Discovery of Lightroom and photos
July 8th, 2007
I use for almost eight months as Capture One software "derawitiser" my pictures, the software is extremely fast and intuitive and it allows me to make the necessary adjustments before publishing my pictures on my website or print.
Opt for RAW in my opinion is a huge time saver (not to mention the qualitative aspect), if a series of pictures shows something has to change (contrast, exposure, white balance) the change is applied to a single image and then be applied to the entire series.
Visualization in a contact sheet also allows fast and quick editing to remove the photos and assign priorities to work with images. Working in RAW also allows me 95% of cases do without photoshop which is a significant time savings.
Responsive to market products, I test various software frequently dedicated to this task. I installed Nikon Capture NX, which I believe delivers the meuillieure quality in terms of raw image, the method of work area (the U-points) is really impressive, flip side, the software is slow, extre slow for me totally against-productive.
I just followed the development of Lightroom published by Adobe, the beta versions suffered the same problem of slow and the software was far from matured.
It is now two weeks since I tested the latest version of Lightroom and I am amazed, Lightroom is really thought by and for photographers. The interface is customizable, ergonomic, and fluid management workflow (import to print via the Web) is truly complete. Lightroom has features expected for too long in one capture (recovery of light areas, fill light function, possibility of a "real" black and white mixing layer) short of happiness.
So I keep Capture One for images of "reporting" for its speed and simplicity and I focus more on Lightroom to work more "refined".
A trial version of Lightroom is available for download from the Adobe website.
Here are some pictures taken this weekend and developed in Lightroom.
The first two have performed this weekend at a small outlet with Thomas , for a more dramatic side of the flash was used to clarify the subject and darken the sky (hence the slightly unreal looking for in the image ), the wide angle is a 12 / 24 home Tokina.

The next three were made Sunday night with Lauren who had contacted me to make some images together (a series is in preparation) they were performed on the "alive" in a 50 1.4. I wanted the images very clear (but not burned) and mixed on the web compressed version here face lacks a bit of respect.

Hi Ben,
what do you think the software BibblePro?
Personal I use Linux because we did not have much choice in software, Dumoine for the moment;)
PS: very nice photos
Good luck!
July 8th, 2007 at 10:29
aperture you tried?
beautiful pictures anyway ...
July 8th, 2007 at 10:42
Good evening Pol,
I tested and I found quite a semblabe Capture One, Capture seems better thought and especially in my opinion reproduces skin tones more realistic.
The ingrégration of Noise Ninja in Bibble is very useful for cons, Volker had a fairly comprehensive testing for version 4 which said much good.

jluc,
I wanted, but he did not want my ibook G4
I'm running win for the desktop and MacOSX for the laptop, capture one runs well on osx, Aperture threw me for insufficient configuration
July 8th, 2007 at 10:58
The portraits are beautiful, the contrast enhances the look well. Beautiful pictures!
July 9th, 2007 at 9:41
Well, official supplier of pretty models
Joking aside, your feedback on Lightroom (we) am interested. I wait a bit to test it for now because I find Capture NX (but slower than the Photoshop Camera Raw).
So good luck on your next Lightroom and deeply set with Lauren
July 9th, 2007 at 10:23
Thank you for this return to Lightroom, I've never tested and the feedback I have received so far were not top.
I only use Camera Raw for Photoshop but I feel a bit limited and for my part in more than one out of two I use photoshop.
July 9th, 2007 at 11:08
Hi Diane,
In the version of Photoshop CS3, the version of Camera Raw has been updated, CR becomes a real tool usable with new features such as the possibility of the B / W Channel Mixer directly in CR, CR n ' is not a software dedicated to "derawitisage" it does not manage workflow, it does its job is to import a RAW in Photoshop
Now everything depends of course on the use of your RAW software
July 9th, 2007 at 11:41
ah but I only have photoshop CS so it must be said
July 9th, 2007 at 5:53
Hi all,
Personally, I use lightroom beta since its release (December?), it is really great this app (in fact improved CR c), so it's great for RAW, the switch photoshop lightroom is really handy too (physical corrections the image).
Library management is not bad, but against my sake, I have a library of 4000 pictures (3000 15mb of raw ...) and I have big problem to import new photos, it crashes after 5 imports ... say it's my PC and not lightroom which saturates, at least I hope ...
test it some time!

damn and I submit too fast! yet beautiful photos ben
need you to explain if you can take a portrait 50mm 1.4 in having just the tip of the nose net and the rest of the face already blur
too crazy this goal.
July 9th, 2007 at 7:21
Nix thank you for your comment
For now I have 200 pictures in the DB So for now was manageable by cons I'm going to invest in some ram
I reworked the pictures of Lauren, back on the various forums are all in the same direction; contrast too high, too light skin and dark hair too, I just rebalanced
July 9th, 2007 at 8:21
Hello,
First comment from me and the first opportunity to compliment you for your photos and articles. Tell your friend David (guitarist) I love your site, do not inform you much ...
Personally, I also use LR for a while. I currently 4300 images in my DB and this advance not bad at all. Okay, I admit, I am pleased with MBP
For the same DB, that Aperture is faster but it's true that the features of the library are less extensive in LR. This is especially smart collection that I miss. I fixed LR module for its development.
About the latter, I found the calibration of ACR / LR brought a lot to report: http://www.fors.net/chromoholics/

