 mark depending on the "street prices" are recognized around the 120 - 180 euros, when one goes to a very polarizing for the angle must be taken into consideration that the thickness of the filter can create additional vignetting (a large aperture) to that of the objective it is necessary to move toward a model thinner and therefore more expensive ...

The advantages of polarizing filter:

  • It reduces glare from reflective surfaces (such as water, glass ..)
  • It condenses and saturates the blue sky
  • For the portrait he gives a "hotter" in the skin

On the advice of my camera dealer, I decided to invest in the Sigma EX Wide Multi Coated, critics are apparently quite good about it.

I took a boat trip organized this weekend for a corporate event, to make some pictures taking to derive maximum advantage of the polarization.

To take maximum advantage of the filter effect working with the sun behind. This allows to have a deep blue sky. The images displayed in Capture One that already appear very neutral contrast, I chose to voluntarily reduce the maximum saturation of images and only play with contrast and white balance to get this look dense and slightly saturated blue.

For example here is a picture with the spin-on filter thoroughly with a neutral saturation in Capture One and white balance achieved as a shooting, the next picture is the same image with a scale a little colder and saturation at least in Capture One.

Both results are interesting for me, but I was looking this side and slightly saturated blue.

If you want to take a look a RAW file in here has an available

saturation

low saturation

I like this series, but I'm not a fan of the treatment déssaturé: I like all the rawness of the photo of cargo in port ...

  2. MickymX Says:

    Ha ... I thought to when a new series : D
I like the treatment you bring to this series. We leave the flashy colors that can bring the polarizing (I speak especially green and yellow) with your slight desat. It gives a twist.
And see your RAW comforts me and saddens me: the output quality of digital cameras is not necessarily better than mine (actually I just bought a Sigma 18-50 8.2 EX DC MACRO for Canon and I keep no zoom, perverse, and say that my shots are not great dives) but in fact it is the treatment (and framing) that I do not necessarily mastery.
Otherwise: a little flare on 6662 of the pola? and last a bit light on my screen.

Hi hi, me too it was time that I was expecting a series, really nice treat. When will a new series of portraits, for I confess I am a big fan ...

AND although I also expect a long series! I missed almost ca!

I like it, well I like the desaturation. The composition also always well chosen, els pictures are beautiful.

Very nice set, once again. : Mrgreen:
The rendering of this new filter is very interesting but its price is high enough, is not it?
    Nice work!
    Strongly the next round.

    Hello,
cool me I like these a little different because of the price the polarity (and also ND : ( ) But I'll get to see my wide angle, the 70-200 and 300mm in 77mm it will be easier to return : D

florian: Thank you, AC is a matter of taste and preferences of each :)

MickymX: I was looking for something less flashy, it gives the polarity of the longing of saturation that I have a little curb, for the quality of the output of apn say that I think that that is the kind of image or a difference would be visible :) . Otherwise yes obviously a bit of flare but with such a sun and a very wide angle AC is somewhat inevitable, nothing dramatic

    Renaud: It's coming!

delphine: Thank you!, in the series I did a lot of portraits and images "with people in them" but for copyright reasons I do not put them online

Fred: The price of the filter 's really high if I was a bit more patient I would have probably ordered via the net, but I know it's the kind of accessory that is always necessary when one has not :)

Antoine Magnier ak Twan: The ND I spend some time, the polarity is my 85 1.4 and 80/200 2.8 that have the same diameter, the studio for the polarity may be interesting to heat and to reduce brightness!

    Hello Ben

Very nice series with your polarity. The Tokina seems very attractive.

However, after a look, I notice a very ugly artifacts in gradient is visible in your gallery and in the nave with Capture One that you provided.

By cons, out of curiosity, I tried the same trick as NX (which exasperates me too) with an additional desaturation in Photoshop, since NX is unable to go down very low.

And surprise, more smooth in transitions, less choppy.

Bouuuum Gam is the falling back on his chair ...

    Tell me what you think.

    A +

PS: It's hot to shoot digital Baryta NB, I just went around, the Gobi Desert.

Nice shots, I prefer this kind here in B & W high contrast to a previous series that I had criticized.
    @ +

    Enjoy