Nice portraits, I grip a little less on the first photo "dramatic", the use of flash to believe I found a collage.
Question nevertheless these three portraits: you used a flash or other light source deported? and what operation? (I can not see the Exif s there) thank you
July 10th, 2007 at 2:39
Thank you John! I'll take a look at the module calibration of curiosity.
Thibault,
Yep rendering is very bonding, this side was unreal looking
For the three portraits, light is a window with a Légé drain with a reflector to reduce light gaps.
I'm on the case has a 50mm 1.6 to 1 / 60.
July 10th, 2007 at 5:55
Very nice this last round,
What is the brand of your 50 mm?
Congratulations
July 10th, 2007 at 5:56
I Reposte Sorry, no edit function
What technique you use to resort the eyes of your models? is post-processing?
July 10th, 2007 at 7:22
Good evening ksh,
This is the nikkor 50mm 1.4 that I recently acquired
For the eyes I sometimes look a little thin in photoshop with a mask, in this case there is no record is located, the image out of Lightroom as

Great photos as usual. I share a bit of mixed feelings against the dramatic sky diving. Good photo but a little déjà vu
I take the discussion of f/1.4 for a quick question, AF is managed by the CO Update or case? I feel like mine (mounted on D70) focus a bit too far from the sight of focus and often devastating to fully open ... I know he must master the AF at this level, so it can be a lack of experience, or there may be a means of settling staffs focus? (Nix, I will show you how it's done for the development
))
July 11th, 2007 at 11:12
pixel,
The aim was to dive against real test openflash, I like the attitude of Thomas above and the form of clouds which are the wings, but I quite agree it's already been done and more
FY is managed by the case if you have any problems with front or back focus ca should normally appear on all your pictures (necessarily less visible on smaller openings).
One possible test, a tripod, opening 1.4, and the development of a rule and then analyzing the results
The map can also be done manually, I have a 85 1.4 AIS on which the map is always on hand (I'll grant you that the D200 viewfinder is brighter than the D70
)
July 12th, 2007 at 24:18
No beast the scope of the rule ... I test tomorrow
To map the manual, actually, with the D70's viewfinder must be a real pro! The purchase of the D200 is fast approaching ...
I see the principle for the "photo of the photographer," I was also amused with this concept and it took me five shots to find the right balance ... but the photo card ... I ca t'envoye on your mail If you're interested, my blog is not oriented photo.
Ok, I stop is the hijack comment

Hello from Tahiti!
I just discovered your site and I really congratulate you: your photos are beautiful and you approach the topics are interesting. I would!
Getting back on this note ... According to the following website http://www.pictchallenge-archives.net/TESTNUM/VariablesBXU.html , NEF files converted by Aperture seem to look better and better sharpness than those converted by Lightroom. Happy reading and see you soon!

It works the scope of the rule, and fortunately, the AF works well, but the photogrpahe was not good
) Maybe it is also because I was in AF-C, which does not seem to be a good idea with a range of focus very tight ... Thanks for the advice and soon.
July 14th, 2007 at 24:55
The AF-C is really to avoid a hand in some cases (sports, auto racing, things that move a lot
) And surout a very small openings
July 14th, 2007 at 2:38
Hey yeah. After 3 years of self-picture with my little D70, I just realize it alone
I would say again, the AF-C is almost b annir objos on non AF-S

(False handling sorry I keep my message
)
For a long time I am not come to your site, and I see that I missed a lot of things, thank you for this return to Lightroom.
For 2 years I use iView exclusively for archiving and Nicon Capture Development, LR 1.0 I tried but my PC was too slow, I recently changed config and I installed version 1.1, and like you I was amazed!
I uninstalled Nikon Capture and iView for final adoption LR, I also tested Photoshop CS3 brings real news and especially a better management of the workspace!
These two new software are a couple very powerful.
Thank you for all the info you left us, congratulations for your photos, the second with the wheat is surprising in light!
See you soon

Well the beans must qualify the

Capture One 4 will be out soon ... And normally
Lightroom is true that the interface is attractive, spectacular and everything. But it is full of defects very young, too many parameters, and very heavy on my iBook G4
I use iView and C1 with joy, it's simple and effective
I agree of course that everyone needs according to his specialty of PDV. No software is suitable for everyone.
And if not for adventurers like myself in the (very) large aperture, the design manual transaxle is highly recommended!
and fun at the shoot is incomparable
Can optionally install a split focus (focusing screen frosted) in his viewfinder. All this gives a dimension to the POS.
It is no longer trying to bring the AF motor or we would like. It IS the AF motor. More dependence on red dot, it leaves more likely to com
Wala, if Benjamin congratulations for this site that I secretly jealous, and for your work
